Sky Sports | Football | Premier League | News | Gerrard lands yearly award

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has been voted the 2009 Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers' Association.

The 28-year-old England international topped the poll of journalists ahead of Manchester United duo Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney to win the prestigious accolade, which has been running since 1948.

Gerrard, who has led the Reds' challenge to United for the Premier League title, will receive his award at the FWA's gala dinner at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London on 29th May.

Chairman of the FWA Steve Bates said: "Steven's performances this season have been of the highest quality.

"His drive and desire have underpinned Liverpool's Premier League title challenge and ensured a tight finish to the season.

"Steven is clearly in his prime and quite rightly rated one of the finest midfield players of his generation, and the FWA are delighted to honour his contribution to club and country."

No mention of Vidic at all which was surprising. He would have been the first defender since Steve Nicol in 1989 to win it.

Also, if 23 goals so far is enough to win it, where does Ronaldo come in this?

How come its only Gerrard that can be embroiled in a bar fight, and days later no one ever mentions it? It's an absolute disgrace, the blokes supposed to be a role model. The biggest disgrace of all of it is that Liverpool didn't change the captaincy. Why don't they loan Marlon King and make Joey Barton vice captain while their at it?

He's only been charged over that incident. Innocent until proven guilty:thumbsup: Plus it wouldnt be a very positive message to be sending out if they took the captaincy off him right after backing their man.

Off the field issues dont count when it comes to these awards. Its what they do on the pitch that matters. He has been impressive this season but still think Vidic should have got it.

Am, what?

It's his bloody personal life and to be fair you haven't a clue what happened in that pub. I haven't read one shred of evidence that says Gerrard threw a punch. It was his mates that gave the guy a hiding, not him. It really should be his football we should be concerned about in deciding these awards. As for stripped him of the captaincy, you're having a laugh, right? He's one of the dippers greatest ever captains. He has dung them out of so much *****. He could rape all the women in Liverpool and the fans would still love him.

I don't have any problem with Gerrard winning this Award either.
He's had a brillant season for Liverpool and deserves to be up there. But it's harly surprising the writers voted him winner of this Award as they all seem to praise the lad constantly.
The thing I find odd about this is the fact that Vidic didn't get a mention. He's been absolutely brillant this season and for me it was only between him and Gerrard for this Award really.
Still from what I hear he finished 4th in the list.
Also good to see Rooney and Giggs up there, but I still don't agree with Vidic being left out.

Fair result, he has been the best player this season. It was a joke that Giggs got the PFA award and in the running for this award, sentimental bullcrap. Give him a lifetime achievement award or hall of fame, but don't try and fool people into thinking he has been one of the best players this season, not by a longshot. He hasn't even been United's best player.

Not been better than Vidic. Lampard gets no shout either. Typical favoritism to that horrible diving hypocrite.
