Hi Nick, long time no see. I've put the photograph under my nuclear-powered magnifying glass. I think you're right that it's not Danny O'Brien front left. It's Ryan Shields. It's goalie Elliot Chadderton between Wilkinson and Pritchard on the back row, if you say that front right is O'Brien. Ben Barber is 100% back left.

That's then confused the hell out of me about Louis Rowley. It only leaves the big blond lad in the middle row and I don't think that's Louis.

I'm also prepared to buy your theory that Gorré and Kebbie are the wrong way round! I am pro-pedantic!

so United should announce their 25 man overage Prem squad plus u21 list tomorrow or Friday maybe with some extra squad numbers given out to u21s who didnt previously have one

the CL 25 man overage A list plus B list of u21s who have been at United at least 2 years should be released by United and listed on the uefa cl site under headings: [teams - Man utd - squad] maybe on Friday, or next Monday or Tuesday...from memory the CL lists are announced at least a day or two after the Prem list

I wouldnt be surprised to see more United players go out on loan either later today or from Sept 8 onwards -
from wikipedia...In England, clubs from the Football League Championship to the Football Conference can loan in players from 8 September to 25 November and also from 8 February until 24 March. An existing loan deal can be made permanent at any time outside the transfer window

for the United 25 man squad for 2012-2013 there are currently 30 overage players as it stands right now factoring in 7 current u21 players being overage 12 months from now plus the current 23 overage players at club and away on loan combined...so again United will say goodbye to quite a few more players in the summer 2012 window...if 6 of those players go in the next 12 months that brings it to 24 which would also leave a CL A list spot for the u21 Jones(who wouldnt qualify for B list)...if 7 of those players leave then they can sign one new overage player for 2012-2013, or 8 and 2 or 9 and 3 etc...I wonder if all of these players will be gone in the next twelve months: Gibson, Kuszczak, Amos, de Laet, Diouf, Bebe, Drinkwater, Owen, Giggs...that would leave room for Jones to be in CL A list plus up to three new overage signings

I've updated the OP. The 34 Champions League squad names are all underlined. All 22 of our over-21 year old players are named. Only Ritchie De Laet isn't on the list due to being away on loan at Norwich.

For the young players, De Gea and Jones are named on the A list, while the other 10 under-21s are named on the B list. Don't ask me to explain the point of that.

What surprised me was seeing Sean McGinty's name and new shirt number (44). He's a centre back who's doing for the Reserves what Chris Smalling is currently doing for the First Team - namely playing at full back instead of in the middle. Sean is in theory now a back-up to Evra and Fabio for the #3 slot.

Nice to see Davide Petrucci named in the squad numbers. The names I think are conspicuous by their absence are Marnick Vermijl (an attacking right back), Ravel Morrison, and Paul Pogba. Those omissions are odd considering midfielder, Matt James, does make the list, despite not playing for ages due to apparent injury problems.

However, this article states that "others eligible for this list can be added up to 24 hours before a fixture". So perhaps they will get a go at some point.

All the young players away on loan aren't named in the list. I'm thinking Drinkwater, Norwood, Wootton, Reece Brown, Brady, King, Tunnicliffe, or the currently-injured Bébé.

With the close of the transfer window, the 20 EPL clubs have submitted their squad lists and it is interesting to see how Sir Alex is building for the future. Fergie has only had to submit the names of 22 senior players – those who were 21 or older on the 1st of January 2011.



Assuming that Ben Amos, Rafael, Fabio, David De Gea and Danny Welbeck will still be at the club next season, all 5 of them will need to be registered, but Sir Alex will only need to create 2 spots for them on the squad list. This could quite easily be accomplished with the probable retirement of Ryan Giggs and the probable sale of Tomasz Kuszczak. Four of the above-mentioned youngsters will be considered Home-Grown.


In order to purchase further senior players, Sir Alex would have to free up additional spaces, but the uncertain futures of Darron Gibson, Michael Owen, Mame Biram Diouf and Dimitar Berbatov might help him to solve that quandary.


Another interesting point to note is that beside David De Gea and Marnick Vermijl, all players at Manchester United who are under the age of 21, will be able to fulfill the Home-Grown status requirement of being registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the Season during which he turns 21). This is, of course, assuming that the players will play for United until they are 21 or loaned out to clubs who are registered with the FA or the FA of Wales.


With the likes of Pogba, Morrison, Tunnicliffe and Thorpe tipped to make the step up to the first team in the future, this would mean that United potentially have a steady supply of home-grown talent streaming into the first team.
Finally, I also would like to point out that it’s quite amazing that Phil Jones will not need to be registered as part of the 25-man squad until the start of the 2014/15 season!

Me neither until I updated the list today. You can see that Sir Alex had planned well ahead to accommodate the HG rule.
Top English players command top dollar, so it's great that United will have HG players who add quality and are not just there to add numbers.

Very well planned. This suits us though, the likes of City, Chelsea etc are really going to struggle for balance, something we seem to have sewn up.
It'd be really interesting to see every squad laid out like this. (not that I'm asking you to do that! )

yeah Im also surprised Vermeijl didnt get a squad number...with the 22 overage plus u21s Jones and de Gea making the 24 man CL A list there was a spot open for U21 Vermeijl too in the A list...all three of those guys dont qualify for B list because they havent been at the club 2 years...Pogba and Morrison were eligible for the B list and were the only 2 guys not away on loan with a squad number that were left off the CL squad...Pogba and Morrison could be added to the B list at any time so long as it is 24 hours before kick off of a CL match, but a guy like Vermeijl cannot be added to the A list(despite one spot being open) because the deadline has passed

I believe up to 3 changes can be made to the CL A list in the January window...and during January teams in Prem can have unlimited changes to their 25 man squad before the list is submitted Feb 1

Any overage player not named in the 25 man squad is only eligible to play Carling Cup games until Jan 1 when the new window opens...any team with less than 24 overage in Prem squad can use u21s as part of it if needed for homegrown rule purposes...Clubs with fewer than 25 players in their squad are still permitted to sign free agents(not the case for CL A list outside the window apart from an emergency goalkeeper if there was a goalkeeping injury crisis)

I hope to see Pogba and Morrison get a CL spot at some point, and also Vermeijl getting a Prem/FA Cup/Carling Cup squad number would be good, likely for a Carling Cup game where Fergie normally hands out a new squad number or two in some of the early rounds...with Reece Brown only out on loan until Sept 15 I thought he would have got a squad number too, so this may be an indication that his loan may be extended

I still havent seen the full list of u21s who were registered in the Man Utd Prem squad...the only official Prem squad list I have seen is for the 22 overage guys

so excluding the guys out on loan its pretty much a first team squad of 28 main guys plus the 6 extra CL spots making 34 for CL squad, plus Pogba and Morrison making the Prem squad 36(the amount of players with a squad number not out on loan)

so there are now 42 United players with a squad number(36 at club and 6 on loan)...the eight squad numbers not used are: 2, 22, 26, 31, 35, 36, 38, 39...with maybe a few young players possibly getting handed one of those numbers at some point during the season

I originally thought Pogba joined July 2009 but apparantly it was Oct 2009, so Fergie could add him to the CL B list in Oct so he can be eligible for match day 3, 4, 5 and 6 and the rest of the CL matches but for group matches 1 and 2 wont be eligible

also with only 24 spots in the A list used Fergie could have put him in the A list if he wanted to but chose not to

Honestly, will get 16 points from this group at least and there will be good opportunities to play Pogba and Morrison in the last 15 - 20 minutes of games vs Basel and Otelul Galati..

the Johnstone one month loan with option to extend means while he is away on loan there will be 35 players at United with a squad number not away on loan...and 7 with a squad number away on loan along with 4 others without a squad number away on loan(11 on loan total)

of those 35, the CL squad will be 33 strong whilst Johnstone is away

From Sept 8 onwards it will be interesting to see if there are more loan moves to L1, L2 or Championship from United

The OP is up-to-date with all the Leeds squad highlighted in red. 11 of the 18 are U21 year olds. But with the exception of Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra, 5 of the club's oldest 7 players are involved too.

I've just been scanning through the players currently on our books. Broadly speaking you can divide United's talents in to four separate 'squads' of 25. The First Team is 'fluid' because players come up from the Reserves or split time between the sides (like Macheda). The U18s are a coherent 25 who have been named as such.

However, I'm taking artistic license with the Reserves because either in January, or when the season is over, I expect to see another mini 'cull'. Obvious names waiting by the exit door are Tomasz Kuszczak and Darron Gibson, but sadly I also think that Oliver Norwood and Danny Drinkwater will have to move to new clubs if they're to find first team football. Similarly I'm not convinced that Luke Giverin will stay at the club, or that Rafael Leao's loan period will be turned in to a permanent deal. His Brazilian compatriot, Gladstony, isn't somebody we know much about because he's bypassed United to spend a year on loan at Twente. I'm not including him on this list for now. But I do include the various players away on loan who I consider to have a future at Old Trafford, such as Ryan Tunnicliffe, Robbie Brady, Ritchie De Laet, and Josh King.

Incredible mate .... but do you still feel Ritchie De Laet has a future at UTD???

I'd like to think that he does. He can play either fullback position, and centre back. I guess it all comes down to how he does at Norwich. He started well (ish!) but has now dropped to their bench for the past couple of matches. It's a long season so I'm sure he'll play plenty. He's only turning 23 this November, so we're hardly talking 'old man' status.

What is against him is the progress of Zeki Fryers, Sean McGinty, Tom Thorpe, Scott Wootton (on loan at Peterborough right now), Michael Keane, Reece Brown, and of course, the youth of Smalling, Jones, the Da Silvas, and Jonny Evans. Despite all the worry about letting Wes Brown and John O'Shea leave, and the retirement of Gary Neville, we have a lot of capable defenders at the club.
