Sort Berba saga soon, says Ramos

Spurs boss Juande Ramos has called for a swift resolution to the uncertainty over Dimitar Berbatov's future, so he can "sign a replacement".

The Bulgaria striker was left out of Saturday's 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sunderland after it was decided he was in the wrong frame of mind to play amid interest from Manchester United.

And with just a week to go until the closure of the transfer window, Ramos has called for the saga to be brought to an end as quickly as possible so that he can bring in a replacement.

"We need to get this matter resolved before the transfer deadline," he said.

"If Berbatov goes, we will need time to sign a replacement. We want to have the best centre forward we can possibly get."

Ramos blames Berba for slump
Spurs boss hits out at wantaway striker

Juande Ramos believes Tottenham's slow start to the season is a direct result of outside interferences.

Spurs have suffered back-to-back defeats at the start of the new Premier League campaign, making a mockery of those who expected the North London club to mount a top four challenge.

It is still early days, but the speculation surrounding star striker Dimitar Berbatov's future appears to have disrupted the squad.

The Bulgarian continues to be linked with a move to Manchester United, and Ramos believes the ongoing saga has caused his players to lose focus at a crucial time.

"Of course there are repercussions on the players, against Sunderland (2-1 defeat on Saturday) for example we were only able to play with one forward and we didn't have any substitutes for that one forward," said Ramos.

"It's bound to have repercussions on the players.

"Players go through physical fitness issues that are good or bad, and this is a psychological issue. We've just got to deal with it."

However, in another example of how Tottenham appear to be divided at present, Jonathan Woodgate refused to agree with his manager's comments.

Manchester United close in on £25m Berbatov as Ramos lines up Huntelaar to replace sulking Bulgarian at Spurs

Down and out? Berbatov is edging towards the Tottenham exit
Juande Ramos has told the Tottenham board it is time to give up the fight to keep Dimitar Berbatov from Manchester United's clutches.

Spurs have been angered by United's public courting of their Bulgaria striker but the Spaniard wants an end to the feud so that he can bring in a replacement before the end of the transfer window on Monday.
Berbatov was left out of Saturday's defeat against Sunderland and fined a week's wages for not being ready for the White Hart Lane game.

United are ready to offer £25m for the 27-year-old and Ramos is already lining up Ajax star Klaas-Jan Huntelaar as a replacement.

A perturbed Ramos said: 'We need to get this matter resolved before the transfer deadline.

'If Berbatov goes, we will need time to sign a replacement. We want to have the best centre forward we can possibly get.

'This is the first time I have faced this problem as a coach and the truth is I have found it a conflicting situation to be in.'

Spurs have also been linked with a £10m move for Wigan's England striker Emile Heskey and are also tracking River Plate's Colombia star Radamel Falcao.

Spurs have lost both their opening Premier Legaue games while uncertainty surrounds Berbatov's future.
Excuses

However defender Jonathan Woodgate says the players who take the field must shoulder the blame for the poor start, and avoid making lame excuses.

"What because we've lost a couple of games it's Berba's fault? No, that's a load of bull," said the centre-half.

"We've lost the two games because we haven't played well. It's got nothing to do with him.

"The football club's bigger than one player at the end of the day. I don't feel it's been disruptive. The manager makes the decisions.

"Now we'll have to put on a good performance against Chelsea (next Sunday) or they'll wipe the floor with us."

All @@ on transfer front....

United await reply over Berbatov bid

Manchester United are waiting for a reply from Tottenham Hotspur after lodging a second official bid for Dimitar Berbatov.

Relations between the 27-year-old Bulgarian and Tottenham boss Juande Ramos are at breaking point.

The Spaniard refused to play the Reds' £25m target against Sunderland on Saturday or even select him in his squad.

Ramos said: "I have not selected him as I do not think he is focused enough and I do not feel that he will be good for the dressing room and the team effort.

"It doesn't matter how good a player is, if he is not in the right frame of mind, then he will not perform well.

"We'll have a meeting to clarify a few points.

"We have to wait and see in the next few days after the meeting, and make a decision to see if he is in a right state of mind for the next game - or whether we have to find other solutions."

The "other solution" is clearly a move to Old Trafford that Berbatov sees as a dream, and that Sir Alex Ferguson has had at the top of his summer wish list.

United had an initial £19m bid rejected by the White Hart Lane club, but have now upped the offer.

Spurs still want £30m but won't want a lucrative asset sat in the stands.

The Londoners, however, have been at loggerheads with United over the way they perceived the Reds have conducted business.

They are also obviously cheesed off with Berbatov's alleged deteriorating attitude so they are expected to make both parties sweat until the very last minute when the transfer window early next week.

SPURS CAVE IN OVER BERBATOV

DANIEL LEVY must make an embarrassing climbdown as part of the £25million sale of Dimitar Berbatov to Manchester United.

Tottenham striker Berbatov reiterated his desire to join United ahead of next week’s transfer deadline in a meeting with boss Juande Ramos and board members yesterday.

Berbatov is understood to have been fined a week’s wages for telling Ramos he did not want to play in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Sunderland – but he is set to report for training today.

Yet United have made it clear they will pay the £25m asking price, and offer Berbatov £90,000 a week, but want Spurs chairman Levy to drop his claim they made an illegal approach. Levy had accused United boss Sir Alex Ferguson of arrogance and hypocrisy for his pursuit of Berbatov, but the Premier League want more evidence.
