Ryan Tunnicliffe is the powerhouse midfielder for the Academy team, and having seen him play live, he reminded me of a Nicky Butt style player. He has a good engine, can tackle and pass, and should thrive at United as he gradually makes his way through into the Reserves. So far this season he has played every minute of the U18's fixtures and I expect him to continue at the heart of midfield.

Read through the Academy match reports, and Tunnicliffe is often mentioned for his role in United's performances.

Tunnicliffe has played every minute of the Academy's matches so far this season. Until Saturday he had played in the midfield, but moved to right back in the absence of Massacci, Thorpe, and Reece Brown.

He then played at right back for the Reserves against Hull last night. From what you know of Tunnicliffe, do you think this is another case of a player just doing a job (as Fletcher has done on occasion by moving to right back) or could his long-term future at the club be as a tough-tackling defender in the tradition of Gary Neville? When I saw him play he reminded me of a Nicky Butt type of midfielder.

I think he could turn into a bit of a utility man for us. Could potentially play center mid, right mid, right back or center back. He has the qualities to do a job in all of those positions.

His versatility will certainly give him a chance, same goes for De Laet. I think Tunnicliffe has the potential to play the way Fletcher is playing these days, they have a similar style but Ryan probably has more goals in him. Still only 16 so has 3-4 years to improve his game.

Congratulations - and happy birthday - to Reds midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe. Seventeen today, he's just signed his first professional contract. Here's to a great 2010 for Ryan and all the academy lads, including further progress in the FA Youth Cup.

Hope he makes it here, he's going the right way about it anyway. 17 now, so 3 more years of development and he should be ready for the big time.

Yeah but to do that Ole needs to put him in his proper positioning.

Whats peoples gutt feeling about this one then? Will he make it, or just get filtered out like the rest. Nicky Butt was the last english midfielder to break through. Where's Matty James, injured?

Matty James, has been out injured since he returned from Preston, no word on him yet! I think Tunnicliffe will make it, since the first time I seen him play that was my opinion, he's strong, box to box, got a good pass and can score a goal. Don't know why but kind of reminds me of Keano, I can see him been good captain material. I love seeing young lads like him making the step up, it will make him even more egar to be successful, and make the step up(y)

Maybe because you described Roy Keane! haha.

From the bits ive seen he does look quite an aggresive powerful player. Which i think fergie likes, especially in the midfield areas. I hope he makes it. Not going to be easy because Pogba will have a say, fergie apparently wanting Rodwell. I hope he takes his chance. It's an achievement in itself that he's on the trip to france in the first place.

Yeah, I really do see him as a young Keano tbh. Erm, would be a hard team selection, but a nice one.

    Maybe our midfield/forwards as this:

    Nani Tunnicliffe Pogba

    Morrison Keane Cofie

In about 3 years, or maybe next season in the Carling Cup, seriously, that line up would be dreamy. And, that's leaving out a couple of stars. The future is bright:p

Him being on the trip to France means nothing to me to be quite honest...Eirkim was on quite a few trips in Europe and never even got a game for the first team

Fergie on Tunnicliffe, Pogba and King...

"They are progressing very well. You see that young Tunnicliffe in the youth team last week, he was outstanding. Josh King has come back from... he had a sort of, not a long term injury but he was out for 4 or 5 weeks, when he got injured playing for Preston but he's now back and playing really well for the reserve team. And as we always do when young players show potential, we try to include them first of all in the first team training, which they have done along with Paul Pogba who has done very well, also he's not in the 24 (for Europe) otherwise he would have been with us in Marseilles too. But they are making great progress and they are very strong boys; quick, aggressive boys, and so they have good chances."

Even though i like reading fans views on our youngsters, but you don't get much better praise than 'Outstanding' from the big man himself. I've turned from quietly confident to excited about tunners! Can we finally get an english central midfielder through?! Come on!

Arsenal have Wilshere, Chelsea have Mceachran, it's our turn!!

To add, i think we'll know how far Tunnicliffe has progressed if he starts getting into the Premiership squads. If him and the other 2 are the real deal then we should be getting them involved all the time.

Latest under our scout's gaze is Man United'sRyan Tunnicliffe - recommended by Sky Sports reader Sam Platt.
    The scout reports...

Ryan Tunnicliffe is one of the names fast emerging as one of Sir Alex Ferguson's real hopes for the future.

The Manchester-born starlet was first spotted by United scouts at the age of nine playing locally.

During his inaugural years with United he was also spotted by England, and he made his debut for the Under-16s at just 14.

He has made excellent progress through the ranks at Carrington and was tied down to a professional deal when he turned 17.

Now little over 12 months on from signing his first deal, he is a regular in the first-team squad and was recently awarded a squad number.

But just how good a prospect is Tunnicliffe? Well he looks like he has everything in his locker to push on and make a name for himself at Old Trafford.

Like with any hard-working, tenacious midfielder that puts on the red shirt, he already be described as the next Robson, Ince or Keane - and although just 18, Tunnicliffe looks very much in that mould.

Strong in the tackle may be the first thing you notice, but Tunnicliffe is technically very, very good - which is why he has also been used in a number of different roles in United's youth system.

His passing is very good, and although he likes to keep it simple he can pick a long ball when needed as he also has a good footballing brain which means he can be dangerous going forward.

Tunnicliffe has also shown his temperament is excellent after battling back from serious injury sustained last season.

Ferguson only last month singled Tunnicliffe out as having a chance of making it, and not many could argue with him.

    The scout says...

With Paul Scholes nearing retirement, United would love another home-grown midfield general to emerge, and Tunnicliffe could be that man.

The next 12-months are likely to see him get his chance to cement his place in the first-team squad, and from there it will be with great interest to see whether he can make the big breakthrough.

    The Scout rating...

    Shooting: 6 out of 10

    Passing: 7 out of 10

    Tackling: 8 out of 10

    Heading: 7 out of 10

    Pace: 7 out of 10

    Vision: 6 out of 10

Current ability: 6 out of 10

Potential ability: 10 out of 10

    OVERALL SCOUT RATING: 58/80

    Current value: £1.5million

    Potential value: £18million

Can't argue with the passing ability.

When I saw this thread I thought he might have been on bench for today's game!

I would love to know what he likes in training... Does he go in 50/50s with the likes of Vidic, Rooney and Scholes. I hope he does.

I remember when Welbeck was the same age, Fergie didn't want to touch him until the FA Youth cup was over. Maybe United truely rate these lads (Mainly Tunnicliffe, Pogba and Morrison) and is waiting for the competition to end for them (in a nice way) to get them in squad more regularly.

On a side note, Would you pay 25m on someone like Rodwell when we have 2 promising midfielders coming through? Can all 3 make it?
