Bordeaux have conceded that they have failed in their bid to sign Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre.

Silvestre has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer, with Bordeaux and Serie A side Roma reported to be interested.

Les Girondins president Jean-Louis Triaud has confirmed that the 30-year-old was a top transfer target of manager Laurent Blanc, but admitted that the club have failed to lure Silvestre to Stade Chaban-Delmas.

"There are several targets for the left-back role," Triaud told French radio station RMC. "In that position, above all there was one who was his (Blanc's) first choice and that proved to be impossible.

"Yes, I think the possibility of Mikael Silvestre coming here has ended. He has a salary at Manchester United that he has no reason to forego.

"Moreover, after 10 years at that club, there is a tradition that a friendly match is organised for the benefit of the footballer - with the revenue going to him."

Thats good news.

Silvestre is a great left-back to have to cover for Evra.

I like him a lot as a left-back and hopefully he'll stay (if Roma are still after him.)
Agreed, and he looked fresh and sharp in a few reserves games and for the first
team when he came back from injury. Great pro and perfect cover for cb or Lb.
he has been training hard all summer while others are playing at the Euro's
or on their holidays. He will be raring to go in August and ready to be called on
if needed.

West Ham Want United Defender
Silvestre has been at United since signing from Inter Milan in 1999 and has won four league titles and two FA Cups with the club.

However, he suffered a serious knee injury last season which limited him to just three Premier League starts and ensured he spent most of the season watching from the sidelines.

Whilst Silvestre is a versatile defender able to play as a left back or centre back, United are well stocked in both areas and possessed the best defensive record in the league last season.

Indeed with Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand forming an impressive pairing at centre back and with Patrice Evra in superb form at left back, Silvestre’s days at Old Trafford appear to be numbered.

The People reports that West Ham have taken notice of this fact and are willing to meet United’s valuation of £2million for the player who will be out of contract at the end of next season.

West Ham may be in the hunt for a centre back as reports linking Anton Ferdinand with a move away from Upton Park continue to circulate, with Tottenham Hotspur believed to be favourites to sign the defender.

Silvestre, meanwhile, had been linked with a move back to France with Bordeaux although it is believed that the French side were unable to afford Silvestre’s wage demands.

I hope Silvestre moves. I almost have a heart attack every time he plays. He's like Vidic without the precision tackling, intercepting, defensive heading and positioning. Pique was the type of central defensive backup United needed, but now he's gone. If Silvestre does move then a new RB is probably needed.

to be honest I'd be glad to see the back of him. I could count on one hand the number of good things he's done for us whilst at the club. It seems to be his overall concentration or descision making that lets him down a bit, thats why he makes so many mistakes.
