Manchester United fans travelling to Rome on Tuesday have been warned they will be risking their safety if they do not cooperate with Italian police.

Recent matches between United and AS Roma have been marred by violence between rival supporters. Italian authorities have taken several precautions to avoid a repeat, such as free transport to the stadium and a voucher system for ticket collection. Greater Manchester Police have urged fans to be on their best behaviour. The two clubs are meeting in the Champions League quarter final on Tuesday. The free transport has been organised for United fans in a bid to avoid trouble previously seen on the Duca d'Aosta bridge.

Greater Manchester Police said anyone choosing to make their own way to the stadium - or those planning to buy tickets from touts - could be putting themselves in danger. In a statement, the force said that their Italian counterparts "have a robust approach to people arriving with forged tickets and general disorder".

Supt John Graves, match commander for the fixture, urged fans to take advantage of the free buses. "Anyone choosing to make their own way could potentially run the risk of coming into harm's way," he said. United fans will only be able to pick up their ticket at a designated ticket collection point 24 hours before the match, and need their passports as proof of identity.

"Anyone attempting to get into the game with a forged ticket could be liable to arrest," Mr Graves added. "We aim to continue the good work that has already been achieved in previous operations of this kind and prevent troublemakers ruining the reputation of genuine football fans." Officers from Manchester recently flew to the Italian capital to discuss policing and will also be monitoring British airports to target known troublemakers attempting to travel to Italy.

It is the fifth time the two clubs have met in the Champions League in less than a year. In the 2007 quarter-final, three United fans were stabbed outside the Stadio Olimpico. Scuffles also broke outside Old Trafford during the second leg, with 21 people arrested. The teams also played each other in the group stage of this season's competition and four Manchester United fans were jailed in Italy for clashing with rival fans in Rome in December.

Massive game, Rooney getting on the scoresheet before this game was just vital because he'll go on a streak now until the end of the season and I think he'll build on his brace against Villa with a goal here.

0-1 to United.

Euro Rivals Watch: AS Roma

Stadium: AS Roma share the Stadio Olimpico with fierce rivals S.S. Lazio. An impressive ground built in 1936, the stadium holds a total of 82,656 people. It also hosted the 1960 Summer Olympics and the 1990 Fifa World Cup.

Manager: Luciano Spalletti's managerial career began with a bang when he led Empoli into Serie A with two successive promotions. He then had spells at Sampdoria, Venezia, Udinese (twice) and Ancona before joining Roma in 2005, where Spaletti is credited with transforming the team into an attacking force. His influence was recognised by the Italian FA when he won the prestigious Serie A Coach of the Year award in 2006.

Previous Season: The Giallorossi finished second in Group D, two points behind Valencia and comfortably in front of Shakhtar Donetsk and Olympiacos Piraeus. The Italians giants then disposed of French reigning champions Olympique Lyon to progress to the quarter finals, where they met Manchester United. Things were looking up after a 2-1 win in the first leg, before the Red Devils demolished the Italians in the second leg with a 7-1 victory at Old Trafford. In a stunning display of attacking football, United roared into a four-goal lead by half-time. Further strikes from Michael Carrick, Cristiano Ronaldo and Patrice Evra capped off a perfect night.

Last Time We Met: 12 December, 2007. AS Roma 1 United 1. With the Red Devils already rest-assured of top spot in Group F, Sir Alex Ferguson sent out a young side at the Stadio Olimpico. Gerard Pique powered United in front with a bullet header from Luis Nani's inswinging corner from the left wing on 34 minutes, before Alessandro Mancini drew the home side level on 71 minutes with an unstoppable shot past Tomasz Kuszczak. United won the home match in Group F 1-0 courtesy of Wayne Rooney's fine goal.

Fingers will be crossed for five United players ahead of Tuesday's trip to face AS Roma in the Uefa Champions League quarter-final clash at the Stadio Olimpico.

Michael Carrick, Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand were all withdrawn in a triple substitution during Saturday's 4-0 win over Aston Villa. United then played the last five minutes with ten men after Ryan Giggs also left the field.

"I had to make the changes because of injuries," said Sir Alex Ferguson.

"Carrick, Rio and Patrice Evra all had injuries and then Giggs got injured towards the end. With the rain continually coming down, the pitch was starting to prove very heavy and that can be a problem with hamstrings. Hopefully they'll be all right (for Rome)."

The fifth player causing fresh concern for the manager is Edwin van der Sar. The Dutchman missed the Villa match, leaving Tomasz Kuszczak to start in goal with Ben Foster - who is ineligible for Europe - on the bench.

"Edwin van der Sar may be a doubt for Tuesday," admitted Sir Alex.

"He's got a groin problem again, it's happened two or three times in the last few weeks. We'll see how he is over the next few days. Not risking him today gives us a better chance."

I am really excited about this match. Man Utd and Roma are both playing superbly at the moment and it should be a great match. I hope that Rio and Evra shake off their knocks as they are crucial players for us. An away goal in Rome is crucial and I fancy us to get one with Ronaldo and Rooney playing so well.

I seriously doubt with the meanest defence in the whole of Europe this season, we would concede 2 goals. So, 1-1 draw with both sides sharing the spoils. However, that away may prove vital & helps us prevail regardlesss of the result in the away fixture. ;)

Yeah, I can't see Roma getting more than one goal against us even one at all.

I hope we show a bit more ambition than we did in Lyon and get that vital away goal.

Rooney has a habit of scoring in these big CL games so I predict him to score and United to win. Perhaps, 2-1 to United.

And O FFS, no more 4-5-1 pls dear ol' Fergie! Tonite from the Villa's game, it only showed that United should stick to a 4-4-2 formation with Rooney partnering Tevez at the front-line & Carrick with Scholes at the heart of United's central midfield! ;)

carrick rio evra and giggs could be out !!!

 so ... how do you think we should set up in rome considering these players had to come off against villa and we even had to play the last part with ten men with giggs having to come off
i think anderons energy in the middle of the park could be crucial, with hargo and scholes in there with him

I don't think they are injured..except giggsy of corse..they were all subed so they can be rested for Roma...Evra did get a slight knock but I think he should be fine for Roma...but don't worry we have enough cover...

Evra - Silvestre did get reserve games under his belt and could replace imo but we got O'Shea who is fully fit anyways

Rio - I really don't think he was injured...just saved for Roma because he played 90 mins for England and did travel to and from France. If he can not train all week and play vs loserpool and keep Torres in his pocket...he should be avaliable for Roma lol..if not I guess maybe Brown comes in centre and O'Shea on rb or even O'Shea in cb and we got Pique who scored in Rome last time who maybe could come in if injured..

Giggs - Did get a knock end of the game...Nani was rested from international game and vs Villa and should start vs Roma...if not there is always park!

Carrick - He didn't look injured...he also did not play vs France for england and was subed early..maybe he will start vs Roma? He did score those 2 crackers last season at OT vs Roma and did well to keep Totti quiet and also has expereince to play there unlike Anderson. But if he is injured we got cover. Scholes, Ando, Hargo can all fill in.

Like I said even if they are injured we can field a team that should be able to get the vital away goal!

0-2 to Man United. Our defence is solid and has not conceded a single League goal all of March. VDS should be back on goal and that is why I think we can get the clean sheet and the way Carrick has been playing as DMC and Hargreaves can also play that role really really well we should not concede imo. I think Rooney or Tevez and Ronaldo will score. Ronaldo simply because he can score from penalties, free kicks, headers, scrambles, tap ins, long shots, finish one on ones and so on and is also the top scorer of CL at the moment. I also think Rooney because he finally put his scoring boots on and always seems to score vs Roma. Tevez might score because he also got a taste of scoring and scores crucial goals like Lyon away.

i just hope rio, evra, carrick and VDS and play. even if carrick doesnt, hargreaves could come in. but carrick's passing will be sorely missed. and why, i do have a feeling that if carrick is available ferguson might just go for 4-1-4-1. hargreaves as the destroyer, and carrick and scholes dictating the plays with their fanstatic vision and passing. rio and evra has to be available. if not, they would be sorely missed. wes brown isnt just the same player when he is at centre back. john o shea wouldnt be able to provide those attacking runs down the left too.
