Michael Owen – Is he worth the gamble?

posted on 03/07/09

Many of our fans, me included, are quite baffled by the way we’ve moved in for Michael Owen. He’s an injury prone, ex-Liverpool player who is way past his best. It makes no sense when you look at it that simply.

If you analyze it further however, you can see there are plus sides to the deal.

Michael Owen - Our new fox in the box?

Michael Owen - Our new fox in the box?

Owen will reportedly sign a pay as you play deal, meaning that if indeed he does get injured again, he won’t be getting paid and we won’t be wasting our money on him to sit in the treatment room with Hargreaves.

It’s in his best interests to stay fit and keep playing. The World Cup is next year and United represent his best chance of getting into the England squad and having one last hoorah for the national team.

There’s no doubting the man’s talent. If we create chances in the right areas he’ll put the ball in the net, of that I have no doubt.

The clincher is the fact that I trust Sir Alex implicitly. If he thinks it’s a good deal then I’ll blindly follow and have faith until we can see the results. Good or bad.

No manager is immune from mistakes, but after 23 years of trophy laden seasons I think he’s earned the right to a bit of lee way in the transfer market.

This is one gamble that is relatively risk free.

sums my view on the matter up perfectly.

  2. The man scores goals and that’s what we need. He has a proven track record and I think he is worth a punt. Even in his injury ravaged Newcastle career he still managed to score 30 goals in 79 games. A lot of those injuries were unfortunate as well. If he can keep relatively fit and play 25-30 games a season then I think he can be a huge success.

Fergie will use him sparingly like Nev/Scholes/Giggs so this could actually work. The fact we are getting him on a free is the clincher for me. What have we got to lose? If he is a crock then we can use Macheda and Welbeck as back up. If he turns out to be great then all is well. It’s a win win situation.

I think we need to get him on a pay as you play contract and this could be one fantastic little signing. Fergie has never been scared to take a gamble, but this is a calculated gamble with very little risk attached.

Still not sure how I’d feel to see him in a United shirt but once he starts bagging the goals it will all be ok :)

  4. I really don’t want to question Fergie’s judgement, yet I’m still clouded with doubt. We’ll all have to wait and see then. :)

  5. I think that sir alex didn’t want the same situation as last year when he had tevez . He just didn’t understand what squad rotation is. So spending £30m+ on a big name is out the window. He could have bought an unknown young striker, ( but we already have macheda & welbeck). So that leaves an experienced finisher at a good price that we need. Owen fits the bill perfectly, cause he is very intelligent & respects sir alex & will know that the gaffer knows best for him. If that means sitting on the bench sometimes he will understand, cause he will play 30-35 games this season if he stays injury-free.

Overall, a great person to have around the training ground, & will enhance more team spirit in the squad, that i feel certain players lacked last season but they have moved on.

  6. we hold all the aces in this deal……………. if we can get him anywhere near fit he will be a major bonus.

we will have him on a contract that is heavily weighted in ou favour and owen is in the same situation at becks found himself in- he’s at a crossroads, he is desperate to get into the england swuad again and maybe pick up another couple of medals.

owen is loaded and more than set up for the future so with the incentive of bnus payments added into his contract we are in a great position……we will have a player who could still be great fairly cheaply if he fails, yet if he is a success both he and the club will benefit and not just in monetary terms.

bring him on-the guy still has something left to give….those who have written him of totally are ignorant of football beyond belief.

  7. I dunno if it’s risk free, what if this stops us from buying a permanent striker, which is what we need? I feel this is something of a panic buy, and that we need to invest for the future by buying players on long-term deals. It’s probably only going to be for one season, and we had enough trouble with short-term deals with Tevez.

  8. I take my hat off to our manager, this is a worthwhile gamble on a proven goal-scorer. If he could do a Roque Santa Cruz, then we’ll have a hell of a player on our hands who has a few good yrs left in him.. VIVA Senior Owennn!!!.. And A proven English goal-scorer is always welcome here. He’s got a good morale..

His problem recently has been the shit clubs he’s been at and their shit training practices for a player of such prestige. not to mention he likes horses.. Well done Sir Alex :) .

  9. “desperation “. This is the first time i have ever doubted fergie. First of all he played for the enemy, he’s lost any pace he had and most important he will be constantly injured.

CONFIRMED - United sign Owen! | Manchester United Blog - Man Utd Talk Jul 3rd, 2009 -
  11. Man Utd isn’t spending a dime on the transfer fee, All they have to do is pay his salary.
If he fails, so what!(Which I really doubt). It could be him failing ,or a 20 million pound investment, for example.
Over all, I think he’ll have a second life with Man Utd He proved to be word class goalscorer, so why not now!

  12. you look he left liverpool to real madrid for success tat yr liverpool won the champions league :( and at real he was a bench warmer, then he went to newcastle made 76 app and scred 21 goals and hes injury prone, and to bring valencia in to replace ronaldo this is the fall down of utd :( devasted at wat is goin on at ot we have no team to retain title r european football

  13. Firstly im a Liverpool fan ( call me all u want) but i think u have done well here, Owen is clearly a good player if fit and u r not paying too much in wages plus no fee.

i wanted him as a backup for us too.
my main point though is that i would like to know from proper man u fans if u think it is a bit of a panic buy after missing out on other big names eg benzima, villa (madrid bound apparently) and kaka
look forward to hearing proper opinions from u

  14. owen is right choosing for MAN UTD

  15. Well to win the CL is a tall order for man utd next season. Getting The EPL and domestic trophy may be possible at most only. Not without a lack of trying to get the best player to play here, it is not practical when RM is all out to spoil thing by spending big and most of the European players only want to go there only.( A giant magnet for world class player).
If it is only possible i hope David Beckham can come back to play for Man Utd.

  16. Owen scores goals wherever he is. He will score for us, we need a goalscorer as Berba isn’t a 20 a season man and Rooney is becoming a 20 a day man (not goals from the pics).
Who will net the crosses we get from Da Silva, Evra, Park, Valencia ? We need this guy and he needs us- good deal SAF.

  17. It is hard not to feel a bit deflated with this signing. I think most of you are putting on a brave face. We lost the best player in the world because, quite simply, he wanted to leave. We were likely unable to sign any of the other great players out there because they too wanted to be somewhere else (the same place as a matter of fact).

I am sure SAF took one look at the whole situation and said “who would want to be at Manchester and can score some goals?” Owen definitely fits the bill but only after we lost two great players and can’t convince anyone to live in Manchester. It is not a great position for any of us and there is no way anyone is going to convince me there wasn’t a hefty dose of desperation in this signing.

I too trust SAF implicitly but this was clearly not his first (or second, or third) choice and that scares me, plain and simple. Would Real sign Owen again? Would Barca sign Owen? Would Chelsea sign Owen? Not on your life and we’re as big a club as any of them.
