Sometimes I will see some names on this forum and
will simply dismiss them as "FM players", Akinfeev,
Ustari, Asenjo, Saivet just to name a few.

But, when you think of it, why shouldn't we trust
FM? The producers of these games spend thousands
of pounds on a yearly basis evaluating players so,
if FM say they have potential, why should we doubt
them?

I remember having Robben, Ronaldo and Rooney on
a game that was made in 2002. Rooney was at Everton,
Ronaldo at Sporting and Robben at Groningen, in 2008
they were all world class. How is it that these players
were programmed to have such potential?

So, when you think about it, if FM says that Berbatov
is better than Tevez, for example, why should we doubt
it? They spend thousands of pounds, hiring professionals
to evaluate player attributes so why shouldn't they be
better than normal supporters and aficionàdos like us?

If Asenjo is worth £30mil. in 2015, why couldn't it be so
in real life? They've obviously evaluated him and decided
that he will be and they obviously know better than us,
so why shouldn't Asenjo be a realistic target considering
that our Scouts are, I presume, just as good or better.

It makes you think, doesn't it?

Because history has shown they are quite often not right. The researchers for each club are just average joe's like you or me who agree to be the researcher.

However, if I hear a name I don't know, sometimes I will check it out on the football manager database just to get a general idea of what they are like, but it should always be taken with a pinch of salt.

FM gets its stats from a highly reputable professional football player scouting company, a company used by many many clubs. What it cant do, however, is predict the future. I'm pretty sure in FM 2002 there were wonderkids who today are unknown.

That's pretty interesting actually Peejay.
I never really thought about it like that to be honest.

Like you said it's experts that analyse these games to the depths and they do predict players like Rooney and Ronaldo to become world class when they are actually young and unproved.

It's amazing what technology can do these days and I suppose there is a lot of comparing of players to this game as they are in reality. It's a good chance that the guys who created these players and their attributes actually do work for scouts in some parts of football today.

I heard a while ago that Everton had teamed up with the FM scouts in an attempt to unearth some rough diamonds.

To be fair to the FM scouts they're usually spot on.

Yes, but not only.

A lot of players in FM who are not from major leagues are not scouted by anybody else, but the fans of the game, who agree to be researchers.

Because it's just a game. They are bound to get it wrong now and again. Actually they DO get it wrong quite a bit. Pisses me off on here when people say that player x is amazing cos he is on FM. They should try watching football rather than believing what some geeks are telling them on FM.

It's true alot of players that are good on that come good 2 years or so later in real life.

I thought Sven had been playing FM when he joined Man City as Corluka, Elano and Bianchi were 3 of the best players on FM07.

The researchers spend a heck of a lot of time on the game.

They are always going to get some right, but they're always going to get some wrong. It would be interesting to see what the difference is. Apparently, the Chelsea chief scout (not sure if he still is or not) used to search the FM database to get a list of players to scout.

But yeah, judging players solely on FM is ridiculous and there's no way you can do it successfully.

Titus Bramble was amazing back at Ipswich on the games, went on to be one of the best...

Theres no doubt that it is an accurate tool, but nothing accounts for real life scouts watching the real thing and judging for themselves...

But it is a good place to get ideas if you struggle to watch a lot of worldwide football...

they never get it perfect they never will but they do have a good grasp on whos good and whos not i suppose.

but its not a trust source, its a game and as we know in games you can do the impossible, like get newcastle into europe lol.

prime example of them getting it wrong : Tuncay of borough was amazing on FM 2007 was getting signed by barca, real, united etc everytime i started a new game, and now relegation threatened borough- FAIL

Getting it right? : pato, he was amazing on FM 2007 and aint half handy in real life.

but one thing for sure is that FM is not a reliable source when it comes to judging players, just like YouTube montages, they only select the best bits
