August 13th, 2008 'I Know Arsenal Are Interested…But I Dream Of United' Manchester United have been linked to Ghana midfielder Anthony Annan in the press, a long with several other clubs. Like Aaron Ramsey, who recently signed for Arsenal, Annan grew up supporting United. Arsenal have recently requested that the player joins them for training.

The midfielder has been in England undergoing a trial with Blackburn Rovers, however Paul Ince has yet to seal the deal for the player who is tipped to be the next biggest thing out of Africa, following in the footsteps of his national team mate, Michael Essien.

If you need convincing any further, Anann poked John Obi Mikel in the eye during the recent African Cup of Nations, which I’m sure could inspire a jolly chant or two when the rent boys come to town.

After being out muscled from the Essien deal by Chelsea, is now the time for United to dip in to the African market?

“I know that Racing Santander, Blackburn and Arsenal are interested,” said Annan. “I have not heard anything about the United interest myself. I let my agent manage this. United was my favourite club as a child. If I get the chance, it would be a dream for me. I cross my fingers that something will happen in the next days.”

By all accounts, this player is supposed to be pretty special, and at 22-years-old, should have a long career ahead of him. However, in contrast to the barren period around 2005 and 2006, United are now packed to the rafters with talented central midfielders. Paul Scholes is the only one of these who is likely to have said goodbye to his United career in the next couple of years, with Anderson (19), Owen Hargreaves (27) and Michael Carrick (27) all with plenty of time in our shirt.

However, with a transfer fee likely to be around the £1.5 million mark, is it worth us putting in a bid?

The thing is I am a big fan of Rodrigo Possebon, he has great ability and if he is given the chance in our team I know he will be a great player. So we cannot have an unlimited amount of central midfielders, we have Possebon Fletcher Hargreaves Carrick Scholes and Anderson. To make room for Annan, Fletcher would have to be sold and Possebon would have to be sent out on loan until the retirement of Paul Scholes.

Yes is the basic answer to that, i commented on a thread about him the other day, he's a great young prospect and could be the next Essien, and thats not exagerating, even Essien himself tipped Chelsea to sign him, the truth is this boy is potentially something very special in the making, he's not only a midfield destroyer, but he can create make goals and has a deverstating strike on him aswell.

Anthony Annan, who recently completed a trial with Blackburn Rovers, who were expected to sign him, has confirmed that Arsenal and Racing Santander are also in the race for his signature. But the 22-year-old says his dream move would be to Old Trafford.

Annan is currently with Norwegian side IK Start. He had a trial with Blackburn and was set to sign for Rovers if they could agree a deal.

But that was before several other clubs became alerted to Annan’s availability and joined the hunt to sign a player described as the new Essien.

Annan was a Manchester United fan as a boy and although he is not aware of any approach from United, joining them would be his dream move.

“I know that Racing Santander, Blackburn and Arsenal are interested,” he told fvn.no.

“I have not heard anything about the United interest myself. I let my agent manage this.

“United was my favourite club as a child. If I get the chance, it would be a dream for me. I cross my fingers that something will happen in the next days.”

Setanta Sports report that IK Start executive Rune Jakobsen has confirmed Arsenal’s interest. Apparently the Gunners have been to watch him ‘a couple of times.’

But neither United nor AC Milan have tabled an offer as yet.

“There has not been anything concrete, but I do not rule out that something is going on now,” said Jakobsen.

“If things happen, it often happens quickly.”

Annan could take part in Start’s Uefa Cup clash against Rennes on Thursday, which could potentially complicate a move by leaving the player cup-tied for Europeasn games.

“We will, in principle, not refuse to play Annan in the game,” Jakobsen added. “If teams in the Uefa Cup are interested, they have to buy Annan before Thursday.

“I expect that there are a number of clubs sweating a bit because of that now.”

If he is a younger version of Essien, I say yes. Essien is just like Hargreaves, someone who can put in a MOTM performance at various positions. Would be nice having both he and Hargreaves in the squad.

I kinda agree except essien is MUCH better than Hargreaves. With us he could be the best CM in the world IMO.

Its nice to finally hear someone say they want to come after this summer though. (Berba hasn't spoke publically)

lol - talking about biasness...why only with us ?and essien is not much better than hargo, only he's had the luck being able to play constantly without injuries..that puts him ahead imo. in terms of ability hargo is not far behind

I think he's a better player in general because he's bigger, stronger, just as fast, a better, quicker passer and is better at being the engine of a team. He's more of a 'keane type' player IMO.

With us we would not restrict him to playing the DM role which he often does and we wouldn't put in RB either. I don't mean he'd only be World Class with us, but we'd build a team around him, unlike Chelsea have done.

I do like Hargreaves and I think he is a very good player (though last season I thought he was poor at CM minus 1 or 2 games) but Essien is world class.
