Deportivo La Coruna 2-0 FC Barcelona

Second half goals from Juan Rodriguez and Pablo Amo saw Deportivo La Coruna pick up a much deserved 2-0 victory over FC Barcelona, who just about managed to show up physically.

Barcelona had left Lionel Messi, Samuel Eto'o and Xavi at home, and Victor Valdes, Andres Iniesta, Deco, Gabriel Milito and Eric Abidal were perched on the bench with the focus very clearly on Tuesday's game.

The only three players who will start at Old Trafford and were picked were Carles Puyol, Gianluca Zambrotta and Yaya Toure, and the effect of such major changes was there to be seen.

Barcelona managed to keep the ball in the first half, but failed to do much with it. Midfielders Rafa Marquez, Toure and Eidur Gudjohnsen guaranteed that possession was not conceded for long spells, but failed to do much else, while Thierry Henry, Bojan Krkic and Giovani dos Santos showed flashes of interest but nothing truly penetrative.

Barcelona enjoyed almost 70% possession, but got only three shots on target, none of them really worth noting. As such, it was no surprise that the game went into the break goalless. If anything, Depor should have taken the lead but to be denied by the crossbar with Pinto well beaten.

One wondered whether there would be any attacking changes, and we did see Deco come on for the second half. However, the pace was still lacking. Depor sensed that, and began to grow into the game, and duly went ahead in the 53rd minute.

Veteran Manuel Pablo made the initial run up the right hand side before playing the ball to Laftia, who got around Puyol and cut it back for Juan Rodriguez to poke into the back of the net amid a crowd of players.

Barcelona tried to lift the tempo, but simply lacked the desire, never looking like scoring. That was not the case for Depor, though, who made the most of a moment of indecision from Rafa Marquez to grab their second. Pablo Amo was the man who broke clear of the Mexican at the far post to comfortably nod in a free-kick, thereby sealing Barcelona's fate.

Former Barcelona youngster Cristian came on, and almost made it 3-0, only for a back-pedaling Sylvinho to clear the ball off the line in the nick of time. That is as it stood, with Depor marching towards the Uefa Cup, and Barca stranded in third.

Rijkaard will turn his attentions towards Manchester United, who were also beaten earlier this afternoon.

Just like Liverpool, they get the chance to field a crap team, cos they have no
interest and chance in their respective leagues.
How weak is that? Disgrace.
lmao!! They put pretty much the whole team on the bench or left out of the squad with the united game purely on there mind!

Without doub they will be fresh and they know even a 1-1 is enough to put them through.

I hope we give them a good hammering on tuesday...well i dont mind aslong as we win but it would be nice to kick them out of the CL!!

pz!
A horrendous game to watch. I'm absolutely disgusted at Barca's decisions to leave most of their star players out of this game. So what if they actually rested all their star players? That will not stop United hammering them on Tuesday! Imagine Barca woeful season ends with their trohpy cabinet empty? They truly deserved that!

100% Correct!
People are complaining that Barca rested
all their top players ...

But why ... ?

If you were a manager and the opportunity
arose where you could do the same ...

What would you do ... ?

Say: "Oooh a chance to rest my best players,
but no they must play because it is unethical
for me to do this "

Or would you rest them ... and give your team
a great chance to get into the Champions
League Final ... ?

I know exactly what I would do ...

It's a no-brainer !!

As a manager's view, I can fully understand your point. But in a football fan's point of view, I strongly disagree with what you has said.

The decision of the top clubs to play weakened teams in matches critical to the relegation issue condemns other relegation-threatened teams to the drop from the Premiership. The powerhouses decide their own priorities and what's best for themselves and select their teams accordingly so as to keep their star players fresh for the important European fixtures.

Are they even aware of the resulting serious consequences when a team actually got relegated? They prefer to concentrate on the Champions League games as they have nothing to play for in the league & domestic cup competitions.

When I very first started to watch football every team set out to win every games there's available to win. The best players were always selected by the managers and the strongest team appeared for every game. The case that it's not now, simply disgusts me! Relegation is hard enough to take but to know that another club greatly influenced the final outcome must be even more sickening.

In a previous era clubs who fielded weakened teams were fined but the authorities are turning a blind eye to this present situation. No longer are the ‘big' clubs just able to control events at the top of the Premiership table but by sending out weakened teams they are determining who is relegated as well. Is there no end to their power and influence?

Your right, its a no-brainer. I had this debate with my mates,
while we watched the Liverpool game. I was ranting and raving about
what a disgrace is was and they argues that the league is over 38
games and that the teams in trouble have had plenty of time to be
'out' of trouble as it were. But you are right essentially Carly. If I was a
manager Id probably do the same. Im sure United have been guilty of
this in the past and will be in the future. It doesnt make it right but
I see where you are coming from.

I share similar views to Rd4l on this issue as we have both mentioned it
in other threads, and it does seem horribly unfair to some teams,
especially considering the finincial aspect of all this. Things can like this
can irreperably damage football teams and send them into the oblivion of
lower leagues never to return. But I guess thats part and parcel of football
today and something for us fans to moan about ;)

hope this makes them lose their confidence a lot.....
resting players just because you have no chance to win the league is bad attitude..kinda like pool did against b'ham.....
and also like arse did in the fa cup against us and they were completely beat...then they didnt play well after that..
so hopefuly they will lose horribly against us!!!!
Stop right there we are at home 75,000 will sing our hearts out what more do our players need we will win and we will conquer europe once more
