Italian international Guiseppe Rossi spent two years at Old Trafford before being sold to Villarreal in the summer of 2007.

However, the 21-year-old has a buy-back clause in his contract which Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson admitted was tempting him.

“We would be interested in bringing him back,†said the United boss to the Daily Telegraph, “When Villarreal offered the money they did, we put in a buy-back clause. You always keep your options open.â€

Rossi scored an impressive 23 goals last season and has hit five goals in seven outings in the Primera Division this season - and his former boss confessed he had been reluctant to let him leave Manchester.

“It was difficult to let him go. It was based on the fact that he wanted first-team football and we couldn't guarantee it. Simple as that,†explained Sir Alex, “He's doing very well now. He's an excellent player.â€

Yet the chances of United being able to guarantee Rossi first team football again seem slim as the club currently enjoy a wealth of attacking options.

Dimitar Berbatov was added to the squad over the summer at a cost of more than £30 million, and along with Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez provides the Red Devils with huge strength in depth up front.

Indeed, Berbatov's arrival has pushed Tevez onto the bench at Old Trafford and speculation has arisen that he may leave the club this season.

The champions also possess Fraizer Campbell, who is currently on loan at Tottenham Hotspur where he has been making headlines with his goalscoring prowess.

Recent reports have also speculated that Ferguson is considering recalling the youngster in the January transfer window after being impressed by his form.

Wellbeck ahead of this yank at any day
LMFAO, sometimes you really don't have a clue do you?

Rossi= Leading scorer on a champions league club, full international for the defending world champions.

Welbeck= 1 league apperance.

On another thread, you blatantly said you hadn't seen enough of Welbeck to judge him, yet you can rate him over a player who's clearly quality?

LOL this is funny..sometimes you have to wonder the mind games sir alex is playing.

Even if its real, i doubt Rossi would want to come back and compete once again with what we already have.

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he would be interested in re-signing former Manchester United striker Giuseppe Rossi.

The Red Devils sold the Italian in 2007 for £6.6million but the Premier League champions insisted a buy-back clause be inserted into the player's contract.

Ferguson will take a closer look at the American-born striker when United travel to Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League group stages on Tuesday.

It is expected that Rossi would cost United more than they received for him just over a season ago, but Ferguson has insisted that it was a difficult decision to sell him in the first place.
Interest

Ferguson said in the News of the World: "He's a good player, in fact, an excellent player. It was difficult to let him go to Villarreal.

"It was based on the fact that he wanted first-team football and we couldn't guarantee him that.

"When they offered the money they did for him and we got the buy-back clause, it became attractive to us.

"We'd consider buying him back. We will keep our options open."

Ferguson's comments pour further doubt on Carlos Tevez's Old Trafford career as the club have yet to offer the Argentinean a permanent deal, with his two-year loan set to run out at the end of the season.

Tevez has slipped down the pecking order at United since the arrival of Dimitar Berbatov and has been linked with a switch to Real Madrid.

United failed to capitalise on Chelsea and Liverpool's home draws on Saturday as they themselves drew 0-0 with Aston Villa at Villa Park.

The champions find themselves eight points behind the leaders with a game in hand.

But with the World Club Championships approaching in December there are fears that United will face a fixture backlog in the vital months of the title run-in.

This is something that doesn't worry Ferguson.

Congestion

He added: "We are delighted to be playing catch-up because it means we did things right during the previous season.

"To win the event in Tokyo would be great. We won it when it was a one-off game and now we have the opportunity to become the first British team to win it in its new tournament format.

"We will have to manage the second half of this season as best we can. We don't want to get to April and May and have to play rearranged games.

"Fulham and Wigan are our outstanding games and we will try to arrange them for January."

What if they do not want to leave Villa
honestly i think o neil has such a good relationship with them i don't actually think they would want to leave villa- your right, but circumstances change and every player has a price so think we should just keep an eye out, but i honestly think they are good now and could become great given the chance

Abo don't be an idiot, if you rate Welbeck above Rossi right now then I am afraid you know nothing about football. Are you aware that most of those 13 appearances for Newcastle came off the bench, are you aware that when his loan spell at Newcastle ended he went on loan to Parma and had a goal scoring record of 1 in every 2 matches there. He pretty much single handedly saved Parma from relegation, Ranieri who was in charge of Parma when Rossi was there wanted to take him to Juventus but Villareal offered the money before Juve did. Rossi is an absolute quality player in my opinion and letting him go is one of the biggest mistakes Fergie has ever made.
