So far here are the players that United have been linked with and by this I mean more than a passing "He'd look good in a Red Devils jersey" piece of speculation.
Jermaine Defoe, £12m -- Lost his touch slightly but has seemingly managed to earn his keep with Jol making it clear that he's not for sale.
Darren Bent, £10m -- Hasn't been getting the service he needs at Charlton and with things not improving under new manager Les Reed, a sneaky offer might just be made.
Fernando Torres, £22m -- Quality-wise, the most sought after young striker in the transfer market for us. His high price has been reduced quite a bit but worth the above-average price for his exceptional strength and skill.
Klaas Jan Huntelaar, £10-14m -- Another young gun who is a potential target has been thought to be the next Ruud. He's "wouldn't mind" coming to a great club like Manchester United, at least judging by his quote made earlier this year:
Huntelaar himself said "I love clubs with great history like Ajax. I also love United. It's a club that makes me dream, especially since Ruud van Nistelrooy has played there and did great things for them."
Miroslav Klose, £10-12m -- The World Cup's highest goal scorer has already expressed a desire to move away from Werder Bremen next season and although this doesn't fall under the realm of the JAN transfers, it wouldn't hurt to have a look at this option either. He's 28 now and his contract runs out at the end of the 2007/2008 season so Bremen will most likely prefer to cash in on him before that.
Nani, £6-8m -- This 20 year old isn't an out and out striker but he has played quite comfortably in that role in the past. Currently with Sporting Lisbon (with whom United have a first refusal deal in place), he's ideally used as a winger on both flanks a la Ronaldo. A very talented youngster - he's a workhorse who's always challenging for the ball and sometimes even defending just like we see Rooney do. A very very good future signing. Possible Scholes long-term replacement?
Antonio Puerta, £10m -- Sevilla's midfield starlet has attracted the attention of both Sir Alex as well as rival Arse Wenger after his contract talks have reportedly stalled. Good technical footballer with an amazing left foot. Possible Giggs replacement?
Gareth Bale, £7m -- A defender who scores goals? well... it isn't against the strongest opposition but this young Southampton lad is going great guns at the moment and could well be our Theo Walcott.
