After a slow start to his Manchester United career, Berbatov has started to show the form that persuaded Sir Alex Ferguson to spend a club record £30.75million on him last summer.

The 27-year-old is up to 11 goals for the season as well as topping the 'assist' charts in United's rise to the top of the Premier League.

Yet there are still some who claim Berbatov is a waste of money and too often looks as though he does not care.

It is an opinion the Bulgarian accepts he can do little about. Instead he will continue trying to satisfy his own demands, although that in itself may be difficult.

"Half the people might like me - the other half might not," he said.

"But throughout my life, I have had high expectations for myself - so I just try to make the non-believers into believers.

"But even when things are going great I keep telling myself I need to do more.

"I am a perfectionist and I set high standards. Everything I do, I want it to be perfect. I know it can't be like that every time - but that is my aim.

"If it is near perfection, I suppose I am happy."

Berbatov's style of play is a complete contrast to the hustle-and-bustle approach adopted by crowd favourites Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez, which is probably why so much of his best work goes unnoticed.

It was the same for Ryan Giggs when he was younger, supporters tending to think David Beckham and Paul Scholes were doing more because they would fly into tackles - even if they were not particularly effective at making them.

Berbatov makes no apology for the way he plays. In true Eric Cantona style, he prefers the beautiful game rather than the one of fear and worry - and it seems Ferguson is in agreement.

"I am a relaxed guy," he said.

"I play that way and I can't change my style.

"I watch games and see guys who panic on the ball - they look so nervous.

"I can be calm, because I sometimes know what I want to do before the ball comes to me.

"The boss tells me not to change anything - he gives me freedom to express my qualities."

The frenzy of activity on transfer deadline day is a world away from the arena in which Berbatov is at his happiest.

But it is the one he was pitched into as Ferguson tried to prise the striker away from Tottenham.

It is little wonder either, especially because four goals in his last six games have included winners at Bolton in the Premier League and against his old club in the FA Cup.

Berbatov knows he is not on his own.

Apart from Rooney - expected to return after a hamstring injury at West Ham on Sunday - and Tevez, the former Bayer Leverkusen star can also count on the support of Cristiano Ronaldo, Giggs, Scholes, Michael Carrick, or any of the other star names with whom he shares a dressing room.

It is the kind of squad everyone else in the Premier League can only dream of - which is why it would now be a major surprise if anyone, including Liverpool, was able to peg them back.

"We are all different players here," said Berbatov.

"I am not just talking about the strikers. There are so many different qualities - but mixed together, we make a very strong team.

"That is the success of Manchester United.

"You can have great players and not have a team. Here, we have everything."

He never needed to win fans by his side, we as supporters were supposed to support him from day 1, he took time to settle and start finding the net, something pretty normal but some of us have very high expectations ..
I am confident he will keep on improving, he has showed us he`s worth the money we bought him for, Fergie knew what he was going for ..

We always pay big to Spurs when we want to sign a player from them, but it always proved to be worth. 30 million will be nothing near the contribution he will make, trust me.

It's wrong if Vidic doesn't get it in my view. Downright wrong.

In the summer when there were calls for us to sign Benzema and others, Berbatov was the player I wanted us to sign. He's a different kind of player to all the speed merchants that were being touted, he started slowly and has grown into the team. Hopefully he'll continue to improve now that he's found his feet and become a United legend.

it was definetly a lot of money for berbatov but that seems to be the going rate for proven quality and im sure he will justify it over the next six or seven years ,also its this time of the season when we really need players to hit form when the real big games are on the way not like a deco for instance who shone in his honeymoon period but seems to have gone missing now

Absolutely agreed.

I think it goes down to what I said in another thread about Vidic being a defender perhaps going against him.
