Its all joy at OT now after beating Arsenal , the happiness will increase with news that Rio Ferdinand has reached a provisional agreement over a new five-year contract that will keep him at the club beyond his 33rd birthday.

Earlier Pini Zahavi, Ferdinand's agent, had said that he wished to wait until the summer before discussing an extension to the England defender's contract, which expires in just over 12 months. But Ferdinand, having decided to commit his future to United, was eager to bring talks forward and, after conversations between Zahavi and David Gill, the club's chief executive, a deal has been agreed in principle and will be signed shortly.

The new agreement with Ferdinand has long been a top priority. It is not yet clear whether United have agreed to increase Ferdinand's salary, which is just over £100,000 a week, but the new contract will delight Sir Alex Ferguson, who had feared that the defender might be tempted to move overseas.

Negotiations over his previous contract took 16 months - involving considerable angst and, at one point, the arrival of a gang of balaclava-clad United fans on the player's doorstep, telling him to “sign or else†- but this has been a remarkably swift process, reflecting Ferdinand's increased sense of belonging at Old Trafford.

Agent: Ferdinand Agrees Bumper New Contract

Source: Goal.com

According to Rio Ferdinand's personal prime agent, Pini Zahavi, the 29-year-old central defender has penned a new five-year contractual deal with Premiership reigning champions Manchester United...

Rumours that the England international was to quit Old Trafford in favour of FC Barcelona abound, but it seems now that he'll remain with the Premier League champions for the long term.

While the player's last contract raised eyebrows, given that it was worth £120,000 (€150,000) per week, the new deal actually increases on that amount.

It is thought that the ex-Leeds United man will now earn £130,000 (€162,000) per week for the next five years.

He'll be 34 at the time of his contract's expiration, but Zahavi sees much more success to come for Ferdinand.

The agent said, "This new deal will take him beyond 34, but it won't be his last contract and in all probability it won't be his last contract at Manchester United.

"Rio is very, very happy there, he wanted to stay and they wanted him to stay. Of course he course he could have gone to another big club but he did not want to.

"I believe he can play longer than [Paolo] Maldini - and they believe so at Manchester United as well."

Ferdinand, a vice-captain under Sir Alex Ferguson, arrived at the Red Devils in 2002 for £29m (€36m).
