the thing is even though de Laet is away on loan for the season, he is still a United overage player...so is it definite a club can have more than 25 overage players so long as the excess players are away on loan?

If 25 are allowed plus the guys out on loan then de Laet would be ineligible for Prem if he returned from loan early for whatever reason

last season for example United had no more than 25 overage players including the overage players on loan...I think it was 23 overage at United plus Diouf and de Laet 2 overage on loan making the total 25

Im not 100% certain of the Prem rule

for the CL A list this upcoming season 2011/2012 I think it will be 23 overage joined by u21 A list players de Gea and Jones...then all the B list under 21s added

I got the impression that you could have any number of players away on loan because what matters is that you name 25 players at your club who are over 21 in the calendar year that the season begins. I'm sure Man City loaned out many players for exactly that reason. It was just coincidence that we didn't have the exact number of overage players at the club because so many of our First Team squad are U21s.

The 25 man squad is too complicated for an old git like me...when (what date) do they announce this squad?

I dont know about Citys situation...if they had more than 25 including those away on loan then its obviously allowed

if United have 25 overage plus de Laet away on loan on Sept 1 then we will have the rule clarified for sure

if thats what ends up happening de laet would definately be ineligible for Prem if he returned from loan early...if there is a recall clause in case of a defensive crisis etc in his loan deal

also during the month of August and the month of January when squads are chopping and changing in the transfer windows...it may be possible to have more than 25 overage players, since you dont have to hand in the new 25 man Prem list until Sept 1 and then again Feb 1, but Im not totally sure

I have a feeling Sir Alex may go with 23 overage at club plus 2 overage away on loan for the Prem squad 2011/2012...it would then mean Prem u21 players de Gea and Jones join those 23 guys in the CL A list(making it 25 total) and then everyone is eligible for Prem and CL, except for u21 guys like Vermeijl who still wont qualify for CL B list as he has not been at United 2 years

if there are more than 23 overage players in Prem squad, excluding loans, then one or more overage players will not be eligible for CL(like de Laet and Hargreaves recently) because of u21s de Gea and Jones having to be named in the CL A list

I've added David De Gea to the squad list, according to his age. He won't be included in the 25 man squad as he is still under 21. If you're searching, he's #33 on the list. Excellent news! We can use as many "underage" players as we want, but must just have 25 over-21s for the season.

Wes Brown was our third-oldest player, but he's just been sold to Sunderland. Now Giggs, Ferdinand and Michael Owen are the remaining "children of the 70s".

I think this is key. The rapid departures of some of the "overage" players could be interpreted as a sign that new players are on their way in the coming days.

The second "old-timer" of the day is on his way out. John O'Shea just signed for Sunderland. After so many departures and retirements, 27 year old Darren Fletcher is now the 10th oldest player at the club.

I think to come Gibson will be sold, one other overage player will go out on loan like either Obertan or Diouf, and 2 more overage players will be signed meaning there will be 23 overage at club and 2 overage away on loan for the season making the total 25 for Prem plus all the u21s

then for CL underage players Jones and de Gea will join those 23 overage Prem players in the 25 A list, and everyone else will be eligible for CL B list apart from u21 players who have not been at the club at least 2 years like Vermeijl and Pogba

I've updated the OP. Look at the bold print at the end of each line. It shows whether players are in the USA, with the Reserves, or at the Milk Cup in Northern Ireland. Others are Injured, or away on loan, or doing their national duty (Reece Brown and Marnick Vermijl).

Why not take De Laet out of the list, since he won't be registered for the first half of the season. that way it's clearer that there are two free spots on the 25-man team.

Compromise? I've kept him in the list but just removed his number in the order of players' ages.
