Scotland hope to start with Darren Fletcher in Georgia on Wednesday after the Manchester United midfielder made a surprise return to the squad.

Fletcher has not played since suffering a knee injury in Scotland's 1-0 victory over France on September 12.

But Alex McLeish received permission to call him up from United boss Sir Alex Ferguson after he came through a fortnight of training.

And, after midfielder Scott Brown pulled out, Scotland assistant coach Andy Watson has confirmed they were hoping to call on 23-year-old Fletcher from the start in the crucial Euro 2008 qualifier in Tbilisi.

"We are hoping so, that's why he is here," said Watson.

"We will need to see when we get over there and get bedded in with Darren but he has done a couple of weeks' training - a full week without the ball on the running side, and a full week training with the squad.

"So that's fantastic and it's great he has been able to come in and be available for us given the call-offs we have had."

Brown limped off with a hamstring injury during Saturday's 3-1 win over Ukraine and Scotland have also lost Lee McCulloch and Garry O'Connor to suspension and Alan Hutton through a calf injury.

Graeme Murty has also been drafted in and fellow full-back Gary Naysmith is improving after picking up a knock in the Ukraine clash at Hampden Park.

"That's one of the knocks that we will need to assess once we get over there and we get training tomorrow," said Watson, who was speaking before the squad flew out from Glasgow Airport on Monday morning.

"The physio has been working on him and he is feeling a lot better today than he did after the game on Saturday."

can he take on villa though, reo-coker is the type of player who gets tight quickly and isnt feared of snappin at the ankles, fletch would need to be on form to control the game at villa park, unless its scholes he partners, who will then be runnin things. depending on the scotland performance id imagine its between him and anderson as to who partners scholes. but aye, its good for scotland all right

the fletch is more inportant for scotland than he is for us, lets hope he can put in a man utd type peformance for his country, by that i mean a performance that would be worthy of a man utd midfielder. the scots are missing some key players for this crucial match i just hope they don't slip up after all there great work so far in the campaign
