Bundesliga club Hamburg have claimed that Manchester City have secured the signing of defender Vincent Kompany.

Belgium centre-back Kompany arrived at HSH Nordbank Arena from Anderlecht in 2006, and has since been regularly linked with a move to England after demonstrating impressive form at domestic and international level.

A number of Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, were believed to be interested in Kompany, however Hamburg have announced that the 22-year-old has agreed to join Mark Hughes' City.

Hamburg sports director Dietmar Beiersdorfer told the club's official website: "We wish Vincent all the best for his sporting future."

Kompany's future at Hamburg has been in doubt in recent days after reports he fell out with club bosses over his continued involvement for Belgium at the Olympic Games.

Hamburg had ordered Kompany to return from Beijing in time for their first Bundesliga game of the season last Friday despite Belgium's progression to the final four.

His appearance in the season-opening fixture against Bayern Munich now appears set to be 39th and last for the club.

City Sign Kompany From Hamburg

Although Hamburg's official website does not carry details of the deal, it is understood that the two clubs have agreed a fee for the 22-year-old.

Kompany has been at Hamburg for the past two seasons, but has failed to make the expected impression since landing from Anderlecht.

Kompany was rated as one of Europe's brightest prospects when he moved from his homeland to the Bundesliga, however, he has not set the German top divison alight.

His club were far from impressed earlier this summer when Kompany reneged on an agreement to return from his country's Olympic bid.

Hamburg had permitted the centre-back to feature in Belgium's first two outings, however, he contrived to have himself sent off in the first against Brazil, thereby ruling him out of the second against hosts China.

The Belgian FA were not in accordance with Kompany's decision to remain in China with the under-23 panel past the accepted deadline, and he was forced to return to his club.

He played last week in the 2-2 Bundesliga opening-day draw with Bayern Munich, however, he now seems to have played his last game for the club.

Manchester City have now reportedly lodged a bid on his services, and a deal may be pushed through before the weekend.

Hamburg's director of football Dietmar Beiersdorfer said: ."We wish Vincent all the best for his future."

Haven't seen him too much so I'm not going to comment.

But its a great coup if they pull this move off and it works. Hes still only young, so will adapt quicker and have more time to play in the Prem. That is, of course, if hes good enough for the Prem.

Official: City Sign Kompany

Yes its official: City have Pipped Manutd to secure the services of Kompany.. lmao :D

Kompany, 22, emerged as a transfer target for the Citizens in the past week and the move has been completed this afternoon, the club have confirmed.

The Belgian international is part of the Olympics team that is currently contesting for the bronze medal against Brazil, two goals down with half an hour remaining.

The defender, who can also play in defensive midfield and has been mooted to play there for City, has signed a four-year contract at Eastlands, for a fee rumoured to be in the region of €10 million.

The signing will go some way towards appeasing City fans who have grown frustrated with rumours of internal unrest and financial woes surrounding owner Thaksin Shinawatra.

The club are hopeful that Kompany, who has been capped over 20 times for Belgium, can gain international clearance in time to debut this weekend against West Ham United.

"Manchester City can confirm the signing of Belgian international defender Vincent Kompany from Bundesliga side Hamburg SV on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee," read a statement on the club's official website.

"It is hoped Vincent will receive all the relevant clearance to be able to feature in Sunday's home clash with West Ham United."

I think this is a good buy for City... Might take some time to adjust though... Anyone think Hughes will make any more eye-catching signings?

I've heard a lot of good things about Kompany.

With Richards, Dunne, Kompany and Corluka (unless he goes to Spurs) they've got some quality defenders to choose from.
Ohonua (sp?) and Garrido arent too bad either.
They've got some very good defenders but judging by Saturdays result they didn't show it. lol
