We need to name a 25 man squad, plus an unlimited number of U21 year old players (born on or after 1st July 1991). At least 8 of these 25 have to be "home grown", which means trained at English / Welsh clubs for 3 years between the ages of 16 and 21.

    UPDATED: 26th February 2013

    'Home Grown' = *
U21s (with some overage players permitted) = R
    Academy = AC2 (2nd year U18) AC1 (1st year U18)

Players are listed in their order of age, or in the case of the young players, in alphabetical order in a given birth year if their actual DOB is unknown.

    First Team Squad:

3 or more of the 'fringe' lot to leave in the summer, hopefully, need to get some of these kids cracking before they are "senior" squad members...

Gibbo, Hargo, Scholes and VDS seem to be off in the summer...

I'm still hoping Fergie can convince him to play 1 more season.

I think there are question marks over whether Kuszczak, Brown, Gibson, Hargreaves and Owen will still be at the club next season.

I agree and I have a sneaky suspicion de Laet will leave (with some sort of buy back option) for 7m.

    £7m for De Laet?

Funniest joke i've heard in a long time, we'll be lucky to get £1m for him...

I'm wondering which of this season's loanees will be at Old Trafford next season?

Tom Cleverley has to be, but then I'm wondering about Ritchie De Laet and Mame Biram Diouf? They're the important decisions because age-wise they need to be declared for the 25 man squad.

As for the others like Federico Macheda and Danny Welbeck, they're still young, and them being away on loan or at OT doesn't affect personnel decisions. In other words, keeping them at United doesn't mean they take up somebody else's place. However, in playing terms, how many of the youngsters can Fergie accomodate?

Cleverley will, De Laet possibly. How long can Brown & O'Shea be around for? We need some solid squad players and I've seen nothing of De Laet that tells me we need to get rid.

Diouf will almost certainly be gone, wouldn't mind using him as a makeweight. Macheda has to go on loan again, hopefully to a Championship side or a lower Premier Division side.

Welbeck, it's too tough to call, at times there have been hints we may sell him, others hints we will keep him, it's down to how strongly Fergie rates his chances of making it here.

Question marks are over Owen, Obertan, Diouf, Cleverley and Delaet.

I think Owen will get released. Obertan will get a loan, Diouf and Delaet be sold and Cleverley im undecided on as yet. In addition Scholes may not continue but thats his call and kuzzy will get replaced if he chooses to leave.

So taking everything what i think we should have around 2/3 free open spaces for future over 21 year old players. If we sign Rodwell he wouldnt need to be in the 25.

I don't understand criticism of De Laet. Ok he's not the finished article, but he's looked quite good from what I've seen. He's a decent, versatile defender who has a bit of height and power about him.
Playing the twins on the wing, could open a place for him to get games in the first team. I'd definitely give him a few more seasons, he could be our next O'Shea, only better.
    He looks promising anyway

    Really interesting analysis Moon.

Also for next year I think Bebe will be an U/21 for the Prem squad but not for CL as he will not have been at the club for 2 or more years, he will have only been there one year, so I think there is a chance he will either go out on loan or just not included in the CL squad.

For next year Obertan, Cleverley and Smalling become overage, but also Macheda and Welbeck will come back from loan as U/21 which is good.

You are right about the 9 guys born in 1990...really only Rafael and Fabio would be assured of staying, and with Amos in that list good young keepers suddenly become important to find...I think Sir Alex will only want 2 overage keepers, meaning there is a good chance that both van der Saar and Kuszczak will leave, with Lindegaard No 2 keeper, and the No 1 keeper to be bought this summer, and the third keeper will be Amos for 2011/2012, but the year after Amos is overage, so another great U/21 keeper will need to be found.

If United lose van der Saar, Kuszczak, Hargreaves and Owen for next year, then they are down to 24 overage players allowing them to buy a replacement no 1 goalkeeper to replace van der Saar which takes them to 25...then for every other overage player they buy, one overage player will have to be sold (or go out on loan for the season if that doesnt count in the overall overage 25 man list)...so I think a few of these overage players will have to go to make room for new signings: Brown, Gibson, De Laet, Diouf, Obertan, Cleverley, Evans, also with the nine new overage players still to come the season after...this 25 man squad rule I think will make the Championship and lower leagues stronger as Prem teams will have to keep selling players every year who arent good enough to make the 25 man squad once they reach 21.

For 2011/2012 there will be 9 U/21s becoming overage, and the seasons after that (based on the current players) its 8, then 6, then 12, then 9...so it didnt really affect United much for the 2010/2011 season, the first season the rule was in place, but in coming seasons there are going to be alot of unhappy 21 year olds cut.

Currently in the 2010/2011 squad, there are only 23 overage Prem players...but there is also De Laet and Diouf out on loan for the rest of the season, which makes 25...now with overage players out on loan for the season, do they count in the 25 overage players list? Meaning if say United have 30 overage players total next year, could they have 5 of them out on loan for the season, keeping 25 overage players eligible at the club, or does the total of overage players have to be a max of 25 INCLUDING the overage players out on loan?

Get rid of Mame Diouf, he's not worthy of being in the 25 man squad.

BUMP - I've added some of the youngsters getting in to the Academy U18 squad rotation at the end of the list of players in the OP.

Still wondering how many of the First Team will leave in the summer, and can't decide if we will have more changes if we win silverware, or if we don't win any!!

    BUMP

Joe Dudgeon left for Hull City the other day, but he was under 21 so doesn't affect the make-up of the 25 man squad.

Looking at the first 27 names in the OP, I think the highest number of departures in the summer could be 6. But I can also see two or three players staying with United, and going away on loan next year with a view to being included the following season.

That means Fergie has great scope to bring in new players this summer, regardless of whether they're over 21 or not "home grown". Could we really see United competing with City and Chelsea to tempt the biggest names? If winning the Premier League and getting to the Champions League isn't enough to bring in big names then I don't know what ...... oh wait, bloody huge wages. ;)

As soon as the transfer window opens, spot who moves for money, and who has integrity to play for the biggest club in Britain.

    25) 26 February 1989 - Gabriel Obertan (Wing)
    26) 12 August 1989 - Tom Cleverley (MF/Wing) (home grown)
    27) 22 November 1989 - Chris Smalling (CB) (home grown)

I've highlighted the players I feel are in danger of going. SAF likes Gibson and Obertan would probably get a loan spell to build his confidence. He is on fire in the reserves.

What worries me for two seasons' time is Welbeck and the Da silva twins will be over 21.
