Goal difference may decide who wins the Premiership title this year, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed.

Not since Arsenal beat Liverpool to the old Division One title in 1989, have two clubs been separated by goal difference after finishing level on points.

But the United boss can see a repeat this year and is confident that his free-scoring United team will have the edge in a tight contest.

The defending champions smashed five past Newcastle last Saturday. In January they beat the same team by six clear goals and have already put four past Wigan, Middlesbrough, Derby, Sunderland and Aston Villa this season.

United's have now rattled up a goal difference of plus 40, to enjoy a four goal advantage over Arsenal. United are 19 goals better off than third-placed Chelsea.

"We're scoring a lot of goals and, you never know, it could be an issue," said Ferguson. "We just want to make sure that if it goes to goal difference, our own tally is good.

"I've always said that having a superior goal difference is worth an extra point. It could be vital this season with the championship being so close."

United lie just three points behind Arsenal who visit Old Trafford in April. Both teams have to visit Chelsea and Ferguson believes that points will be dropped by all the sides competing for the title in the remaining 11 games of the season.

United meet Fulham and Derby County, both rooted to the foot of the Premiership, in their next two league games. Ferguson expects his players to emerge with six points from the away matches and enhance the team's goal difference advantage. Derby and Fulham have conceded 102 goals in the campaign so far.

Ferguson is looking to winger Cristiano Ronaldo, with 29 goals this season, Wayne Rooney, on 13, Carlos Tevez with 15 strikes and French striker Louis Saha with five goals, to plunder two of the division's most porous defences.

"Louis Saha coming back is another big bonus," added Ferguson. "Louis is different from everybody else we have. He gives us strength and penetration."
