Barcelona are set to have a transfer tussle with Manchester United over Bayern Munich full-back Philipp Lahm, according to German sports daily Bild.
The daily has suggested that the English side are preparing to offer £8.5 million for the defender and that Barcelona are watching the situation very closely, and willing to match the offer.
United seem as if they need some reinforcements in defence after the transfer of Gabriel Heinze to Real Madrid and the injury problems of Gary Neville. They are also set to lose Wes Brown, who has been playing on the right this season.
It was understood that Ferguson wanted to sign Alan Hutton in the summer, but the Scotsman has been snapped up by Tottenham, so the attention has turned towards Lahm, who is naturally right-footed but can play very well at left-back too.
However, the Blaugrana are also interested after rumours suggested that Gianluca Zambrotta - another player who is right-footed but accomplished at left-back - will be leaving for Milan in the summer.
Daniel Alves is also on the agenda, but Barcelona are aware that Sevilla might slap an unrealistic price tag on him, and Lahm appears to be plan B.
The German international has been influential for Bayern in recent seasons, but a big money deal could well see him swap the Allianz Arena for either Camp Nou or Old Trafford.
Lahm burst on the scene with some great displays during the 2006 World Cup, and has gone from strength to strength since. He has been linked with Barcelona in the past as well.
However, Jurgen Klinsmann is understood to be a big admirer of the player.
Get him SAF!! He's not any worse than Patrice Evra & currently, he's one of the best wing-backs in the world of planet football.
Do you mind me asking a question? Has there been any German players donning the Red of Manchester before?
