Manchester United chief executive David Gill has indicated the Red Devils' triple transfer swoop could mark the end of their significant summer outlay.

United have confirmed England international Owen Hargreaves will join them from Bayern Munich on July 1, with only the 25-year-old's signature required to complete a £17million deal.

The news came less than 24 hours after transfers were agreed 'in principle' for outstanding young duo Anderson and Nani, who were captured from FC Porto and Sporting Lisbon respectively following a hectic day of negotiations in Portugal by Gill and Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant Carlos Queiroz.

Although the total initial outlay of around £40million is the most significant investment since Malcolm Glazer's controversial takeover in 2005, it was still felt there would be more to come as Ferguson looks to bolster his striking options.

Samuel Eto'o, Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Dimitar Berbatov and Jermain Defoe have all been linked with the Old Trafford outfit over the past few days.

However, while Gill refused to totally rule out more new arrivals, he hinted strongly the Premier League champions' major business had now been done.

"We will see what happens over the next two or three months but by and large that will be the major element of our business," Gill told MUTV.

"If a player comes up that Sir Alex is convinced will make us better, I am sure we will find the funds but that is a major bit of business we have done this week."

In 19-year-old Anderson, who is part of Brazil's Copa America squad, and Nani, the 20-year-old who is already a Portugal international and earned favourable comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo, whom United also signed from Sporting Lisbon, United are clearly looking to the future.

Hargreaves though is a signing for now, the Red Devils completing a deal Ferguson hoped he would force through before the start of last season.

The Calgary-born players left no-one in any doubt he wanted to make the move, only for Bayern to block the deal fearing supporter unrest after losing Michael Ballack to Chelsea.

Ferguson was hopeful of resurrecting the deal in January but those plans were scuppered when Hargreaves - who has family which hails from Bolton - broke his leg on club duty against Armenia Bielefeld in September.

However, there was little doubt the United boss was determined to push the transfer through once the season was over and Bayern's failure to qualify for next year's Champions League only made it more certain Hargreaves would end up at Old Trafford.

"It is no secret that we tried to get Owen last summer," reflected Gill.

"We tried again in January but to no avail. Thankfully, we have managed to secure him now and we are delighted with that.

"It is good business for us, good business for Bayern Munich and good business for Owen. He is a great signing."

Hargreaves' arrival should help take some of the weight off Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick, who shouldered most of the midfield responsibilities last term.

Neither Anderson nor Nani can expect to play as many games as their fellow new arrival, although if either man shows the type of form Ronaldo produced when he first landed at Old Trafford four years ago, it will not be long before they are providing stiff competition for the likes of Ryan Giggs, who has quit international football in order to prolong his United career.

Queiroz said: "It is really worth stopping to imagine what an attack formed by Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani and Anderson could do.

"They are players who blend creativity and magic into football.

"It really is wonderful to be able to mould and enhance their capabilities.

"I have always worked with players in this formative process and this is a significant investment in Manchester United prospects for the next 10 years."

I heard we are looking to buy Anelka as he only would cost £8 million. What do you think of this. Id be happy enough with him especially at that price. He has pace, power and is an excellent finisher. If we dont get the 15-30 million for a Torres or Eto'o etc or if we cant even sign these players then I would be very happy with Anelka.

I agree with you, I think the likes of Torres and Eto'o will cost in the region of 20Mil+ and i cant see us spending that after spending 50mil in the 48Hours. But if i remember correctly was the 17mil for Hargreaves not kept from last year, cos David Gill said that the money will be kept for Owen. So if that is the case we have spend around 34-35mil. Anelka would be a good signing if its true. I do think Fergie will bring in another striker before 31th August

where did you get this information?jazz 16
i read it in the english and irish newspapers today. Not sure how much turth is in it but it seems as though Fergie has made enquiries so we shall just have to wait and see.

Arbucks, Im not sure if the OH money was set aside from last year so it will be interesting to see if we get Anelka for $8million or we have 20-30 for eto'o or torres. Personally i would prefer Berbatov fisrt, Eto'o second and then Anelka. I think he would do better than Tevez and Torres at United. So money or no money we need a great striker and Im sure Fergie will bring one in. One of the above would do very nicely.

tru we may not spnd that much i rekon he probz has around £10 mill left...therefore he cud raise anuva 15 himself form plpayer sales such as shaha for around 7 mill...Henize 5 mill...n Richardson 3mill...we dnt wana c Heinze go but looks like it is going to happen and tht wud mean we hav around 25 mill which is enuf 2 sign alomost any1 apart frm Eto'o or Berbatov bcz they wud cost alot more... i wud not be expecting the striker to cmome soon tho as the money is limited now so he will want to look into this with depth and make a decision proply on a player but i read a report earlier today that he wanted to hav talks with huntelaar about a move...before amking a bid to Ajax

Cheers Arbucks. Been looking at that site for a few weeks now. Think you had suggested it before. Its probably the best site out there for up to date info.

I like and admire Smith as a player but I feel that he may need to move on for his own sake. If we could get Berbatov in a deal for Smith and x milllion I would have to say Id be very happy with that. Berb is just pure class. He ran the show for Spurs this season. If he was getting the supply at Spurs that he would get at United he would be a 30 goal a season machine.

Good point Mux. There will be players leaving. Hopefully Richardson will go. I think Fergie has had enough of Saha and Gaby will go too I think. He has been a great warrior for us but I think his time has come. I hadnt really thought of raising the money through player sales so your right we could hold out for a bit and see what happens. The money could be there but the more I think of Anelka the better it sounds. I think he could be a great player for United.

Erm...yh under fifa regualtions any1 hu has seen otu 3 years of their contract cn buy themselves out of the rest of the contract...

Tbh tho i rlee dont wana c Anelka at our club he was a great talent at arsenal buh then he moved away for money and then failed so wah is it for him to do the sme to only go to man u for money and then not bother again i wud rather see young huntelaar come in trying to prove his worth at the top of european scale with his hunger and goal scorning threat...or the proven F. Torres (xcept this season)...Anelka plus played for arsenal R Madrid n man city sum our greatest rivals....wudnt b right having him i dnt feel...

4 good reasons lol.
Good point I have to say. I get drawn into the speculation about these strikers and get carried away with myself :) I guess Ill be pleased whoever comes in since we have already scored big in the transfer market. Yep I agree that Huntelaar is an exciting talent. If he signed Id be happy, If Torres signed Id also be happy. If Eto'o .......happy, If Anelka.......happy
Basically Its great being a United fan right now. We have no worries, there is nothing to moan about. Quite strange really :-z

Yeah thats something we can moan about. Just hope its a nice strip not that I wont buy it regardless of what it looks like. We are suckered like that but we all buy them anyway. Part and parcel of being a fan I guess. The strip John777 put up looked pretty nice. I liked it a lot. I always play better football with a nice new United shirt on me.

Owen , Nani and Anderson are good deals. but i hope they don't deal with Anelka. He's old and not a manchester type. we need someone like Berbatov who cost not so much, Eto' is expensive and so vila and torres, but Huntelaar is a not. selling saha and smith are good news. but Heinze ... i hope he stays. we should sell Silvester.
