The tabloids are reporting today that we’re renewing negotiations with Gremio over the transfer of highly rated Douglas Costa.

The talented Brazilian, one of many young players to be nicknamed “The new Ronaldinho”, is reportedly keen on a move to Old Trafford but his club are holding out for more money.

The initial groundwork was done by United’s chief scout in Brazil, John Calvert-Toulmin. His ratings of Costa have convinced Fergie that he would be a quality addition to the squad and that’s why he’s trying to reach a compromise with the Porto Alegre club.

I’m not usually one to believe tabloid transfer tales unless there is sufficient basis for the story, in the form of quotes from people that are close to the players or clubs involved. But there is a common theme hitting the back pages this morning that United are offering an initial fee of £7 million with a performance related deal that could potentially reach up to £20 million.

If Costa does indeed join United, he’ll join fellow Brazilians Anderson, Possebon, Rafael and Fabio Da Silva, along with Portuguese speaker Nani.
