Ezequiel Garay has no preferred choice of his next club after reports claimed Manchester United are now the favourites to sign the Racing Santander defender.

Barcelona had previously been expected to sign Garay in the summer for a fee in the region of £14million.

But reports suggest Barcelona no longer want to bring in the Argentine centre-half, prompting speculation that United are now leading the chase.

United scout Martin Ferguson has watched Garay in action on several occasions this season, while Juventus also hold an interest in the 21-year-old.

Garay is remaining calm regarding his future, but acknowledged his wish to play for a big club, if he is offered a move
I am calm," Garay told skysports.com. "These questions are for my agent and the club, but it is normal that I wish to progress in my career.

"If a big offer finally arrives, then I do not have a preference about a concrete destination."

Racing have insisted that no decision has been made to sell Garay, but the player's agent Ricardo Schlieper say it is merely a matter of money.

Schlieper told the Santander media: "Other big European clubs are also interested, but it is a simple money question.

"Santander desire the sale in the best conditions for the club."

He is back in the news (daily mail linking us to him) amazingly after a gap of 4.5 yrs. I found 4 threads when I searched for "Garay" and all dated to 2008 and before. Hope he has improved in these years to be good enough for UTD. He is 26yrs and believe in the perfect age group since we would be left with very young defenders if Rio leaves.

Anyone knows how good or bad he is?

He certainly fits into the right age group in terms of replacing an ageing Rio/Vidic and also adding experience to a backline of Evans/Smalling/Jones.

I remember him being linked with a lot of big clubs a few years ago and was surprised when he moved to Benfica.

I wouldn't say he flopped. They signed him from Santander in 2008, but he stayed there on loan for the season. Then he played 20+ games in 09-10 before Mourinho arrived. I can't remember how many times he played, but I know Jose didn't give him too many chances, so he ended up leaving.

We were really interested in him (according to the media at least) in the 2006-2008 time, back when he was at Racing. He was branded as a young goalscoring, ball playing Argentine defender. Haven't seen much of him in his Real days, and he rarely plays for Argentina (Can't be blamed for that though, as they have a huge selection of top class CBs)

Unless we have couple of more seasons out of Vidic, I think an experienced CB in the age group of 27-28 is needed to complement the young CBs we have. Only Smalling and Evans are the ones whom we can be confident about playing in the CB role. Jones has not been played there consistently enough to know how good or bad he is as a CB. So if Rio leaves in the summer we surely needed an established CB.
