Not a knee-jerk thread as we all know we have been outpassed and outplayed (again) but just being curious. What do you think was on Fergie's mind??

Making no changes to personnel or tactics for a long long while (right through the interval) when we needed even more goals and big improvements after conceding the first and when we do, we brought in a 18-year-old youngster midfielder (forget about Rio's substitution as he seemed injured) and Welbeck, a striker, only came in after the game is practically sewn up with their second.

Not as serious as he claimed we wanted to win the Europa? Gave up the game? Or already knew we were just not good enough for Europe?

Perplexing especially when he tried to play his best selection minus the debatable Park only from the start.

    Shoot....

Leaves Pogba on bench - criticised for not giving youngsters chances

Puts on Pogba - perplexing decision!

i reckon he was just dumbfounded... and maybe a little clueless (not in a bad way)

bilbao over the last two legs, and i have no problem saying this, would have beaten ANYBODY (and yes that includes...)

problems to fix... he'll sought it out

Now don't be silly. Not when we attempted to play our best from the start and thus seemingly trying to win the tie.

Edit: So he gave up the game?!

when we play w*nk against a team thats w*nk... then i get angry

but tonight was a completely different scenario... they were nearly as good as ive ever seen anyone, over both legs, so no real shame in that

Pogba was probably our man of the match even tho he's played 20 minutes lulz.

He can't do anything when he's best players are misfiring/injured. Rooney was so fukin awful it's ridiculous. I don't care about that goal, my little sister has better ball control than him. Despite His goals, his overall play has been very average this year. Miss the player we had in the last months of last season

I did not even lament we are out (since I prefer bread and butter) but I am more interested in what could be on Fergie's mind.

The team just isn't ready to compete in my opinion. Best thing that will happen to us is we will take our time and rebuild and come back in 3 years time and start to be up there with Barca and Madrid again, where we rightfully belong.

Two huge assumptions there. City have won every home game this season and we've been outplayed against Ajax, Bilbao x2, Norwich and Spurs.

Agree with this, phenomenal little team. Munain is immense, Llorente is excellent, and Iraola's skill... I mean, if he had scored that goal it would have been one of the goals of the decade. And that's their right back.

What was that stat Collymore was talking about, they ran more than any team has at Old Trafford in the last ten years?

We were deservedly beaten. Most of those players will be snapped up by a 'bigger' club. United are in transition now, and have to change a lot of things in the summer to start again.

Man City will not be as hard as this.

I agree they were good. But still they are only 5th from Spain. It was not impossible to win against them. And thats what depresses me the most.... we threw it away. We did not really try.

Outclassed home and away in the Europa League, that's the long and the short of it. 5-3 aggregate flattered United hugely; it could easily have been ten. Perhaps the players weren't sufficiently motivated for Europe's secondary competition, and perhaps Bilboa upped their game for the tie, but whatever the reasons, it's unacceptable for a club that has set its standards so much higher in the past twenty years. I'm not going to panic and say it signifies a long term decline in United's stature, but nor will pretend it isn't a worry. We need an injection of creative quality in the summer in addition to at least one full back. Manchester United being passed off the pitch in the last sixteen of the Europa League cannot be permitted. Really angry just now. Full credit to Bilboa who were miles better in both legs, and I wish them well for the rest of the competition.

I thought Fergie was clueless or had no intention of winning. As good as they were we made it easy for them.

Someone moaned at me giving Fergie grief the other day but what else can you say?

Too much tinkering, not enough desire. Get a set team and stick with it ffs.

I can't agree. Last sixteen of the Europa League - to be so thoroughly horsed is shameful, regardless of how well Bilbao played. Our standards are higher than accepting such performances. Bilbao are seventh in La Liga with only a slim chance of playing in the Champions League next season. They aren't world beaters, despite their fantastic performances in the two legs. We have to be miles better than we showed in this tie.

If that is true thats just shameful for a club like Man United.

even if he´s mainly thinking of the League.... we´ve not won it yet. And I can see us ending the season without any trophy. Its not that our performances in the league are so sensational there. The reason why we´re on top now is more because of City struggling....
