Gazza Arrested Under Mental Health Act

Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne has been arrested under the Mental Health Act.

The former Newcastle, Spurs and Lazio midfielder was arrested at the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead last night and sectioned under the Mental Health Act.
His family has told Sky News that the former footballer called police himself and that the incident is "a cry for help".

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Police attended the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead yesterday evening after we received a report of concern for a 40-year-old man staying at the hotel.

"The man was detained under the Mental Health Act and no one was injured during the incident."

The Mental Health Act is used when a person is considered to be a danger to themselves or to others.

I'm concerned for Gazza and hope he recovers as well as he can. I understand that when he was a young lad he watched one of his best friends die in his arms and many have attributed his drinking problem to not wanting to face the reality of what happened.

Although I have to say that it's hard to feel too much sympathy for him because of the wife beating - some things are unforgivable, but I prefer to think of Gazza the footballer because he was a genius on the pitch.

The Hilton, Gateshead, is only a two minute walk from my house.

You have to feel sorry for gazza, well I do anyway.
I read one of his books, the one about all his problems: drink, drugs, OCD amongst many other things that have ruined his life.
I hope he recovers from this.

Paul Gascoigne has been sectioned on the mental health act. This means that he is officially a loony.

Whilst he was an immense talent, he, like Best before him, let fair weather friends pump up his ego to gargantuan proportions, then left him wallowing in beer!

Gascoigne, now 40, has suffered from alcohol abuse for many years now. He was treated for pneumonia and last year underwent emergency surgery for a perforated stomach ulcer after being taken ill as he was celebrating his 40th birthday.

I do not feel sorry for him, its self induced, but he could have had better counsel.

oh c'mon mate---that's direspectful - you don't know anything about his problems, childhood and stuff- I always try to look at it this way - imagine if my kid had same problems and i hear someone saying those things to him.. it's an illness, drinking that is. it's not his choice for being addicted...Or maybe it is his choice but you can't make a mockery out of his bad choices... You haven't had any mistakes in your life mate ? He searched for help - that 's a good sign . Just because you haven't had many bad choices in your life till now it doesn't mean you wont . And it wouldn't help you experience the same treatment if it happened to you . You can't treath another man's bad state like that ! i'm surprised with your statements mate..you're probably angry and stuff but that's not the way to go

No I am not angry and I have watched Gazza since he was a youngster starting out. His ego got too big for him and he was often seen binge drinking (he invented it) - believe me I do know what I am talking about. I have seen him on chat shows before taken for a complete monkey. He slurred his speech, kept laughing at himself and at others and this was when he was still playing. You do not know this person, only what you have possible heard, I have lived it - he was a constant embarrassment to ticket paying fans who tended not to see his other side because he scored a good goal now and then.

I am not disrespectful, the guy was an idiot.

it's not his choice for being addicted.
Really!!! Then who is at fault? There is only one person to point at. If I go out to the pub and get blitzed, its my fault and my fault only!!

the gus was an idiot, true - but haven't you heard the phrase (which is totally transparent in his example )"what goes around comes around" ( maybe it sets you an example )...you don't know why he started drinking i meant--- you don't know his story - it's not his fault he hasn't been thought to make the right choices ( just like drugs - it starts when you're a teenager... once you sober up- it's too late - you've become addicted ) - it could happen to everyone - no man is born evil .. Oh and -The guy is still an idiot - but a sick one

but if you started doing it when being 12 - then it's not !!! and you said it yourself - he could have had better counsil-- i stick to that - you have to lead a young person, show him the right choices, the right examples

CRO - I do know the guy, I have live alongside him as a football fan.

I got blitzed when I was about 18 or 19. I felt so bad I said never again, and didn't.

Gazza could not say NO! Yes, Gazza is a sick one, and his treatment will be paid for by the public. There is a growing element in our society that states that self induced illness treatment should not be on the NHS (the state), smoking is one example, alcoholism is another. WE will pay for his treatment amd I do not agree.

He had so called friends around him, like this well known "Seven Bellies" who constantly were plying him with drink that Gazza was paying for.

Football is also to blame - the superstar factor and blind hero worship of people who do not even understand the terminology behind the word "hero". Gazza is not a hero either.

that's what i'm i'm trying to point out - could not...doesn't mean he didn't try.. you have lived accross him, but does that really mean anything ? does that mean that you know what was happening behind close doors... do you know what's happening behind closed doors of your best friend tbh.. the other day there was all over the news that a kid hung himslef in his own house at school time, during break. And he was 15 ffs.. A 15 yr old. And all of his friends were shocked. They said that he'd been a model friend a great lad , a perfect pupil who hardly had any problems at all. His parents said it too. Imagine what he must have went through... Only few persons know that, and certainly not his neigbour mate

15? No mate, I am talking about early 20s onwards. He has been in court for beating people up, he has been in court for wrecking bars, he has been in court for beating his wife up, he has been in every newspaper under the sky, and all for alcoholism. And his thought it all so funny!! No disrespect to you CRO but you do not live here, you have not seen a zillionth of what he got up to.

NO, no matter what you say, we disagree - fine - but its all self induced, no sympathy from me.

but the harm had already been done up to that part ... fair enough . and you're right about that ( that i don't have a clue about living in your country ) - i have a feeling that you're ( as a nation ) a bit cold booded when it comes to other people ... too much "sun " influence ;)that's why you have such a specific sense of humor which often flerts with controversy IMO...
