Well I believe he is up there with the very best.
As we saw with Petr Cech yesterday, ALL keepers make mistakes,
his mistake cost his country an appearance in the Euro Quarters though...ouch.

Edwin is legendary and top notch and has done it all nearly.....

Id have Iker Cassilas as the best in the World, closely followed by
Buffon adn then Edwin/Cech......would be similar enough.

VDS doesnt have many years left in him....but he is an extraordinary keeper.
Glad we have him.

I think Buffon is the best goalkeeper in the World but on form over the last season or 2 Casillas is certainly up there alongside him.

VDS has had a wonderful career and is one of the best keepers in the World but I wouldn't say he is THE best.

Why should/shouldnt VDS be rated the best keeper in the world?
2 prem titles back to back, champion l. or will VDS have to win euro with holland?

Hmm.... I'm not sure you set out your question in a good way.
If ability is measured by titles, does that make Wes Brown the best right back in the world?

VDS is one of the top keepers in the world, but not the best. Why?

Because there are other keepers who have better reflexes, safer pair of hands and are better at coming for crosses.

I'm not saying VDS is not class, I'm just answering your question with a 'no'.

Keepers I rate ahead of VDS

1. Iker Casillas
2. Gianluigi Buffon
3. Peter Cech
4. Hugo Lloris
5. Oscar ustari

That glaring mistake aside, Peter Cech is still the best keeper in the prem, even if the golden gloves have been won by Pepe Reina three seasons in a row. More proof that awards aren't definitive proof of ability.

Hugo Lloris has just signed for Lyon and he is really a very good keeper with great potential.

I know he hasn't won anything yet and I can already anticipate the criticism, but on ability I rate him, as well as Ustari higher than VDS. I hope that Lloris is groomed really well at Lyon, so that Man Utd can buy him in a couple of seasons.

Remember where you read it. :)

how do you know so much about these guys who have obviously never played at the highest level of football.. I don't mean to be cheeky but is this a 'football manager' or you tube assumption or do you follow French and Argentinian football very closely.. even if you have seen them up close you cant rate them higher than VDS, the guy has been playing at the highest level his whole career (Fulham exception although still in the prem)

I always say name the keepers better than VDS and you'll get a v short list.. obv Casillias and Buffon, but they're at their peak now.. Cech I'm no longer convinced by, Given when he's fit is up there with any1!

these two other guys I'm not buying it, Jardel scored 40 goals a season at a lower level of football, that didnt put him up with the best strikers in the world...

I think he's as good as Buffon and Casillas.
I can't think of many areas to his game that
he could improve on. He went through some
dodgy spells, like when he kept punching shots
out to oncoming strikers (first Roma game 2006/2007
and portsmouth game straight after it), then towards
the end of last season his kicking suddenly turned crap
and he was a liability. I remember Fergie mouthing to
Vidic to not pass back to Edwin :p

Every goalkeeper goes through bad spells just like
players in every other position, but he's been very
reliable for us and is one of the reasons why we've
conceded so few goals in the last two seasons. Best
we've had since Schmeichel by a country mile.

The most brilliant piece of football analysis I ever heard was in this wonderful quote. It's a shame I can't remember who said it. He said:

"There's this popular myth in football that the best goalkeepers are the ones who make the most mind boggling, spectacular saves. That's not true.
Those keepers are very good but the truly great keepers position themselves so well that they rarely, if ever, have to make an athletic save.
They simply force the striker into a situation where they can only shoot straight at the keeper."

Now I'm a huge Casillas fan and personally I like and respect him more than Buffon BUT on the above rationale I'm forced to admit that the

title of "Best Keeper in the World" is firmly a two horse race between Van De Sar and Buffon. I believe that Buffon wins by a whisker.

However there is another way of looking at the situation in which you realise that Buffon has always counted on a rock solid Italian defence protecting him.

He's spent a great deal of his career guarded by Cannavaro, Thuram, Nesta, Maldini & Materazzi. Casillas relies on a defence with gaps you could sail the titanic through.

Without Cannavro and Nesta Buffons been having a rough time of it at the Euro's. Meanwhile despite an aging Puyol, Casillas has performed strongly.

Overall I would take Van De Sar as my first choice and Casillas as my second. I think Buffon is way too intense for my liking.

Erm....... the simple fact is that goal keepers HAVE to make reaction saves. No matter how good you position yourself, there will always be attempts from distance or deflected shots or even the ball coming off the post/crossbar and into the path of an attacker.

So there are keepers, who can do what Edwin does but have more in other departments.

Again, he's a class keeper and I'm not saying otherwise. I'm just saying that he is starting to show signs of declining. His kicking was suspect in the back end of the season, he was flapping at crosses, bull-dozing team mates when coming out for high balls and not catching balls properly.

He still is making some great saves, but I think there are better keepers out there who could give our defence more confidence and make us harder to beat, so I don't think he's the world's best or even in the top 3.

Ya that was very odd,.. I reckon he was carrying a slight injury or something because his Kicking has never been a problem before.. He's a class act, Fostert has a lot to live up to if he's gonna save a few quid on a new Goalkeeper

I agree. Ustari is fantastic on football manager ;) but I don't think many will of heard of him nore seen him play so cannot be rated above VDS.

I think Casillas, Buffon and Cech are the three best keepers. But VDS is a very good keeper.
