Inter have joined the race to sign Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich according to Sportmediaset.

The Nerazzurri are keen on adding some strength in midfield and Jose Mourinho has already picked out a number of possible transfer targets including Frank Lampard and Ricardo Quaresma.

The former Chelsea coach would prefer to sign the Porto star but Sportmediaset claims that Inter's relationship with the Portuguese club is not the best and that Mourinho has identified Bastian Schweinsteiger as an alternative should the move for Quaresma fail.

The German international raised a few eyebrows during Euro 2008 and Inter's bitter rivals Juventus are believed to have shown an interest in the player and thus an exciting battle for the player could be on the horizon.

The Bianconeri, like Inter, are currently wheeling and dealing for a midfielder and Claudio Ranieri is likely to pull out all the stops in order to land the German star.

Bayern are willing to sell their player now as they would risk losing him on a Bosman ruling next year. Schweinsteiger recently admitted that he would be interested in a move to Serie A but it remains to be seen just where he will end up.
