Reports in the media for the last few days have highlighted the sad demise of
arguably one of England’s greatest ever players.

Some say Gazza was the complete package. He had poise, skill and that natural
ability to do the un-thinkable.

But, where did it go wrong?

Was it a lack of direction?

If he’d had the right man behind, would it have been a different story?

Apart from Rooney, has this country produced another player to rival Gazza ?

Look at Sir Alex’s relationship with the bad boys and the players who could be
considered eccentric or difficult.

Eric Cantona being the best example I can think of.

What do you think ?

Could Fergie have tamed the wild Geordie beast that was Paul Gascoigne.

Or was Gazza always on a self destruct course no matter what ?

well he couldn save paul mcgrath from drink or bosnich and whiteside for that matter... but did save keane and cantona among others from possible self distruction! Gazza was a lout who happened to be a footballing genius, i doubt he would've stood for fergie's rules he just wanted to have a laugh!

I think Fergie could have reined him in somewhat. He made Eric feel very loved and wanted (especially around the time of his ban) and I think similar tactics would have worked with Gazza...he is more likely to respond an "arm round the shoulder" than a "roasting". SAF seems to know just how to handle players, when to give them encouragement and when to let rip the hairdryer treatment. I think at the very least his career at the highest levels of football would have been prolonged if he had come to OT and could you imagine a centre midfield pairing of Gazza and Robbo :O

agreed, Gazza was all set to put pen to paper when Fergie thought it was a done deal for him to sign for us and went on holiday. by the time fergie came back Gazza had signed for spurs. He wnet to london knowing nobody and far away from his family in the north east. At least if he had joined us he would have been near his nearest and dearest instead of befriending the likes of jimmy five bellies. he was a comic yet a very insecure immature man beneath it all and this is where Alex's man management skills would have settles him down. look at the way he has nurtured Giggs,Beckham(o a lesser extent), and mellowed the likes of keane cantona and now rooney to see he is as much a father figure as much as anybody else. In the case of the latter i don't think Wazza, (is it a coincidence his nickname rhymes with the Tynsider) would have survived too long in London or Rome without a wife or family as moral support so I think gascoigne has been unfortunate in the way his life has panned out.

please God he will recover as if nothing else he is a likeable fella.

I still feel sad that he couldn't save Bosnich. I'm of Malaysian descent but I live in Australia yet even so I'm not normally patriotic. That said Mark Bosnich was one of the few sports stars who made me feel pride for Australia. I watched him make a TRIPLE save once playing for Australia. After the second save he was sprawled on the floor of the goal and the ball went straight above him for the roof of the net. He somehow sprung up of the floor and reached right to the top of the goal and got his fingertips to push the ball up and over. I still don't know how he did it.
Such a waste.:(

If fergie thought he was worth saving he would have gone out of his way to help .

Fergie however is very single minded and he could just as easily have chewed gazza up and spat him out as he has done with so many who crossed him .
