UNITED are bracing themselves
for a summer raid by Benfica
for coach Carlos Queiroz.
The Portuguese giants sacked coach
Jose Antonio Camacho after a disappointing
campaign and have identified Queiroz as
a candidate to revive their fortunes.
Ferguson will be loathe to lose his right-hand man
for a second time after Queiroz ended his first spell
at Old Trafford to take over at Real Madrid in 2003.
He lasted just one year in Spain before returning to
Old Trafford. But Ferguson knows Queiroz - who has
taken an increasingly high-profile role this season -
still harbours ambitions in management.
United are aware he could be tempted by the prospect
of becoming his own man at Benfica but Queiroz is keen
to quell talk about his future.
"I do not want to contribute to speculation concerning Benfica.
"But it is always an honour and a privilege to know that a
great institution like Benfica may ponder on my name to
serve their needs," he said.
At United he is credited with the signings of Cristiano Ronaldo,
Anderson and Nani, who said: "It would be very sad if Queiroz left United."
