Wayne Rooney headed a deserved injury-time winner to send United into the Carling Cup Final as United crushed bitter rivals City 3-1 on the night and (4-3) on aggregate. Noisy neighbours City had bought a lucky 2-1 leading into tonight’s game and they were confident of “changing History”, interestingly since City last reached Wembley United have made 21 domestic cup finals and won 11 league titles.
After so much hype in the build up to the match there was always the risk of the game being a damp squib, thankfully the game lived up to its billing, the first half however was a cagey affair with both cancelling each other out.

The second half was a different story as Scholes opened up the scoring early on to level the aggregate at 2-2, soon after Carrick grabbed United’s second with a calm finish into the corner. With City on the back foot United pushed forward looking to kill the game off and with the goal beckoning an unmarked Rooney somehow managed to put the ball wide.

Almost instantly and out the blue City attacked and scored a lucky goal to put the match in the balance, Tevez flicked out a leg and the ball somehow squeezed beyond the keeper to make it 2-1 on the night.

United continued to press forward and it was Rooney who had the last laugh, two minutes into injury-time United got their reward as the evergreen Giggs delivered a perfect cross for Rooney to head home from close range to give United a deserved 3-1 win which could have easily been 5 or 6.

A final thought for City’s chief executive, Garry Cook, who said City would
“without doubt the biggest and best football club in the world”  and it was a case of “not if but when we are at Wembley having beaten Man United yet again”.
