Manchester United are preparing to swoop for Sevilla striker Luis Fabiano this summer, according to report

The Brazil international has jumped to the top of Sir Alex Ferguson's wish-list following high recommendation from the United boss' brother Martin, the club's European scout.

Chief scout Jim Lawlor has backed the move, while coach Mike Phelan travelled to Spain last week to watch the 27-year-old in action during Sevilla's 3-0 win over Racing Santander.

The Red Devils now head a pack containing the likes of Manchester City, Roma, Tottenham and Real Madrid as the race for the former Sao Paulo man's signature heats up.

Fabiano has been constantly linked with a move away from Andalusia this year, amid speculation of a bust-up between he and coach Manuel Jiminez and contractual issues concerning third-party ownership and buy-out clauses.

The Rojiblancos have set an astronomical price of ₤44 million for their star striker, who has scored 33 goals in 38 appearances this season, but it is understood the actual price could be as low as ₤7 million due to a release clause in the player's contract.

Such a thrifty purchase would leave plenty of spending money for United to pursue their other targets, including Fabiano's compatriot and team-mate Dani Alves, who has been tagged along with Porto defender Jose Bosingwa and Manchester City youngster Micah Richards to fill the right-back slot at Old Trafford.

- So would you prefer Berbatov for at least 25mil maybe more or Luis Fabiano for a cut price 7mil?
For me Berbatov has the kind of creativity that can inspire and make a person dream. But at 28 and that price tag, I'm not sure it will be a good investment.
Luis Fabiano though could represent a very good investment at 7mil.

A year younger than Berbatov and top scorer in La Liga, he seems to have finally found form in Europe after some torrid times in France.

He doesn;t inspire like Berbatov and he;s a good 2 1/2 inches shorter than Berna, but he sure knows how to find the net. The fact that several scouts and even first team coach Mike Phelan have ben dispatched to Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán to scout speaks highly of United's regard of the player and their intent.

I'm really still effected by the financial figures I have read on MUST's website (courtesy of Salford Red) and we have a quality squad there just needs a few quality additions. Fabiano and Manucho could be those additions without breaking the bank and making our financial mountain even more difficult to climb.

Imo, we should swoop for him.

Yes, in the past a lot of Spanish/South American players, especially players who are over the age of about 25/26 have struggled to adapt to the English game.

But that is a stereotypical view, and a view that doesn't hold up for every player.

He is a very good player imo, and at £7m, is worth the risk.

United in for Brazil duo

MANCHESTER UNITED will bid £30million for Seville stars Luis Fabiano and Dani Alves this week.

Boss Alex Ferguson is wasting no time in strengthening his squad for next season and expects to strike a deal for the Brazilians.

SunSport can reveal United chief scout Martin Ferguson has watched the pair 10 TIMES in the last three months.

Alves, 25, is seen as the long-term replacement at right-back for Gary Neville while Fabiano, 27, will add presence and goals to the attack.

The hitman, who has netted 33 times in 38 games this season, is only part-owned by the club — 65 per cent of his registration is owned by a private investment group similar to the Carlos Tevez situation last season.

Both players are regular starters for Brazil and Alves is regarded as the best attacking right-back in the world.

Fergie's first choice was Porto's Jose Bosingwa but he got beaten to the Portugal player's signature by Chelsea on Monday.

Alves was a Blues target last summer but they refused to pay his £24m tag. -TheSun

it will be a good signing that will help both the rb and cf position... but i didnt say it will be a great signing, i would prefer lahm or glen johnson for the right back position because i don't like alves temper and berbatov or dean ashton as center forward... and imo i dont wanna see united dominated by foreign players, just like arsenal and liverpool... but then again if it helps the club, why not!

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE here we come!

NOT ALVES! He's not as good as people say he is. Sergio Ramos is the best, shame he'll never leave Madrid. Philipp Lahm, if he doesn't go to Barca.

Maicon, Rafinha, Zaccarado... frankly I'm just not a fan of Alves. He didn't show up against Arsenal in the Champions League.

Plus he seems like a Chelsea player in attitude. Always complaining that "Sevilla won't let me leave". Boo hoo.

I think he'd just keep asking for more money before leaving for Milan. In that case he should probably sign for Arsenal, they're used to that. :)

Adaptability is my main worry. i just do not think Alvez will be suitable for the English league, neither Fabiano. If a Brazilian comes from brazil via portugal then it's bad enough, but if they go to spain and then england, then there's not many who'e done well. i don't think they'll make the grade at united. also fabiano isn't regular starter for brazil. ALvez i hear isn't good at defending while fabiano is 28 now. Going on the basis of fact, strikers who come to england at 28 for the first time - generally don't make the grade. ask £30m chelsea man.. I hope Ferguson isn't spending money for the sake of spending... this is the sily season

HALLELUJAH!

There is finally someone who has as strong an opinion on Alves as me. Hes over-rated and can't defend to save his life.

SunSport can reveal
Of course, it is newspaper talk. So it probably isn't true, but of course it doesn't stop us from giving our opinions on it.
