Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admits Nemanja Vidic has become a cornerstone of his team.

performance last weekend against Everton at Goodison Park. He followed it up with another commanding display at Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday, prompting praise from his manager.

"Nemanja always asks a question of defenders," Ferguson told manutd.com. "He wants to know whether they have the courage to put their head in front of his.

"He is a throw back to the old style of defender, but there's no question he can play, there is not a doubt about that. He doesn't mess about in terms of clearing the ball. He acts like a defender and that's a real asset to this squad."

"He got me four goals last season and has already got one this year," said Ferguson. "I think he can easily get between five and 10 because he has got just the right qualities."

Vidic for me is one of the best that we have got in the back 4, and he is getting better and more confident all the time. He is fantastic going forward and he as got a very strong and firm presence in the air, climbing high and accurate to get us the goals on corners and free kicks ect...

His partnership with Rio Ferdinand is that of a well combined and strong formation. They work well together and they keep the center of the field strong, organized and in order.

Vidic got 4 goals for us last season i think in all competitions and he as already got off the mark this season, i think thats great from a defender. I'd love to see him start as many games as he can this season, i believe that he is a lot better than Wes Brown, he as got more skill and the added fact that he can get forward with his head and nip in a goal or two on the way. A very good signing from Spartak Moscou! Although it is worth pointing out, 2 yellow cards in 7 games, just make sure that he keeps it cool,. the last thing that we want is another defender not available to play.

Yeah that's my only critisism (sp) of vidic, is the yellows but if you took his strong tackling away he wouldn't be the player he is :)

keane7 took the words right out of my mouth, we havn't had such a threat in the opposition box since bruce years ago, he also puts his body on the line like bruce did, very brave, i also think that the vida/rio partnership is the best we have had since bruce and pally. and there is plenty of years left in these 2. if these 2 can stay fit with all the attacking power we have, i predict a champions league win in the next year or 2
