Manchester United are on course for another potential contract dispute after Rio Ferdinand's advisers told the club that he will not discuss a new deal before the summer.

United are eager to open talks with Ferdinand over an extension to his contract, which expires at the end of next season, but Ferdinand's agent, Pini Zahavi, has instructed that negotiations will not start before the summer.

The Old Trafford hierarchy is hoping that an agreement will be reached quickly at that point, but, given that it took 16 months to complete Ferdinand's present contract, it is apprehensive about the situation.

United are also aware that the 29-year-old has expressed an ambition to play in Italy or Spain towards the end of his career and that, because he would be eligible to leave on a free transfer if no deal is agreed by June 2009, he and Zahavi will be in a strong bargaining position when negotiations start. Whats the ****ing point in having a ****ing agent. Your Rio ****ing Ferdinand. What the **** does Pini Zihavi do for Ferdinand but take a cut from his wages? Disgusting.

Any young kids here who might have a future in football, do not ever get an agent. If a club wants to buy a new player, they will look at you if your good enough, regardless if you have an agent or not.

This is absolute nonsense again from the times.

Zahavi cleared things up on Sky Sports News earlier today and said contract starts will go underway shortly.

So please, before you open your mouths. Wait for confirmation. Incredible how reactionary people are to some bullshit article.

a footballer is good at football not finance . any player without an agent is a fool .

the agents know what other players are earning and before they got widely involved players earnt far less than they do now .

that said the salaries on offer are crazy but the players are the product so if the products value rockets should they not get a cut of the pie ?

stupid footballers however let the agents tell them what to do and when and that i feel is the real problem .

its all about brinksmanship . look at roy keanes pay negotiations he made it clear he had other options and also he knew what united would have to pay any player they replaced him with

Rio all set for summer deal talks

Manchester United will reportedly open contract talks with England centre-back Rio Ferdinand at the end of the current campaign.Ferdinand's current deal expires at the end of the 2008/09 season and, in line with United's renewal policy under the Glazer regime, negotiations will begin 12 months before the end of that contract.

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been exasperated with attempts to tie fellow England defender Wes Brown to an extension and last week issued a broadside on players who "live in the pockets" of their agents.

Brown has yet to sign a new deal and Ferguson will hope to avoid any such hold-ups with 29-year-old Ferdinand, who has developed a formidable partnership with Nemanja Vidic at the back.

Ferdinand's current deal was signed in 2005 after several months of negotiation.

When they were a plc, United's policy was to start talks two years before a player's deal expired and the new arrangement does leave the club more vulnerable to players leaving on a free transfer, as Brown will be able to do at the end of the season.

Rio (and his agent) are just looking their big payday. At 29, his next contract will be the biggest he will ever get for the rest of his career....so you can understand that he will be out to get the most he can...and so he should!

He has been an outstanding player for ManU and there are a ton of teams out there that would sign him in an instant!

Instead of all this posturing...why not just get the checkbook out and hand over some of those vast funds we have to a play that has been loyal and given his all for the club!

Alot of people have discussed new transfers, but it is more vitally important to retain the services of your key players long term to preserve continuity...as this is what helps a team stay successful.

As a side point...if Rio ended up leaving...who would play in his spot? Would somebody step up long term in the middle of the defence or would we have to enter the transfer market ourselves for another experienced DC?
