Is Alex Ferguson as good a manager as he has been built up to be, the facts may suggest otherwise. The success of the 90's was built upon alot of players that came through the youth team, Beckham, the Neville's, Butt, Giggs, Scholes etc. Such a youth team will probably never be seen again, so Fergie was extremely lucky in that respect.

During the 90's, there was not really any teams in the Premier League that had the players to compete with us,in the late 90's Arsenal gave us competition but apart from them who was there. Lets be honest, in 99 we had an outrageous amount of luck. If Bergkamp had scored that penalty in the FA Cup semi final we would have been knocked out, in the same game if Viera had not played a terrible pass to Giggs, he would not have scored that wonder goal. We were totally outplayed in the Champions League final, Bayern should of scored three of four goals.

I have to call into question our consistent failure in europe, with the teams that Fergie has had to work with one trophie has to go down as a major failure. In the match against Porto, Man Utd had better players than Porto but Fergie was tactically outcoached by Mourinho. Our humiliation in the San Siro against an ageing Milan happened simply because our squad was nowhere near strong enough.

I also have to call into question Fergies transfer dealings, he has consistently fallen out with key players and sold them to the detriment of the team, Beckham, Stam, Van Nistelrooy, Keane, etc. He has made some truly terrible signings, 36 year old Blanc, Veron for £30m, djemba, liam miller, forlan, kleberson, Saha, Taibi, Van Der Gouw, Fortune, Smith and many others.

The significant improvement in the quality of the players we have signed recently has been almost exclusively down to the influence of Carlos Quieroz, who's portugese links have enabled us to sign players like Ronaldo, Nani, Anderson and the soon to arrive Manucho. Arsene Wenger recently stated in an interview that Ronaldo was at Arsenal being shown around, but it was Utd's ties to Sporting which Quieroz was responsible for that enabled us to sign him ahead of Arsenal.

I am not saying that Fergie does not deserve any credit, of course he does. But lets not go over the top by saying he is the best manager in history. Fabio Capello has achieved much more in Europe than Fergie.

superguy, you appear to be having a problem with anything and everything to do with United. You are ultra critical and I strongly suspect an Anfailed fan. I think I will be having a closer look at you, shortly ;) The evil eye of the Red Devil is upon you.

Fergie just can't win with some people.

Some criticise him for not bringing through more young talent since Beckham, Scholes, Neville etc and you're calling him lucky for bringing through those young players all at the same time!!!

Fergie took a huge risk by believing in those players and selling stars such as Hughes and Ince. As Hansen said 'You'll never win anything with kids.' but he proved the doubters wrong.

Even though we were initially hindered by the foreigner rule, Fergie has never made excuses and admitted that his record in Europe is not good enough. That's why he has added so much depth to the midfield this season in the hope of having a good enough squad to compete in the Champions League.

All the top managers have made mistakes in the transfer market - Wenger, who is famous for his eye for young talent, wasted millions on Reyes and Jeffers. What about Fergie's successes like bringing in Schmeichal, Solskjaer, Keane, Cantona etc?

I wouldn't say Fergie is the greatest manager of all-time but he has to be up there. His achievements with Aberdeen and Manchester United have been exceptional...and there's still more to come.

Superguy maybe had to think long and hard about this thread ...

And eventually managed to struggle in with 17 lines of criticisms of Fergie ...

Some are maybe warranted - some are completely ridiculous ...

But imagine if someone were to put as much time and effort into writing a thread
about Fergies successes and victories and all the good time !!!

Forget 17 little lines - the good things would overload our server, lmao ....

Enough said really ... ;)

i cant believe as a united fan you are saying this. can i just summerise everything by saying

name me another manager that has won the premier league, the F.A cup and the champions league in one season. Of Course it takes luck but you wont see Everton doing it with a bit of luck cause they simply aint good enough. Fergie built united into what it is today. he was one game away from losing his job and then turned this club into the biggest football icon in the world. i just cba to finish this post cause it could go on for hours on what his achieved
