Bayern Munich thrash Sporting Lisbon 5-0 in Champions League Five-star performance eases pressure on Jurgen Klinsmann

The German champions thrashed Sporting Lisbon 5-0 to put one foot firmly in the Champions League quarter finals, with Franck Ribery and Luca Toni both picking up braces to add to Miroslav Klose’s goal.
It was a result which will come as a relief to Klinsi, who has been savaged in recent weeks over his team’s poor form – leading to rumours that he would be sacked if Bayern failed to progress in Europe.
But with that progress seemingly secured, he can now turn his attention back to Bundesliga.
The result means Bayern are still unbeaten in this year’s Champions League – and again, it was French wizard Ribery who provided the German side with their inspiration.
Sporting had threatened early on, forcing Philipp Lahm to clear an Anderson Polga effort off the line. The game ebbed and flowed after that – but it was Bayern who took the lead three minutes before half time.
Ribery intercepted a loose Derlei pass before powering towards the Sporting goal, squeezing between two defenders and then sliding the ball past keeper Tiago.
In the second half, Bayern put the game beyond doubt. First Klose forced home a Massimo Oddo cross on 57 minutes before Ribery bagged his second from the penalty spot six minutes later following a foul on Lahm.
Toni added two late goals as Sporting fell apart, the Italian rising almost unchallenged to head in a fourth before comedy defending allowed him enough time and space in the box to score at the second attempt.
Klinsmann said afterwards: “That was beautiful to watch. We are standing with one and a half legs in the quarter finals.
“The big victory sounds fantastic, but we will remain focused. We have been punished for our carelessness in the past.”
While the Sporting players went home with their tails between their legs, their Bayern counterparts can now turn their thoughts to a crunch clash at struggling Werder Bremen on Sunday.
Having already lost three Bundesliga games in 2009, the Champions League success will mean nothing if Bayern – in fourth place and four points off top spot – fail again.

Franck Ribery played well for Bayern last night, despite recent tensions over transfer rumours. Sacked Chelsea coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said that he felt betrayed by Michael Ballack, which was one of the reasons he left the team. Stuttgart keeper Jens Lehmann is known for his tantrums and seems to be getting wilder with age.

They have been out of the Champions League the last season which will make the players all the more hungrier to do well this year. And 5 goals away from home in the knock-out stage of the Champions League is no small feat. We'll have to watch out if we progress which we propbably would.
