Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has told his side to reach for the gas pedal as they seek their tenth Premier League title.
Manchester United overtook Arsenal on goal difference at the weekend thanks to their win at Derby and the Gunners' home draw with Middlesbrough.
Game In Hand
But the Red Devils can stretch their lead to three points tomorrow night as they play their game in hand at home to Bolton.
United lost the first fixture against the Trotters 1-0, with Fergie himself being sent to the stands, but the boss is convinced his side can now rally to a strong finish and title triumph.
Let's Motor Home
“We need to get our foot down and start motoring on now," said Fergie. "We want to drive home our advantage at the top of the league by winning our game in hand. We want the three points against Bolton, then look forward to a real battle against Liverpool on Sunday.
"The important thing is to get consistency to make sure we don't drop from a good level," he added of his side, who have won their last three league games but surprisingly crashed out of the FA Cup at home to Portsmouth. "We have got a tough programme. But then I look at Arsenal's and Chelsea's and it is equally tough.
Down To The Wire
"It is not going to be easy," Fergie warned. "It is going to be very, very close this season - it could even go to the last game. So to give yourself a proper chance you have to have a good consistency - that is what is going to win it.â€
Consistency Edge
And Fergie believes that it is this strain for consistency which gives United the edge over Arsenal in particular. The Gunners have won just one game in seven and drawn four consecutive league games to throw away a once five-point league lead.
"I said some months ago that there would be points dropped by the leading teams and that is happening. Ourselves, Chelsea and Arsenal have all dropped points. Therefore if we can go on a consistent run from now to the end of the season it will give us a better chance," said Fergie, adding of the Portsmouth loss: "You have to deal with and react to defeats - that is the nature of this club. It happens. It is part of football. The important thing is to do something about it.â€
Profligate Finishing
Nevertheless, the Scot was far from happy with the way United played on Saturday, even if they did beat Derby 1-0 through Ronaldo's late strike.
"The missed chances are becoming a concern. Against Portsmouth and against Derby, we were really charitable. It's a sticky spell that we must get over because we've got big games coming up - against Bolton and then Liverpool at home. We want to start taking our chances. If we start taking them then someone is going to suffer. We'll just have to keep going at tht.â€
