Chelsea have beaten off all competition in the race to sign Serbian utility defender
Branislav Ivanovic from Lokomotiv Moscow, paying a reported transfer fee of £
9m. Avram Grant's second buy for Chelsea was said to be wanted by Chelsea's
Premier League rivals Manchester Utd.

As well the Old Trafford side, Ivanovic had also attracted attention from Italian
sides AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus as well as Spanish outfits Barcelona and
Real Madrid.

A statement posted on Chelsea's official website reads, “Chelsea can confirm it
has agreed terms with Lokomotiv Moscow for the transfer of Branislav Ivanovic.â€

“A work permit application has also been successful for the player. The transfer is
now subject to the agreement of personal terms and passing of the medical.â€

The 23-year-old is a Serbian international and can play anywhere in the back
-four. Despite previous stories about his possible arrival unsettling Wayne Bridge,
the fact is that Ivanovic is right-footed.

Born on February 22nd 1984 in Sremska Mitrovica, Yugoslavia, he started his
professional career at local side FK Srem before moving to Belgrade side OFK
Beograd in 2003.

After a three-year spell, he moved to Lokomotiv Moscow in 2006 where he won a
Russian FA Cup winners medal in his first season.

Like all Chelsea supporters, we here at welcome Branislav to Stamford
Bridge where we hope he has a long and successful career.
