Bolivian star claims United approach

Source : Setanta

by Adam Marshall, 07 May 2008

Cruzeiro striker Marcelo Moreno claims Manchester United have made an approach for him.

The 20-year-old has two goals in four games for Bolivia after choosing them ahead of Brazil, where his father was born and whom he represented at Under-20 level.

Moreno's form in the Copa Libertadores has alerted several clubs to his obvious potential but he has told A Tarde that United and Shakhtar Donetsk have made concrete proposals.
"We know that we can dream of winning this trophy," he said. "So when I received the proposals [from United and Shakhtar], I spoke with the directors of the club and we decided to wait until the end of the Copa Libertadores to see what we will do."
The prolific former Vitoria marksman has eight goals in South America's top domestic competition and is hoping to help turf Boca Juniors out of the tournament this week.

"We have a young team but we are confident of overcoming a great team like Boca Juniors," he added.
United will be in the market for a new striker this summer with serious doubts over injury-prone hit-man Louis Saha's future at Old Trafford, although Angola attacker Manucho is due to compete for a squad place if he can obtain the necessary paperwork.

cheers mate, i dont think we should throw money at an un-known fella though, you'll have to go along way to find a better option than benzema in my opinion :)
You're talking as if to say that Cristiano Ronaldo was a known fella when he signed for United...:D

Oh Yeah!, he's wicked...scored against Gremio I remeber and He would cost way less and just about as much as Benzema...He's good!

Benzema will never play for United....!!:)

your basing this on???? We need to sign a world class striker! we've gambled on Manucho thats enough Arsene Wengering for now!

Have you seen some of the videos ? I'm not saying he is an immediate first team. But he can grow at United and is quality, just have a look at some of the videos , he does have skills with the ball. He is also a goal-poacher. Main-man sort of.

Bremen look to bag Bolivian
Race on for Cruzeiro striker

Werder Bremen are aiming to beat a host of clubs to the signature of Cruzeiro hot-shot Marcelo Moreno.

Moreno is regarded as one of the hottest properties in South America following his exploits for club and country over the last 12 months.

The 20-year-old has scored eight goals in this season's Copa Libertadores and his form has not gone unnoticed by Europe's top clubs.

Manchester United and Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk have been credited with an interest in Moreno.

English duo Tottenham and Manchester City are thought to have joined the chase for Moreno after scouting him in action.

However, Werder Bremen are hoping to steal a march on their English rivals by making a firm offer for Moreno as they look to lure the South American to the Weserstadion.

The Bolivian international is expected to make a decision on his future at the end of the Copa Libertadores with Cruzeiro unlikely to be able to resist any big-money offers for their prize asset.

Spurs' Moreno bid rejected

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11667_3566980,00.html

Tottenham have reportedly failed in a bid to sign Bolivia striker Marcelo Moreno, according to Cruzeiro president Alvimar Perrella.

The 20-year-old has also been linked with a move to Manchester United, but it appears only Spurs and Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk have made their interest official.

However, Tottenham have been told their offer is unacceptable according to the Brazilian club and, while Shakhtar appear to have met the £6m asking price, the player is understood to be reluctant to move to the Ukraine.

And while Parrella expects Spurs to return with a new bid, he is eager to hold onto the player for now.

"The proposal was well short of what we expected," he said. "For now, Moreno remains here and we count on him in Brazil.

"Of course, they should return to make a new offer but, until now, no (they haven't)."

As Moreno is part-owned by foreign businessmen, Cruzeiro would receive just 40 per cent of any transfer fee and, as a result, Parrella insists he is reluctant to sell.

"I am not urging him to accept because Cruzeiro only holds 40 per cent," he added.

"If we had 100 per cent, I would be very interested that he leaves but, with 40 per cent, I prefer him not to go.

"The negative response left us satisfied and I hope we continue with this thought."
