First goal Van Nistelrooy was half a light year offside and the ref must have been in another stadium!

EDIT: I've just realised. Pannucci was out of the field of play HOWEVER the ref hadn't stopped play so technically Pannucci was still

an active player playing Nistelrooy onside even though he was off the field. Opinions differs but I say Van Goal was onside.

It's good to see Italy exeriencing the other side of dodgy ref decisions. *COUGH* WC 2006 Round of 16 Australia Penalty my Foot.

Man Italy were furious. The couldn't complain about the second and thirds goals though. I take back every comment I've ever made

about Wesley Sneijder being over hyped. I thought he was decent. He's spec - blooming - tacular! Wesley Sneijder take a bow.

The two matches in the group of death have completely stuffed my fantasy foootball.I was 1 944 overall which is pretty impressive

but I had four Italian and French players and now I've dropped a fair bit. :( Oh well small price to pay. :) Italy were humiliated.

The French match was pretty in line with expectations upon reflection. Go Romania! :)

P.S. Here is an amusing pic of Domenech looking like an utterly bemused old man baffled by whatever he was seeing unfold in front of him.

Actually the Ruud goal has 2 interpretations.

1) The defender was off the field of play, and was ruled injured by the ref. The goal wouldn't stand because he is no longer the last defender.

2) The player is deemed not injured and thus last defender. Also, the ref could give a card for leaving the field of play without his authority.

Either way, its debatable and doesnt really matter because the Oranje netted 2 more goals !!!!
Nothing wrong with seeing the French draw and Italians lose. Great day!

I said i was going for Holland to win EURO 2008 because i like the colour orange.
Put my vCash on Italy and was happy to lose it.

Better result was France v Romania.
No way could i see a 0 - 0 result,
thought 2 or 3 - 0 for France, maybe an
odd goal from Romania.

A rubbish and boring match imo, but the
result kicked the French in the teeth for sure.

I think this is probably the toughest of all the
groups and will be the most interesting to watch
and see how it finnishes.

Prediction..

Holland.
Romania.
?????????

the first orange gol is scandalous, but, watching the match, Holland has deserved to win, Italy has played the worst match of the last years, the defence was embarrassing, no team in the world leaves Cassano and Del Piero out, Italy without ideas, only Pirlo....I hope this defeat can wake up our players, we are world champion, bust last night we have forgotten this fact....

I'll say this about Italy. Regardless of Toni's lacklustre performance in National colours Di Natale played well and Pirlo was also impressive. If Del Piero had started alongside Cassano With Camoranesi, Pirlo and maybe even Di Natale playing as a left winger it could have been a different match.

Keith Hackett, the Premier League referee's chief, says it was a legitimate goal. Panucci slid off the pitch after colliding with his own player, Buffon, and was not receiving treatment and therefore was still active.

It was a masterclass of counter attacking football by the Dutch - the 2nd and 3rd goals came so quickly after the Italians had nearly scored at the other end that their defence had no time to get back into position.

A stunning result and one that throws the group wide open after Romania's impressive, and tbh boring, draw against France.

Panucci was out of the pitch, injured, didn't watch the action.....How can you consider his position active? However, Italy has deserved to lose..... :(

They are saying that he had not been given permission to leave the field for treatment by the referee so was still active.

11.4.1. of the refereeing code states...

"an opposing player cannot be offside when one of the last two defenders has left the field of play"

This is to prevent defenders hopping off the pitch to play attackers offside. In this case it was unfortunate because, as you say, Panucci was injured after the collision with Buffon so could not get back on. However, his teammates should have been aware of the rules and not have been trying to play offside in that situation.

damned refereeing code states :D
However this norm is right for the reason you have explained, but is a dangerous norm, every time a player goes out of the field of play like panucci, offside disappears...it is also true that referee cannot know if player is really injured or he is getting cute....
So....damned refereeing code states -- :D :D :D
Donadoni, wake up!

It's unfortunate for Pannucci and Italy but, in my opinion, the ruling that Pannucci was still active is correct.

It's Pannucci & Buffon's fault for crashing into each other. Pannucci wasn't injured and even if he was it was his own teammate.

You couldn't stop the game because of that since the Netherlands were in a scoring position.

It would be an even more dangerous norm if any player including the goal keeper could step behind the line of play and prevent a goal
