Man Utd are bigger than Man City ever will be

posted on 22/07/09

My recent trip to Malaysia to watch Manchester United’s pre-season friendly against a Malaysian XI highlighted why this club is so great and why Man City are decades away from usurping Manchester United – and there is only a small, tiny, improbable chance of that happening.

Arriving at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Friday morning, my mates and I bumped into fellow reds, who promptly redirected us to the Bunga Raya VIP complex. There we met Man Utd fans from all over Asia: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, India and Vietnam.

Fans of all ages and backgrounds were there to greet our heroes. Some waited for hours just to get a glimpse of their heroes. Luckily for me, we were late and so only had to wait a short while before seeing Giggsy and co.

How many fans would turn up to greet Man City at an airport in Asia?

Does Man City even have an Asian fan cub outside of Thailand?

Bukit Jalil

The next stop was to book in at our hotel and rest before heading for the training session that afternoon. I was secretly harbouring hopes of getting close to the players to collect autographs and maybe even take photos, but all that was dashed when we arrived at Bukit Jalil stadium. An estimated 40,000 people showed up just to watch the reds train!

How many people would turn up to watch a Man City training session?!

The next day, a whopping 100,000 people showed up to see their heroes in action!

As former British colonies, there are really only two teams that matter in Malaysia and Singapore – Manchester United and Liverpool. The same pretty much applies for most of Asia.

Bitter rival fans simply cannot comprehend how deeply the love for these two clubs runs in the veins of Asian fans.

This kind of passion is built up over decades.

Fans from all over the world have been taking Manchester United to their hearts for decades. They have done so because of the swashbuckling football, because of the heroic players, because of Sir Matt Busby’s ability to the nightmare of Munich into the fairytale of Wembley and because of all the amazing moments in the Theatre of Dreams.

Modern day rivals like Chelsea and now Man City still have to earn that right. That honour of being truly established in the hearts of fans around the world.

United has a rich history of iconic players like Best, Law, Charlton, Whiteside, Robson, Bruce, Keane, Cantona, Giggs, Scholes, Beckham and more recently Rooney as well as Ronaldo.

Who do Chelsea or City have?

Even if Man City have the financial clout to buy a star-studded squad like The Galacticos, it doesn’t guarantee success and it doesn’t guarantee a loyal GLOBAL fan base like United has, because United earned that fan base with its history, legendary players, attacking football and yes, clever marketing. But unlike Chelsea and now Man City, United were not bank-rolled. No, United enjoyed the fruits of their own labour and foresight.

I do not begrudge Man City fans the right to be positive about the future and I do think it’s reasonable to say that they will be challenging for honours soon, but what I take exception to is the exaggerated statements about Man City nearly being a bigger club than Manchester United.

Boys…. You are decades away from even getting close to Manchester United United!

Man City supporters are simply kidding themselves if they think they are going to magically become bigger than United or even a top four club overnight.

When Abaramovich took over at Chelsea, the rest of the big four were not equipped to handle the squad, which he amassed and Mourinho’s ability to manage it.

It is a different situation now and even Everton with their limited resources have a team full of players, who want to play for Everton, which makes a difference when the going gets tough.

Man City will do well to get into the top 6 this coming season and they might well challenge for honours in the near future, but please, please spare me the nonsense that you are a bigger club than Man United.

You are decades away from usurping us – and there is a very slim chance of that happening.

You do not have the players, nor do you play the kind of football that captures people’s imaginations and most of all, you cannot buy class or an identity.

The little shred of identity that Manchester City had went out the window when you decided to bend over and remain silent when Thaksin bought your club and then sold it to the Arabs.

Who are the real glory hunters?

Contrary to popular belief Manchester United built their success on good policies and good management. Man City spent £180million more than United and still were a mid-table club last season.

You can buy mercenaries, but you cannot buy class.

Decades, boys. Decades….

  6. Why do you even need to remind yourselves of this?

Why are you bothered what ‘ickle Citeh’ are doing?

Could you imagine fans of Barcalona jumping up and down like a spoilt brat who wants some sweets, screaming ‘we are bigger than them, WE ARE, WE ARE, WE ARE!?!’

No-one’s saying you’re not, pal. You’re one of the, say, five biggest clubs in the world. We’ve won sod all in years. Why are you even arsed?

  7. Man Utd may be bigger but why are you so concerned, City will take years to build up a fan base like yours, we are not concerned about that at present but winning trophies, this will dillute your fan base and your debt will slowly dictate who you can buy!

  11. i am a city fan, a frustrated one at that and i would say that we are 20 years behind united as they have achieved incredible success. Now city have some finance to bring in new players and move the club in the right direction, we can start to claw back united and maybe when my son is older, be where united are now.
good report, i enjoyed reading it.

  12. are you drunk, city never spent £180million last year unless you count the cost of buying the club, as for the take over of chelsea. Chelsea were already a top four club when they got there money. typical united fan “knows nothing about anything except united”

  14. What is so amusing about all of this is the sheer number of “City will never be…” and “We arent worried by City because..” stories that are coming out. If thats the case then act like it instead of getting in a flap.

Oh and of course Owen the scouse flop of 3 months ago is now the worlds best player and conversely Tevez is rubbish. How did the song go

” Fergie Sign him up, Fergie Fergie sign him up!!!” Brilliant.

  19. It amazes me how you reds continually keep saying we are a little team and will never achieve your greatness, but even more so since we were taken over.
My point being, if you aren’t at the back of your mind a little worried, then why keep bringing it up?

City and their fans have never said we will overcome Utd, or any of the other Sky four this season, so why keep sprouting tripe.
The Owner, chairman and manager have all stated that a top six finish is the target for the coming season, which given the outlay on players, is a worthy target.

Yes you have the fanbase all over the world and lots of people came to watch your team train, yawn!

City have a long term plan, to be challenging for honours over the coming years and many years after that hopefully, is it wrong to aspire to greatness?

You’re also obviously showing your complete bias, when stating we have no class, history, or great players past and present. I’ve always held Utd and their history of great success and players in high regard, but everything you see is obviously only red, some goldfish bowl that.

We might be decades away, a decade away, a few years away, but the competition makes it more healthy and dare I say it, yes I dare, “FUN!”

As a parting shot, we bent over for Shaksin and then the arabs did we and remained silent? I’m guessing we should have refused the arabs, their plans to buy and extend the ground, the wiping out of the debts, all current player purchases and wages are a gift and not going on the books? Their deep felt sense of community and the extensive work they are doing towards that, their pragmatism, their sense of right and shrewd business sense.

OK, let’s say you’re right and we shouldn’t have bent over, remind me why FC United came about then please?

No Ronaldo or Tevez will definitley take its toll and no sensible City fan would expect it to happen overnight, but beware !. 23. You are right that City will not be a bigger club than United and that is ok. Having been a loyal City fan since 1972 I just want to see a City side that can break into top 4 and stay there for the comming years. I think we deserve that. United got their history so why do you need to compare ?

We have a load of fans from all over the world who, even though Manchester United has nothing at all to do with them, still say they are United fans because they are attracted by glory and think it makes them more popular.

So they can spend as much as they like buy they will never close the gap. It’s about respect and earning it the right way.

  29. Utd spent the best part of 15m in the summer of 1989 on players like Pallister, Ince and Webb despite not having won the league for over twenty odd years, and 3 years into Ferguson’s trophyless tenure. Relatively speaking that was atronomical money and 3 or 4 years later the spending paidoff when utd won ther first league in 26 yrs. United have blown teams out of the water with their spending for 20 odd years now and especially snce becoming a PLC. Veron, Ferdinand, Rooney, Carrick, Hargreaves, Forlan, Poborski etc etc would come to the better part of £150m alone. In about 1994 utd spent 7/8 million on Andy Cole – how many other teams could have paid that…none is the answer, especially in England.

Much of utd’s support came due to the Muncih Air Disaster. In the 60 odd years of utd’s history preceding Munich only once did utd average the highest in the country…once in 60 odd years!

And I don’t agree about City not playing good football. Manchester City have always played football in the right manner, and last season were the Premiership’s mavericks being one of the highest scorers and letting quite a lot in. Players like Robinho, Elano, Ireland etc are pure footballers and we’re arguably the best team to watch in the Prem, becuase our games are so open…it’s great for the neutral.

Just for the record when Jihai Sun played for City fom 2002-2008 (
incidentally he was China’s captain and the first Chinese player to score in the Premier League) there were reports of billions (yes billions, not millions) watching our games in China each week. It’s fair to say we must as a consequence have a fair following in China since their idol played for us for 6 years.

  31. So what? As a blue we strive and long for success. Not to sell out some ground in Malaysia. 40000+ blues in Eastlands is fine for us. May be United could relocate to Malaysia? Bye then.

    Graham Jul 22nd, 2009 -
  32. Well may you gloat; just remember the old proverb “What comes round, goes round”. You were a skint, ragged-arsed laughing stock in the 1920s and you may well be again. You were boracic, too, in 1945 after the bombing of your ground and if we had not, out of the kindness of our hearts, lent you ours you would probably have gone under or crawled back to the obscurity of Newton Heath from whence you came.
You rose to global fame on a tidal wave of sympathy after the awful Munich disaster (and before you start to make indignant noises, I lost a relative and 4 good friends in the crash) which your PR men greedily milked.
You are clearly too young to remember crap footballers like Peter Davenport and Gary Birtles. It wasn’t always Charlton, Law and Best, you know.
Nor are you ‘the greatest club in the world’, ‘the oldest’ or the one with most ‘history’. Those laurels rest elsewhere. I’ll concede you may have the biggest global support but what did that ever mean?
I suspect the ludicrously hysterical tone of your article conceals a deep anxiety that City, traditionally always ‘Manchester’s team’ and now with good management and sufficient funding are about to join your cosy cabal. Let’s wait and see, shall we?

    Mick Travis Jul 22nd, 2009 -
  33. I’m a city fan and fair play I think your right in many ways. However I think you should replace decades with years. The thing is when you have all the money in the world does selling shirts in Asia really count for anything?

    Chris Jul 22nd, 2009 -
  34. Take two teams one red one blue and step back 35 years. The red team were playing in the old division two, the blue team were in the top flight challenging for the league title. Reluctantly I will accept the red club was slightly bigger but there was not much in it.

The next 15 years was not a successful time for either club or football in general, however several events came together at the beginning of the 1990s that would change the football world.

In 1990 Sky TV was born injecting huge amounts of cash into football and sending live football around the world

1992 saw the creation of the premiere league and the money that generated

1992 also saw the creation of the Champions league injecting he amounts of cash into clubs luckily enough to be in it..

So which club just happened to be doing well and benefit from all this extra cash and exposure? Yes it was Manchester United who just happened to be top dog when huge amounts of cash starting pouring into the club that won the Premiere League who then automatically went into the cash cow called Champions League receiving even more money and whilst all this was happening the pictures were beamed around the world as well as the UK live for the first time for all to see.

Which club were all these glory seeking fans going to support Man City who were having a bad time? Liverpool easily a more successful club than United, but not winning anything at the time of the football explosion?

Yes that’s right they supported Manchester United and the cash kept coming in allowing United to buy success when it may well have naturally faded.

Jumping back to 2009 what is the point of asking stupid questions like would 40,000 people turn up to ask City train. No of coarse not we have not had the money or the exposure United have had for the last 20 years. It took United decades and it will take City decades but things change.

If I were the author of this article I would be worry about how United are going to service their massive debt, there will be no Real Madrid type bailouts for United. If you have ever read a serious report on United’s debt you will know the Ronaldo money is going to pay a 100 million one off payment required by the banks and that there is another 100 million payment due in 18 months. Where is that money coming from and with Liverpool Chelsea Arsenal, City. Portsmouth all pushing for the top four just how will United pay their bills if they end up fifth? Ah but you are young and think football only started in 1990 and United could never finish the season outside the top four.

    Russ Jul 22nd, 2009 -
  35. We’ve ruffled a few feathers and will continue to do so.
This article confirms this. Man United fans have been living in their own little bubble for so long now. I think it might just be about to burst.

  36. What gives you the right to take exception to anything we say? They’re our opinions only as you’re sycophantic ramblings are yours. To true City supporters we’ve always been, are now, an’ always will be a bigger an’ better club than United. Just because United were the first club to milk the far east market they will always be followed by the locals – who else have they got? United’s fanbase is built on success an’ that won’t last forever. We’ll see how loyal they are when things turn pear-shaped in the near future an’ the trophy haul starts dryin’ up. The facts remain: there’s geographically only one team in Manhester an’ Liverpool are still the most successful team in the country. CTID

  39. Oh my God, these countless comments from these deluded and immature City fans are hilarious!

Their posts are dripping in irony and pathetic jealousy.

    1. They say that we care too much to be making a blog about City – well, aren’t they the ones who have come onto a Manchester United forum, and onto a United blog, to read about what we’re saying? Shows they obviously care a lot about us!

    2. They say we’ve been constantly spending money – spending money is all you lot are going to do from now on, it’s your only way to get anything close to a decent team, otherwise no player in their right mind would want to go to a mid-table at best team with no chance of winning any trophies

    3. They say we all rated Tevez and now are pretending we don’t want him – Tevez may have been popular with a lot of United fans, but the more observant of us realised he’d only scored a pathetic 5 goals in 29 appearances and was nowhere near worth the money we’d have to spend. His work rate didn’t make up for a lack of real quality and a poor first touch.

    4. They say we’re worried – City spent hundreds of millions last season and were in the relegation places at Christmas and finished mid-table and a staggering 40 POINTS behind us whilst we won the hardest league in Europe for a third time in a row and got to a second successive Champions League final, a competition City aren’t even close to

    5. They say the blue moon is rising, the United bubble is bursting – talk is cheap. City haven’t won a single trophy in over 3 decades. They’re still nowhere near the Champions League. They’ve got lots of strikers but their midfield and defence is still nowhere near as good as the teams in the top 4, and it won’t be good enough to dislodge the top teams

Manchester United are the champions, we’re the most famous and widely-supported club in the world. I doubt most people in other countries have even heard of Manchester City, ‘Manchester’ is associated with United, and always has been. City win nothing year in year out and don’t play on the highest stage.

City are rich, but they are still a mid-table team who the best players don’t want to go to for even the most astronomical wages imaginable because they want to play in Europe and challenge for trophies.

With regards to City’s wealth, I think a quote from President Obama would go well here; you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig.

  40. just like to point out one of your iconic players….LAW who was also a city player which im guessing you didnt know

    blueme Jul 23rd, 2009 -
  41. Denis Law made his mark on the game and became European footballer of the year while playing for Manchester United NOT City.

The population of China is 1.3 billion. A big chunk of which (53%) does not have access to televisions. of the remaining only a percentage would have watched Sun Ji Hai, so the assertion that BILLIONS tuned in to watch Man City, is yet another exaggerated ill-informed comment by Man City supporters.

Most fans in South East Asia follow United because of the attacking football and the players NOT the achievement. If that were true, why doesn’t the fan base shrink during barren years?!?!

The most successful team in England is Manchester United. Not Liverpool.
Liverpool have won more European honours, but Man Utd are now more successful in English football.

The sentence about 180million didn’t come out right.
Go to a website that specializes in transfer. Compare man utd’s spending versus city since 2005. then include the sales of players and you will see that Man City have spent 180 million more than Man Utd.
You can keep using money as an excuse, but the truth – like with Liverpool- is that your underachievement was/is a result of inadequate management.

The article was a reaction to exaggerated – almost ridiculous – claims on various internet forums.

    bob Aug 18th, 2009 -
  45. So, i took the patience of reading all the 44 posts above me & decided to comment too…..
first of all, let me make it clear that im a true red devil n that my loyalty does not stem out of the trophies that they have won, rather the players and values that they follow. most of united’s legends are home-grown players, (Giggs, Neville, Scholes, Beckham, Best, etc.) not the product of insane amounts of money thrown by arabs, asian or american billionaires. if you have a look at the 1999 treble-winning side, there were many players who had come through the youth-ranks of United (phil, gary neville, beckham, giggs, scholes, brown, etc.)
rather than from the money of foreign “investors”.

While utd may hav spent money on certain players, it is a reality of the game today and i firmly believe that if Madrid can do it, i have no problem with city doing it as long as it is fair play, which in the case of Lescott and Terry was not. Even Robinho joining City for anything other than money is hard to believe.

while money can buy most things in life, one must realise the example of Leeds and Madrid. Leeds showed that despite big spending, if u don’t play well as a team and don’t win trophies, u are never too good to go down and City will fail big tym if they ignore dis (n ten strikers in one team is certainly a case in this point). Madrid also bought big stars like Beckham, Ronaldo, Zidane, Figo but never concentrated on the hardworking players and ignored their importance. Result: Madrid never won anything for 4 years!!!!!

my belief is that while they have spent big and are well within their right to do so, the fact remains that they still have a long way to go and unfortunately, if their owner does not realise this and eventually gets bored and decides to move on sooner rather than later, they will be in DEEP, DEEP SHIT!!!!!!!!! so while United have no worries as relates to the financial status (we gota big sum 4 Ronaldo which we can use to repay our debts) City too hav no real concerns as long as they can keep their Arab sugar daddy interested and optimistic abt the club’s long-term future.

    TILL THEN………GLORY, GLORY MAN UNITED!!!!!!!!!!!

    RS1999 Aug 19th, 2009 -
  46. It’s not nice to gloat, but I still love doing it when Manchester United have put noisy City fans back in their place.

    As Salford Red put it:

    1. MANCHESTER IS RED !!!
Always has been, always will be.

    2. My old man said be a City fan.
He got my reply and i knew i was right.

    3. City will always be in our shadow.
Well not so much of a shadow now, more like a black hole they disappeared into.

    4. United fans now have to learn a new song for the 28th Feb.

In 76, oh this is true
a trophy was won by a team in blue,
    it’s been a long time,
    since that day,
so we’ll sing ‘em a song that they ********in’ hate…
    34 years(******** all)
    34 years(******** all)
    34 years(******** all)
    34 years(******** all)
    34 years(******** all)
    34 years(******** all)

Don’t know how we’ll all be able to remember the number 34 though.
We’ll all have to start practicing from today.

    5. Whatever City do……United do 100 times better. (just for you Tevez, love from Rio)

    Manchester is Red!
