This morning i was wondering that,if we had never signed eric cantona back in '92....would united be the force they are today or not i.e. would we have done the treble in 99 for instance.Just a thought!

No, we wouldn't imo.

Cantona was the catalyst for our success in the early 90's and that success brought money and that money bought better players and the better players won more trophies etc etc.

definitely a catalyst!! also an icon, made united a commercial force which released the cash in the transfer mkt! also always a pull for players to be able to say you play for the same team cantona and best did, or as in cristiano's case wearing their number!

As much as I agree with Dwarf about Eric being the catalyst to so much success,
he did leave a few years before the '99 season, so effectively he didnt have
much bearing on that season in particular, so I reckon we might not have won
as much if we had never signed him but we still would have won a hell of a lot.

I like this post as cantona for me was the reason we are so succsefull he was the final piece in a large jigsaw . United being a team who were at most a cup team for 2 decades needed that player like a george best a player to inspire young talent to grab a game by the scruff of the neck and win it out of no where . United's team at the time were looking good as it happened but cantona give it the skill needed to concour the league title time and time again . When cantona went we were buying players of high talent and preducing world class talent of our own . Though most of the credit goes to fergie eric cantona inspired a genaration to believe we were the best and in its self set the self belief we were the best and that is inbread in the roots of the club .

well he didnt sort of win us the league on his own and brought players to the club and the season we were set to win the league and then he got his ban and we threw it all away sorta explains the answer itself really so yeah cantona changed united for the better like best did
