I believe the current team has the potential to be the best. If there was less rotation and we had the same starting 11 and tactics for a while they would beat any previous Fergie team.

this has been discussed over and over and no-one is gonna come to a consensus.

has anyone thrown busby babes into pot. just cos they aint around now and they never went on to win european honours, does that mean they cant be judged the best side ever.

each side helps add to the united tradition and that winning. your only as good as the teams you face.
Just a note, a lot of people, (including myself) were not around at the time (or born - like myself) and therefore do not know many if any players, apart from the obvious Duncan, also, not many people putting in George Best

I agree as well. We have a much better squad now but that XI were just awesome, all REAL men as well.

Think about the treble team, just for a second. Think about how our side WAS the World XI.

Schmeichel- best in the world

Irwin- best in the world, with competition from Roberto Carlos, couldn't go wrong with either of em.

Stam & Johnsen- Best pairing in the world by acres and acres

Neville- best in the world.

Giggs- best in the world

Keane & Scholes- best in the world.

Becks- He or Figo, best in the world.

Cole & Yorke- most prodigious strike pair ever.

Not to mention the bench with Teddy and Ole.

Blomqvuist? (sp)

I thought he was great for United in that team...an unsung hero as far as I'm concerned. His career was cut short by injury, I think...or I might be getting him mixed up with a different player...either way, he deserves a mention!

The current united squad is better imo.

The level of competition and demand for success is higher now with all the takeovers and so much more worldwide commercialisaion of football. Also the period of success sustained by the old generation team mentioned may never be done again due to life cycles of club 'teams' being much shorter imo with more foreign players and less time given for success.

I would say some of the players of that generation were the best but as a squad and strenght in depth, the current is better.

By the way, ronaldo would have easily gotten into the old squad too.

That's why I included the spine of the team in pairs. Johnsen was good, but obviously he wasn't world class. However, he and Stam however were definitely the business. Cole and Yorke individually weren't necessarily the best, but together they were magic.

Stam was a beast! I know rio and vidic as a pair and in terms class compliment each other so well but stam was like something out of a comic book for united. He was so big and had like an intimidating look too! What a player for united!

Think you might have been slightly biased there piazza!

Neville and Irwin at the time weren't better the Carlos and Cafu I'm afraid.

And there were better parings than Stam and Johnsen, e.g the Nesta&Cannavaro and probably Adams&Keown too, oh and I think Blanc&Dessailly were about at that time too off the top of my head, our defense wasnt half as good then as it is now.

Cole and Yorke not sure they were the most prodigous strike pair ever but they were certainly the best in the world at that time.

Could be argued that maybe Zidane would have edged scholes at that time but as a partnership him and Keane were the best.

Otherwise i agree :)

Fergie said he regrets selling Stam, he said he thought he'd lost a yard of pace after an injury, and lazio's money was good, but when he saw he said he was full of regret, especially when he was still doing great at Milan, a real shame :(

Irwin, Neville, Johnson, were no where near the best in the world.

Becks was that particular season, and should have won the Balon D'or.

Cole and Yorke individially weren't even the best in the Premiership, but as a partnership they were as good as anything.

Zidane, Figo, Ronaldo, Davids, ect would all have cases for being the best in the world in there positions.
