Manchester United line up January move for Porto's Fernando

Fernando is approaching the end of his contract in Portugal and has been liked with a move to Inter Milan or Juventus.

But reports in Portugal suggest that United have now also thrown their hat into the ring in a bid to lure the 26-year-old to Old Trafford.

According to A Bola, Porto will look to sell Fernando in January if they fail to qualify from the group stages of the Champions League rather than lose him for nothing when his contract expires in the summer.

And that has alerted United to the possibility of a cut-price deal for a player who could help strengthen their midfield.

The Brazilian-born player is also close to securing Portugese citizenship, removing any requirement for a work permit should he make the move to England.

David Moyes missed out on Cesc Fabregas, Ander Herrera and Sami Khedira as the transfer window drew to a close, and while he did manage to sign Marouane Fellaini from Everton, it is thought he will be looking to make further additions in January.

Fernando has never represented the nation of his birth at senior international level, having made the move to Porto as a 20-year-old in 2007.

For once the kind of midfielder we lack. I have been seeing lot of AMs being linked but thats something we cannot fit in because of Rooney, Kagawa and Januzaj (and if need be Fellaini as well) already vying for that position. We need proper CMs who can shore up the defense and provide the link between the defense and our attack. If we have a proper DM then guess Carrick could be freed up to play up the pitch.

No, we need a more creative player now. Fellaini isn't good enough going forward & he wants to play DM anyway. A quick, creative, box-to-box midfielder is what we need and right now - despite his poor form - Herrera looks like the best option.

Herrera is not the best option at that price,, it's silly money, I'd rather bid on barkley or koke...

I would not mind either of them.

United’s pursuit of Fernando made simpler as midfielder now free to move around Europe

FC Porto midfielder Fernando has made his potential move to Manchester United a much more straight forward process after being granted Portuguese citizenship, he confirmed on his official Facebook page.

What the work permit means is that the 26-year-old is now free to move between European countries without the need for a work permit which takes away a potential hurdle between him and a move to Old Trafford.

In the past, United have nearly lost out on players such as Javier Hernandez due to work permit complications so this is great news.

Talks with Porto have reportedly re-opened with the intention of making Fernando the highest paid player at the club ahead of the summer where his contract will have expired, but there are plenty of people that feel he is precisely the midfielder David Moyes should be looking at. United would also not struggle to beat the wages offered by Porto.

Fernando was in action last night as Porto overcame Rio Ave 3-1 where he played in a defensive midfield role. He is an all-round midfielder with the ability to put in strong tackles and interceptions all while possessing a sharp eye for an incisive pass and a smart short passing game to match. In every respect, he is a midfielder who would strengthen the squad.

As for value in the market, you won’t get any better than free and if Moyes wanted to make sure he landed him, a small fee could lead to a January move instead to bring Fernando to Old Trafford next month.
