Torres to spark mad Man Utd, Liverpool scramble
June 12, 2007

Atletico Madrid are set to put captain Fernando Torres on the market.

The news will spark a transfer scramble with the Premier League's 'big four' all previously linked with the Spanish international over the past season.

Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal would be forced to offer at least 15million for Torres' services while the Daily Mirror also believes Tottenham, West Ham and Newcastle have the funds to mount rival bids.

The 23-year-old has scored 82 goals in 212 league appearance for Atletico while his record for Spain is 14 in 42 games.

His club's failure to earn a UEFA Cup slot this season means they are expecting to lose their star forward and the Premier League is the most likely destination.

Perosnally before the prospect of Berbatov came on the scene i was a big fan of Torres adnw anted to push for him in the last year, despite having a poor season at Atletico. I think he is all that we need in a striker young keen to learn can be a target man and with right guidence can be a 25 goal a season striker. He has already captained his side so knwos about pressure and hascapability of playing in europe and i know fergie is pushing to win Europe in his few last seasons. Why not if you will have to pay 15mill-20mill. I rekon honestly he will not stay in spain. He has already admitted before that england was the best and is where he would like to go. He said before he was a fan of arsneal's football but had said Man U wud be the right team for him with their big status. Also it was seen he had a captains armband, with you will never walk alone on. Which gives L'pool fans a bit of hope but i would be loving it WHEN liverpool fans think they can get the signing and then we take him and they will be depressed:eek: . Muhahaha:) :)

Good post MuX. I agree completely. Torres would fit the bill nicely. He would be a great signing. He's quick, strong, young, determind and a goalscorer. Thats exactly what we need.
It's clear we are going for a striker so we just need to get a top one and make sure Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal dont get their mits on any of these top strikers. Id be happy with one of Torres, Berbatov, Eto'o, Huntelaar or Tevez. One of those would do very nicely and for the rest not to join the other 3 teams would be a bonus. We just got to hope that United makes one of them an offer they cant refuse. And at £15 million we could surely afford him.

weve gt anderson nxt ronaldiniho we dunt need 2 throw money away bt i do luv tevez lol
Its true we have lots of good players but the more the merrier. We need a striker of proven quality. Ronnie is better as a winger and Anderson might take some time to settle in. I wouldn't call it throwing money away. Torres would be a great investment.

Yh....As Jazz said it is money well invested and he unlike new boys wont need time to settle in and learn the trade he has played top class football for seasons so can fit striaght in!...I think from being asked to pay 30 mill 4 him like last summer down to 15-20 mill is great....Think he is more realistic too, Berbetov looks as if he staying, Huntelaar looks as tho he in advanced talks with Juve, Eto'o i think will eitha cost a hell of a lot but has constantly showed his desire to stay at barca. Tevez has had 34 milluion price tag put on to try and get him and Man Utd ahve alreadi aid tht is too "steep" for them to pay, we want him on a loan for a season then pay around 15 mill for him afta tht. Tevez also come out and said he finds the interest from INter more tempting than UTD!...Also even if we do have Torres looks like saha going and Ole injured means we have Rooney Smith n Anderson 3 is not enough especially when one is not adapted and new so it would be good buy!...Fingers crossed on this deal i herd rumour last season too that Nike were willing to fund us 1/2 the transfer to get torres so that thye could pull off a marketing scheme wiv three of their bigges tplayers ll wearing nike and playing for UTD Rooney Ronaldo Torres

Torres would be a good signing for us, without question he is a solid, consistent goalscorer, but if we're gonna splash out for a 'top' marksman, then im still not convinced that he has that 'special something' that you need to really succeed at UTD, ie. Cantona, Keane, Beckham, rooney, Ron etc etc etc.
Im not knocking Torres and I would be glad if we signed him but I kinda just get this nagging feeling that it might be a sign him ' just for signing someone's sake'. By this I mean that the ideal signing is not available and we would just be signing him for the sake of having a 'striker'. Personally I don't think we really need another striker this summer, especially if SAF feels that he can keep louis relatively fit and should he decide to keep smith.
For me Eto'o is a no no no no no!!!!! he is quality for sure but is an absolute dressing room poison, he's proved it everywhere he's played and any one who knows anything about spanish football will confirm that.
Ideally I think it's about getting Berbatov, but that's not going to happen until next summer at the earliest, therefor IMO we would be better off saving the cash (considering what we've already spent this year) and going for Berbatov next summer, there is no way that spurs are going to sell us their best player two seasons running, ie Carrick last year and then Berbatov this year.
We also have options in Ole,Rossi and Anderson, and with the solidity in midfield we're gonna have what with Ron, Scholes, Carrick, Giggs the arrival of Hargreaves, its gonna give us a lot of freedom and options up front with Nani and Anderson.
For less money than Torres, we could have Owen or even Anelka, both proven goalscorers in the EPL.
That said I really wouldn't be too disappointed with Torres! lol

You are right about Berbatov Slip. If we could even get him next year it would be the best signing. We definitely need a striker now since its been confirmed that Saha will be out till Nov/Dec. Typical but what can you do. Even Smith is getting a bit restless and wants a guarantee of first team football which im not sure SAF will give him. So our options up front are starting to look a bit more limited.
I heard there might be a chance of Trezeguet which would be nice. The most likely signings in my opinion would be Torres, Anelka, Owen or Trez. We need someone anyway.
Looks like Villa is staying at Valencia which is great. Would hate to see him go to the Pool. Eto'o also.

Saha Aent cum otu and said he will be reid for end of season...buh i think his antics of not wanting to play and acallin himself injured has gone on too long and shud sell him b4 he rele gets injured...Trezuguet i think will go arsenal only way they gunna keep Henry i think as them 2 are rele good friends....they tried sme with ribery bcz they knw they bof got sme aganet and good firends buh he went Bayern for money, that is why Wenger got angry bcz he knew this cud mena henry cud go. Anelka jus dnt lyk him. Lol! jus a personal thing. Berbie wud b gr8 1 of his biggest fans and i feel we shud sign him next season...buh still need to get a Torres this season...i just think having by next seaosn Rooney Torres Berbatov...Anderson (Ole will retire i think...Rossi will go to Italy hasnt rele cut it in prem even tho beign described as the best natural finisher, jus hasnt gt strength needed for prem sorry.)(Smith i feel we shud keep him this season and sell him next seaosn and if he has a good seaosn his prioce tag will go up then relace with Berbie....Then we wud hav 4 world class striker swho are young oldes tbeign Berbatov 28 at the tym said to be a strikers prime...Which means we have a stble stirke force for many seaosn to come...Allows us to bring on different options if not working just dont see Anderson scoring alot of goals thin he will jus do alot of tricks and start counter attacks.
