Republic of Ireland defender Stephen Carr has announced his retirement from international football.
The Newcastle star has decided to call it day after the Republic failed to qualify for next summer's Euro 2008 finals.
Carr, who won 44 caps for his country, believes the time is right to give younger players a chance in the Irish set-up.
Honoured
"I feel honoured to have represented the Republic of Ireland on 44 occasions and have thoroughly enjoyed my international career," Carr told the club's official website.
"It's a chance now for the FAI to re-build for the future. There are many good
young players that are coming out of Ireland, with the likes of Kevin Foley at
Wolves, that should get the opportunity to play now."
Republic caretaker manager Don Givens paid tribute to Carr following his announcement.
"Stephen has been a great pro and a great player for us," said Givens.
"It's always sad when someone retires from international football, and it's sad to see he is going. But it's his decision."
A role model for all youngsters....and a great player...I remember him running up and down the wings from full-back for Newcastle....not so much for Ireland..??....but nonetheless a great pro and I wish him the best of look....
