Ice man cometh: United planning £10m swoop for Sigurdsson Sir Alex Ferguson is monitoring the Icelandic international who has starred on loan with Swansea this season Manchester United are considering a stunning £10million swoop for Swansea’s on-loan Icelandic star Gylfi Sigurdsson. Sir Alex Ferguson has been monitoring the midfielder, who is enjoying an outstanding campaign at the Liberty Stadium after arriving from German club Hoffenheim in January. United assistant Mike Phelan was sent to the Reebok Stadium last week to watch Swansea, with the champions set to face Brendan Rodgers’ side next weekend. And he was accompanied by Martin Ferguson, the brother of United’s boss and the club’s chief scout. His brief was to run the rule over Sigurdsson – an Icelandic international – and he was impressed with what he saw. United are looking for midfield recruits after being forced to bring Paul Scholes out of retirement in January because of a lack of quality and injuries. Sigurdsson, a clean striker of the ball, has scored seven times in 14 appearances for the Swans. He also enjoyed a healthy strike-rate of 18 goals in 42 appearances during two years with Reading before moving to Hoffenheim for £7m in 2010. The German club value Sigurdsson at £10m – but they may look to squeeze more money out of United if the champions firm up their interest. http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport//football/transfer-news/manchester-united-planning-10m-swoop-810604
Lets not write it off, Big signings don't always equate to big success. Antonio Valencia wasn't a 'big' signing but he's arguably our best winger and definitely our best crosser. Hernandez was virtually unknown. Park has been great value. Not so much lately, but still. Even Vidic wasn 't a big name that wonders were expected of. Going further back, Solskjaer wasn't a big signing. Neither was Schmeichel. Sigurdsson might not be the most exciting signing on paper, but you just never know. He could sign and turn out to be better than many more 'prized' signings could be for the club.
A world class midfielder - who I don't know. We've got loads of good players and a few very good players. If you want to be as good as the best in the world you need special players.
Names, no point saying world class midfielders and not naming anyone. We've competed for years and at times beaten world class competition without signing world class players who are ready made.
I don't watch enough football to give you a long list, but I'm sure there is. Every time I've seen Martinez (either at CB or CM) he's looked class, there's Modric, apparently Hazard/M'Villa are pretty immense....there's great players out there but you have to be prepared to invest. We've been lucky that we've had Scholes and Giggs come through our academy that were WC players. We don't have any great up and coming midfielders (Pogba hasn't showed enough yet, nor has Cleverley) or creative attacking players. Every time I've watched Sigurdssen he's looked good, but I've never felt "wow I'd like him in our first team". Is he better than Michael Carrick? If he's not, then I fail to see the need for him. He'd be just another good player.
The lad Pineaar looks good and his overall play is improving i would take him over Carrick our World Class midfielder (my arse) any day!
I don't think we should sign just one midfielder personally. I think we need 3 players and if Sigurdsson was one of the I would have no problems whatsoever. He's dynamic, he's young and could certainly be moulded. I certainly think he could make the step up to be a very good midfielder for this club. He's twice the player Cleverley is and has even more time to improve. Hard to compare him and Carrick when they play totally different roles.
Penis is a winger. We don't need anymore of them and he's never been, or ever will be good enough for us. He's not young either. Everton is exactly his level tbh.
I've said a few times we need 2 players IMO, a defensive midfielder and a player like Silva/Nasri/Mata. To be clear I wouldn't be annoyed by his signing, but as long as he isn't the main signing. United are lacking genuine world class players. We've got more good players than any team I've ever seen.
How many genuine world class midfielders out there? Not many, and even less when you take out those we'd have no chance of signing. The players you mentioned - Martinez, Modric, Hazard, M'Vila. How many of those are world class? Modric maybe on his day. The rest have world class potential, which is different. I wouldn't even rate Goetze as world class just yet and I rate him as the best young footballer in the world. Does Sigurdsson have world class potential? Probably not, but he gets as close as you can for £10m. Just like Kagawa would be, this would be a great signing. Perhaps some need to realise buying world class players all the time isn't viable for clubs like ours. And a world class team doesn't have to be filled with world class players.
To be fair, he does have a fair bit of potential, goalscoring midfielder, who can actually pass (sorry gibson|)
