CHELSEA striker Didier Drogba wishes he had PUNCHED Nemanja Vidic in the Champions League Final.

The Ivory Coast striker was sent off in the 117th minute for slapping the Manchester United defender – but now says that, if he knew he was going to get a red card, he would have hit the Serbian harder.

Drogba, 30, had clashed with Vidic 18 months earlier, cutting his eye and loosening a tooth.

And he said: “I have seen the match on video and I believe I should not have been sent off with three minutes to go.

“If I had punched him, I would have understood. Now I wish I had.â€

Drogba's red card prevented him from taking a penalty in a dramatic shoot-out.

John Terry missed the spot-kick that would have earned Chelsea their first
Champions League triumph and, when Nicolas Anelka also missed, United went on to make it a hat-trick of European triumphs.

But Drogba has more regrets about losing the final than being red-carded.

He said: “You have a lot of regrets when you go to the final and lose it.

“I have more regrets about losing the final than being sent off.

“The team was affected by the sending off and we lost on penalties.

“But it wasn't the worst feeling. Hitting the post was. I wasn't feeling well because I was playing alone and against world-class defenders.

“When you get a chance like that you have to take it.

“Some Chelsea fans blame me for losing. I can take it but I think I gave my best, as I always do, because I want to be No.1. Sometimes I want that too much.

“I apologised to my friends. People can make mistakes.â€

But Drogba is now promising to stay at Chelsea to fulfil unfinished business.

He added: “It's redemption time. Another reason for me to stay.

“You have got to understand what the Champions League means to me.

“I came from a poor part of the world, then moved to France.

“I was about 17, playing with Le Mans and I would sit with my friends in front of a TV, eating pizza and seeing players like Raul.

“I wanted to be part of it – the music of the competition motivated me.

“I just want to win the trophy, pay off a debt.

“I have been here four, five years now and I have seen the improvement.

“Getting to the final again is another reason why I want to stay.â€

In his autobiography – the English version of which was launched at Stamford Bridge on Thursday, with all the money from sales going to his Foundation to help children from Africa – Drogba pulls no punches when talking about his ambitions.

He writes: “Scolari made it clear he wanted me to stay. I told him I am staying. There is no need to worry, I am staying.â€

to be fair, Drogba would smash Vidic. If Rooney was on the pitch though then Drogba would be in trouble...

LOL how do you work that out?

ugh i suppose hes English, hes got a skinhead, and has a temper so hes hard. Vidic would batter Drogba and Rooney, fact.

Drogba mouths like this, but he'd never dare do it. Instead he slaps like a bitch.

Vidic would smash Drogba and every one stand in the Red Square in Moscow

Vidic and Vlada used to be the toughest lads in Red Star when they where young (R.I.P Vlada)

am glad that Vidic stood still and didn't shag Drogba as this had prove what a great person he is :)

Vida v Drogba...I know who my moneys on.

I'm sure SAF will remind Vida of those comments just before our next meeting with them in January.

Its like when Keane was sent off for 'slapping' Shearer. He said after that he
should have punched him, cos it would have been the same punishment.
'You may as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb'.

Either way, Vidic owes him one and WILL get him back in some way or another.

Because Rooney is harder than Vidic, and when Drogba slapped Vidic he had to be pulled away, but if it was Rooney he would go twice as mental as Vidic did.

I really can't see how people think Vidic is so hard. Yes he puts his head on the line more than anyone, but the amount of times he gets bundled over, shoved off the ball or goes down after a nock is very underestimated.

He has bravery though.

Rooney's a boxer and would just pelt Drogba and floor him.

but sorry i mentioned that Vidic and Vlada where the strognest lads in their team when they were young

Rooney is a bulldog/boxer full og strenght and agility also bulit good (but Vida is more like a giant polar bear :p) Rooney would tear Drogba a part also Rio can do that and most of the team can do it too

Drogba slaps like a bitch what do you expect from him hitting you with his Barbie pictured pink coloured handbag

lmao. I have never seen a striker or anyone out strength Vidic. and going down after a knock? what you mean a ****ing driven knee into his face and that being 3 times worse than what happened to Corluka yesterday.

plus, have you seen the size of his jaw? if someone punched that they'd break their hand!

FA will examine Drogba comments
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/c/chelsea/7680701.stm

The Football Association is to study claims in Didier Drogba's autobiography that he wishes he had punched Nemanja Vidic in the Champions League final.

The Chelsea striker was sent off in the final in Moscow in May for slapping the Manchester United defender.

The FA will investigate the remark and the book as a whole to see if Drogba has brought the game into disrepute.

A spokesman said: "We are aware of the comments and will be examining them in their proper context."

Drogba's red card prevented him from participating in the penalty shoot-out in Moscow, which Chelsea lost.

In the book, he wrote: "I have seen the match on video and I believe I should not have been sent off with three minutes to go.

"If I had punched him, I would have understood. Now I wish I had."

It is understood the FA is not viewing the incident in the same light as Roy Keane's 2002 book, in which the former Manchester United captain said he had deliberately injured Alf Inge Haaland.

Keane was banned for five games and fined £150,000 by the FA, but Drogba may simply be warned that his comments are unwelcome.

The 30-year-old Ivory Coast striker - who has been shortlisted for the 2008 European Footballer of the Year award - is currently out of action with a knee injury that he sustained playing against CFR Cluj on 1 October.
