After Fernando Torres staying put at Ath.Madrid, will Alex Ferguson pursue Jermain Defoe of Spurs as a possible transfer target?

I've always fancied Defoe, the best thing about him, is that he always tries and gets a shot on goal in from whenever he possibly can. Someone in the Rooney mould.

well....... i agree with manutdc...... we need a midfielder first......... preferably 2,,,, no one seems to be thinking abt injuries.......... we shud try and get hargreaves and carrick both....... if diarra is still available........ then maybe him instead of carrick and defoe should come if ruud leaves...... and maybe in january,,, not necessarily now,, we have rooney, smith, saha ,solskjaer and rossi already

I disagree regarding Hargreaves. All I have seen of Mascherano is that he covers the back 4. Over and back, no more. At least Hargreaves can move forward with some purpose.

hagreaves is also a dead ball specialist, something we have been missing sice beckham left. And i thinkif we get hagreaves he will prove himself to all the critics like he did at the world cup. Another player that has been linked with arsenal but not us is stephen appiah the ghanain captain. He is a dynamo in every sense of the word.

Please not defoe, he might do ok, but we'd pay too much. Be more useful to not buy a striker. With Smith, Saha, Ole, Rooney, Rossi we've enough, and Dong might be back when he gets a EU passport/ work permit clearance.
Ronaldo, Scholes, Giggs have done a job as support strikers too.
That said would take Torres/Tevez if either available

More important to spend on midfielders really

Neither Torres nor Tevez are going to be available, unfortunately. Or not cheaply, at least. Torres has said he doesn't want to leave Atletico Madrid, and Corinthians don't need to sell Tevez, not cheaply at least.

Smith needs to get fitness back before he can be counted on, Saha needs to prove he's no longer built like glass, Ole has been out for two seasons with injury and should not be trusted to haul us out of a striker crisis, and Rossi is still unproven and definitely too lightweight for the Premiership at the moment. Dong is also unproven. That leaves us with pretty much Rooney and Saha to begin with, which isn't exactly the best.

With Ruud leaving, we definitely need another striker, and Defoe can be absolutely clinical. Question is, if Liverpool were supposedly going to get him for 8m this season, why are we reportedly going to have to pay 12m for him?

tevez and corinthians are in a similar situation to ruud and united now. The fans have turned against him and he has made it clear that he would prefer a move abroad. If he takes it one step further and actually hands in a transfer request then we could get him for around 15 milllion which would be brilliant

Ferguson has just said to MUTV that there is no chance of united buying Defoe. Guess this topic is closed then.
