Inter Milan to remain unbeaten for whole season?

Since World War Two, only one team in Italy has ever won the Scudetto, having not lost for the whole campaign.

That was in 1991/92, when a team containing legends such as Franco Baresi, Paolo Maldini and the three Dutchman Rijkaard, Van Basten and Gullit, went on an unprecedented 58-match streak without defeat.

There have been a number of great Serie A teams in the past, ‘Grande Torino' in the 1940s, ‘Grande Inter' in the 1960s, Trapattoni's Juventus in the 1970s and 80s, Sacchi's Milan in the late 1980s, and Lippi's Juve in the 1990s – these all failed to replicate what Capello and Milan did in 91-92.

In 1978-79 the unfashionable Perugia, led in attack by a young Paolo Rossi, did not lose a single game, however after drawing 19 of their 30 games, they were pipped to the Scudetto by AC Milan in Gianni Rivera's final season at the club.

So can Inter repeat what their city cousins Milan did 16 years ago and stay unbeaten this season?

As we now enter into the winter break, Inter are seven points clear at the top, having won 13 and drawn four of their 17 matches. They have scored a whopping 37 goals, and conceded just nine – a quite devastating array of statistics.

I have to agree with the comments made last week by World Cup winning-boss Marcello Lippi, who said that currently Inter are “invincibleâ€.

When you consider the midfield injury crisis that Inter have had to cope with in losing Patrick Vieira, Luis Figo, Olivier Dacourt and Dejan Stankovic for long spells, the fact that they have stayed so dominant shows just how strong their squad is.

In the past I have been critical of Inter over how they became so dominant – and I do not change my stance at all on this. The truth is that the Nerazzurri are only the force they are today because of the Calciopoli scandal, and there are rumours circulating in Italy that suggest that we have not heard the end of that saga – which could be bad news for Massimo Moratti and Inter.

Nevertheless I am sure that all true football fans, be them followers of Juventus, Milan or any other club, will admit that Inter really are looking “invincible†at the moment.

They certainly won't ever get a better chance than now to go through an entire
Serie A campaign unbeaten.
