Hope you enjoy and Jetzt geht's los.

Current Standings - Erste Bundesliga 2008/09

After Matchday 17, Hoffenheim top the table and continue their fairy tale season with Bayern in hot pursuit in second.
Juergen Klinsmann seems to have turned a corner with his Bavarian boys and have gotten a string of good results.

Hoffenheim are the so-called winter champions, which has traditionally been a good indicator of thing sto come, but they will have a gargantuan task of staving off Bayern and their stars.

Werder demolition job in Munich

Bremen issued the clearest possible signal of their title ambitions with this walloping of champions Bayern München on their own turf.

There was not much to cheer for Bayern as the Munich's famous Oktoberfest got underway, as a rampant Bremen side took them apart, winning 5-2 (2-0) after at one point leading 5-0. It was the biggest home defeat for FCB since losing 4-0 to Arminia Bielfeld back in March 1979.

Markus Rosenberg (30./67.), Naldo (45.), Mesut Özil (54.) and Claudio Pizarro (59.) fired Bremen onto easy street before former Werder man Tim Borowski got a late brace (71. /85.) for the outclassed home side.

Bremen on fire

Werder went on the offensvie from the start in front of a 69,000 crowd in the Allianz Arena against an out-of-sorts Bayern and could have taken the lead on 18 minutes, Pizarro lobbing narrowly wide.

They deservedly went in front on the half-hour mark, Mesut Ösil brilliantly splitting the home defence for Rosenberg to slot the ball past FCB keeper Michael Rensing. Minutes later it was 2-0, when Rensing pushed Özil's free-kick onto the feet of Naldo, who just had to knock the ball over the line.

Klinsmann rings changes

Bayern coach Jürgen Klinsmann brought on Borowski and Massimo Oddo at half time, but it just went from bad to worse for the home side. Diego put in Özil for number three, and Rosenberg set up Pizarro to make it 4-0. And it was not over yet. Rensing, having a truly bad day, dropped a Diego cross, leaving Rosenberg with the easiest of chances to make it five.

Bayern's two late strikes saved them from complete humiliation, but it still left them on the wrong end of a home defeat unparallelled in recent times.

Bayern Munich 2-5 Weder Bremen

Werder Bremen earned them an impressive 5-2 victory away to Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. Following a frustrating Champions League opener in midweek, the visitors took the game to Bayern and used a combination of tenacious defence and deadly finishing to go ahead 5-0 by the 67th minute.

It was clear sailing after that, although the home side were able to pull two back with a brace from Tim Borowski.

Some interesting results this weekend.

Besides Werder bremen's 2:5 thumping of Bayern Munich there were other eye-catching results:

Hamburg, who had been leading the table, were unceremoniously barged off the top after a 3-0 drubbing by VfL Wolfsburg.

An interesting fact about Wolfsburg is that the city was founded for the purpose of housing the workers who built the Volkswagen Beatle.

VfL Wolfsburg are sponsored by Volkswagen and are generally not very well liked amongst many German football purists, because they have a bit of a rap like Chelsea. Small team, small stadium, hardly any history, but rich owners, who can afford Felix Margath and the salaries of some demanding pros.

Another interesting result was newly-promoted Hoffenheim beating Dortmund 4:1.

Yes, you read correctly. The ones mighty Borrusia Dortmund have fallen on challenging times and are no longer the powerhouse they once were.

Hoffenheim are owned by spend-management solutions giant, SAP, and enjoy a good rap, because they have an Arsenal-like philosophy of cultivating the best young talent into stars.

And finally.....

Just to give you some updates from the second Bundesliga, my hometown team SC Freiburg are currently leading the second division table :D

Strikers to the fore
Freiburg romped to the top of the table in style, FSV Frankfurt bagged their first win of the season and Ingolstadt also came out on top at home. bundesliga.de has a round-up of all the Sunday action.

SC Freiburg - SV Wehen Wiesbaden 5-0 (1-0)

Freiburg maintained their 100 percent home record in impressive fashion, and more importantly moved to the top of the table with this trouncing of Wiesbaden.

Idrissou and Jäger do the business

Forward duo Mohamadou Idrissou (53., 83., 90.) and Jonathan Jäger (33., 64.) between them scored the goals for the home side, who could have won by an even higher margin if they had converted some of their numerous first-half chances.

For Wiesbaden, defeat leaves them anchored second from bottom on three points.

Freiburg were quick to establish control of the midfield, and in the wake of Jäger's opener hit the bar twice in quick succession, with a Heiko Butscher header (36.) and a Tommy Bechmann free-kick (40.).

The home side kept up the pressure after the break and were eventually rewarded in the hard currency of goals, with Idrissou wrapping up his hattrick right at the death.

Here are some updates:

Klinsmann tries to get up for cup

http://www.teamtalk.com/football/story/0,16368,7555_4180910,00.html

Jurgen Klinsmann has urged Bayern Munich to bounce back from their 5-2 Bundesliga thrashing when they host Nurnberg in the DFB-Pokal.

Club president Franz Beckenbauer advised Klinsmann to drown his sorrows after the humiliating home defeat to Werder Bremen with two litres of beer at the annual Oktoberfest celebrations, which began on Saturday, but the coach turned him down.

"I usually take his advice, but not this time," he said.

Klinsmann was in no mood for celebrations after the German champions conceded more than four goals for the first time in 32 years against a rampant Bremen outfit.

The 44-year-old could not afford a hangover on Sunday as he wanted to turn his attention immediately to the next challenge in the cup on Wednesday.

"The important thing when you are down on the ground is to get up as quickly as possible and show a reaction," he added.

"And we will certainly do that - maybe even stronger than before."

The cup holders struggled into the second round with a 4-3 win over Rot-Weiss Erfurt in Klinsmann's first game in charge since taking over from Ottmar Hitzfeld in the summer.

That set up a tie with second division side Nurnberg, who come into the game in a similar state of disarray after losing at Mainz on Friday.

"We have got to get a win really, really quickly," said their new coach Michael Oenning, who has yet to win a game since taking over from Thomas von Heesen earlier this month.

The first round of the DFB-Pokal was an upset-free affair with all 18 Bundesliga sides successfully coming through to the second round, but five top-flight teams will definitely be eliminated this week.

Energie Cottbus or Borussia Monchengladbach will be the first to go when they meet on Tuesday evening while Schalke or Hannover will follow later on Tuesday night.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, Bremen travel to Erzgebirge Aue and Cologne have a tricky tie at Mainz. Eintracht Frankfurt host Hansa Rostock with Bayer Leverkusen travelling to Augsburg.

One second division side is guaranteed a place in the third round on Tuesday when 1860 Munich host Duisburg at the Allianz Arena.

On Wednesday, Borussia Dortmund or Hertha Berlin will have to end their cup final dreams, as will either Hamburg or Bochum and Stuttgart or Arminia Bielefeld.

Wolfsburg will expect to defeat the lowest-ranked side left in the competition, FC Oberneuland, while Karlsruhe and Hoffenheim also face lower-league opposition in Offenbach and Freiburg respectively.

Wehen and Alemannia Aachen meet in another all-second division clash and Jena host FSV Frankfurt with another low-ranked side guaranteed a place in the last 16.

Dortmund apologise for fan abuse

http://www.teamtalk.com/football/story/0,16368,7555_4180862,00.html

Hans-Joachim Watzke has apologised to the owner of Hoffenheim for the abuse aimed towards him from Dortmund fans on Sunday.

Several Dortmund followers vented their frustration at their side's 4-1 defeat at Hoffenheim against the multi-millionaire owner of the Bundesliga newcomers Dietmar Hopp.

Dortmund general manager Watzke, who was sat just a few seats away from Hopp in their temporary home of Mannheim on Sunday, admitted he had felt very uncomfortable.

"What happened in Mannheim was embarrassing, shameful and unworthy," he said on the Westphalian club's website.

"We will do all we can to ensure people who no longer abide by the values of a BVB fan no longer damage BVB's reputation."

One fan held up a personally insulting banner against Hopp, whose millions have helped Hoffenheim from non-league obscurity into the Bundesliga recently.

He has already been identified and is likely to receive a ban from all stadia throughout Germany.

Mtchday 6

Bad week for the top dogs
Champions Bayern München went down to their second league defeat in a row, losing 1-0 at Hannover 96.

A week after being thrashed 5-2 at home by Bremen, FC Bayern lost out to a 23rd-minute goal from Szabolcs Huszti. It was the first home win against the Munich side in 20 years for Hannover.

Fighting performance

Bayern started the brighter of the two sides, but Hannover soon worked their way back into the game, and found themselves in front when Husti brilliantly converted a direct free-kick from 17 metres out.

The champions were looking increasingly out of sorts as the match progressed, with Ernesto Sosa and Tim Borowski providing little in the way of a creative impulse in the middle of the park.

Hannover hold out

Substitute Massimo Oddo went close from a free-kick on the stroke of half-time, but with chances few and far between Hannover were visibly growing in confidence.

FCB coach Jürgen Klinsmann brought on Franck Ribery after the break, but although Bayern stepped up the tempo they had little to show for it in concrete terms.

Hannover meanwhile were ever more willing just to sit back and counter-attack, and it almost paid off in the 75th minute, Mikael Forsell seeing his effort crash against the crossbar.

For my money, Werder Bremen is the most pure footballing team in the world today. And that's exactly why I'm one of their supporters. 5-4, another thrilling game. They are the exact polar opposite of Liverpool or Rangers.

Werder Bremen!

I have a soft spo for Werder Bremen, because I manage them in FM08. Just started a new campaign and I'm only two points behind Bayern. :)

I grew up near Freiburg, so they are my favourite German club.

Klinsman was/is apparently in for Landon Donovan! I hope Borussia Mongladbach can stay up as they signed Michael Bradley who's probably made the biggest impact for a European club that an American has ever made. He broke records at Herenveen in Holland and I hope he can continue!

Matchday 6 Results and Table

There were some very strange results in the Bundesliga this weekend, which saw some of the smaller clubs win against stronger opponents at home:

After Matchday 6, Martin Jol's Hamburger Sport Verein lead the Bundesliga, with Werder only 2 points behind and Bayern thankfully 5 points off the pace:

#20 ·
Werder Bremen got spanked 4-1 by VfB Stuttgart, while Bayern's recent poor form continued with a dramatic draw with VfL Bochum. Bochum scored twice to come back from 3-1 down.

After Match day 7, Hambrurg remain at the top of the Bundesliga with SAP-backed Hoffenheim and VfB Stuttgart only 3 points behind.

Eintracht Frankfurt and Borrusia Moenchengladbach bring up the rear with only 3 points each.

Bayern are 7 points off the pace in 11th place.

VfB Stuttgart spank Werder Bremen

Two days after struggling through to the group phase of the UEFA Cup, VfB Stuttgart turned on the style to whip a disappointing Bremen side 4-1.

Werder went into the game unbeaten in six and having scored ten goals in their last two league matches. But against one of their "favourite" opponents, the home side came up trumps once again.

VfB pressure

Sami Khedira got the ball rolling for Stuttgart in the 18th minute, latching onto a great pass from Cacau and moving past Bremen keeper Tim Wiese before slotting home. Christian Träsch made it 2-0 in the 29th minute with another great finish, rattling the ball into the corner of the net from 20 metres out for his first Bundesliga goal. Roberto Hilbert bagged number three (63.) before playmaker Diego pulled one back for Bremen from a direct free kick (65.). Martin Lanig put the icing on the cake with another goal for Stuttgart in the 88th minute.

Short on ideas and stamina

With Khedira and surprise pick Arthur Boka causing havoc on the flanks, VfB had the visitors under the cosh from the off. For their part, Bremen looked drained and uninspired in the wake of their excellent 1-1 midweek draw at Inter Milan in the Champions League.

At the start of the second half, Stuttgart passed up a clutch of chances to kill the game as a contest against a Werder defence at sixes and sevens in the absence of the suspended Per Mertesacker. Coach Armin Veh's decision to give the 21-year-old Träsch a start was, at any rate, certainly vindicated.

SC Freiburg remain top of the 2nd Bundesliga

Freiburg beat Duisburg, 1860 get back on track in Frankfurt and Oberhausen get the better of Augsburg. The Friday games in full:

SC Freiburg - MSV Duisburg 2-0 (1-0)

Freiburg are back on top of the 2. Bundesliga, until Sunday at least, thanks to a 2-0 victory over Duisburg courtesy of goals from Yacine Abdessadki (35.) and Julian Schuster (87.).

This one proved to be a real battle, with both teams going in hard in the tackle and chances initially at a premium. Newcomer Abdessadki's goal was indicative of the contest as a whole, a 25-metre pot-shot deflected by MSV defender Olivier Veigneau past keeper Marcel Herzog.

Little action

Duisburg pressed as best they could for the equaliser after the break, but the sum total of their efforts was a single 56th-minute chance, not taken, for Cedrick Makiadi.

Robin Dutt's Freiburg were content for the most part to sit on their narrow lead, but still found time to bag a second through Schuster in the dying minutes.

Some crazy results going around Europe this season, thats for sure.
Im happy for MArtin Jol being top of the table. I always liked him and felt he
got a raw deal. I bet he his laughing his ass off at Spurs and Levy right now,
and I bet Spurs are regretting their biggest mistake ever.

The players let him down badly, jazzy.

What is going on at Spurs is a typical example of how putting it an overtly corporate structure in a club, which does not have that kind of culture will muck things up.

Can you imagine fergie having to answer to a Director of Football?

Look at Madrid - their director of football is a former player and although they've ruled La Liga two seasons running, they have not been able to progress past the quarter-finals of the CL.

Their managerial merry-go-round is a shambolic circus and now we see the same thing happening at Spurs.

It's hillarious that HSV are top, while Spurs are rooted at the bottom and the main contributor of the dressing room unrest is now at Manchester United.

Under Martin Jol they got into Europe and yet they failed to believe in him when things got difficult. A thankless bunch - both fans and boardroom.

They deserve their plight.

Sammer still yearns for Dortmund
http://www.teamtalk.com/football/story/0,16368,7555_4299324,00.html

Former Borussia Dortmund coach Matthias Sammer admits he still feels a strong bond with the Bundesliga club he left four years ago.

The current technical director for the German Football Association (DFB) became the youngest coach in history to win the Bundesliga when he led Dortmund to the title in 2002 at the age of 34, but two years later, he left the club by mutual consent as they slipped down the table.

On Saturday, he returns to the Westfalen Stadion in his new capacity with the Germany national team and he admitted to the Bild newspaper that it will be an emotional occasion.

"There is no doubt that Dortmund is still something very special to me," he said.

"The yearning for this stadium never leaves you. For my tastes, the atmosphere here is the best, probably in the whole world."

Sammer got to taste the unique atmosphere of the imposing Westfalen Stadion both as a player and a coach and he would gladly turn back the clock to run out in front of 80,000 passionate fans once again.

He said: "Of course I get excited thinking about it - even if a long time has passed since the end of my career.

"You are somehow always left with a bit of Borussia and I had a fantastic time with BVB."

His "fantastic time" was also the most successful period in the Westphalian club's recent history and things have gone downhill since he left.

Only now does it appear that the club is gaining some positive momentum again and, under their new coach Jurgen Klopp, Sammer feels they can become a force once again.

"They can at least finish inside the top 10 this year," he predicted.

"They club has rediscovered some stability after some difficult years financially and in the mid-term, BVB have got to get back into Europe."

After Matchday 8, Martin Jol's Hamburger SV still lead the Bundesliga with traditional giants Werder Bremen and Bayern Munich both on 12 points in 10th and 11th place respectively.

This might seem like a big gap, but HSV are only 5 points ahead on 17 points and I expect the big boys to cut that lead shortly.

SAP-owned Hoffenheim had a brilliant game and thumped hapless Hannover 96 2-5 away from home.

The emphatic result leaves Hoffenheim in 2nd place, 1 point behind leaders HSV.

A hallmark of this season in the Bundesliga has been the smaller teams standing their ground at home and getting some shock results which must be fabulous for the bookies.

Results:

Table:

Hamburger SV ended matchday 8 on top of the table, but they missed out on the win against Schalke 04 that would have moved them three points clear.

HSV draw to go top

The two sides played out a 1-1 draw, a result which leaves HSV one point ahead of closest challengers Hoffenheim, with Schalke dropping to sixth.

Drama at the death

Werder Bremen and Borussia Dortmund have shared six goals in an incredible Bundesliga match.

42.100 Zuschauern in the sold out Weserstadion had seen a rather eventless first half.

Thomas Schaaf's team had a lot of possession, but they couldn't turn it into goal-scoring opportunities against a Dortmund team that defended deep and well.

Baumann involved at both ends

Alexander Frei opened the scoring for BVB from the penalty spot after 59 minutes. Frank Baumann had brought down Nelson Valdez.

Baumann made up for that by heading a 68-minute equaliser, but Borussia regained the lead four minutes later through Mats Hummels.

Naldo was unlucky with a header against the bar with 13 minutes left, but Werder were not to be denied.

Late drama

Claudio Pizarro scored after 88 minutes to level the scores, and he was on target again three minutes later to give Werder Bremen a 3-2 lead.

The victory? No! Former Werder player Mohamed Zidan replied deep into injury time to secure a 3-3 draw for Borussia Dortmund.
